From Farm to Feast

It is hard to believe that it is almost Thanksgiving. When looking for Thanksgiving tablescape inspiration for 2023, I came up with two different themes. I love them both, but only one will be my family’s tablescape.

  Thanksgiving Tablescape Inspiration

My initial idea was to create a farmhouse table consisting of neutral colors (whites, beige and black) and upcycling items I had around the house and some simple DIY creations. But visits in early October to Michael’s, HomeGoods, and The Dollar Store inspired a more traditional take on my Thanksgiving tablescape.

However my table ends up looking, it becomes the Thanksgiving Tablescape Inspiration for our family celebration, but on a much larger scale. I won’t say which table won out because I love them both.

A Seasonal-Inspired Thanksgiving Table

I used the same disposable tableware for my farmhouse table and a more fall-traditional table. Sophistiplate is my go-to for many of my tablescapes. I have used their products for several years. They hold up well. And they are perfect for holidays when you don’t want to contend with the cleaning.

This year, I went with their Buffalo Check Table setting. It worked out perfectly for both ideas. I ordered enough for 24 guests, but they are available for as few as 8. The sets include the buffalo check dinner plates, salad plates, cocktail napkins, guest towels, gold appetizer/dessert bowls and paper chargers, black & gold assorted plastic cutlery, and black chevron paper straws (they are sold out of the baking cups).

The black and white floral paper table runner and dessert plates came from Etsy. The plates are sold out, but Sophistiplate includes gold ones, so that you can substitute those.

Thanksgiving Tablescape Inspirations

Fall  Harvest Traditional Tablescape

While assembling a Halloween charity project, I encountered some fall-colored and white velvet pumpkins at the Dollar Store. I grabbed the green and orange ones from several locations. The white pumpkins came from HomeGoods. They do not have the exact ones I purchased last month, but Amazon has velvet fall harvest colors here and here.  (#commissionsearned)

Thanksgiving Tablescape Inspiration

For the seasonal-inspired table, I used fall leaves garland from Michael’s. I also added some eucalyptus leaves for some color. I had these from another tablescape. Florals can upcycled for many holidays. The bushel basket came from Michael’s. I filled it with this white and orange velvet pumpkin & leaf stem and fall green velvet pumpkin & leaf bush from Joann. My mom actually had painted pinecones, which were perfect to add to the theme. You could use these decorative ones too.

You could use a natural floral arrangement in fall colors, too. Finally, I included grateful, blessed, and thankful wood words, items I bought several years ago.

Farmhouse Tablescape

For this tablescape, I used the same table settings. The difference was the use of neutral colors. For the bushel basket, I substituted some white wood florals I bought last year at Trader Joe’s, cutting them down for the height I needed. If they do not carry them, you can find some on Amazon. These look similar to the ones I had. Add in some pampas grass and dried flowers for more of that farmhouse, boho feel. (#commissionsearned)

Thanksgiving tablescape inspiration

For the florals down the center of the table, this white berry, eucalyptus, and pinecone garland will work for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The white pumpkins’ material is felt. Check out Joann, Michael’s, or HomeGoods. You can find plenty of options at any of these retailers. JoAnn has cream velvet pumpkin picks and fall white pumpkin & berry bush. Michael’s sells the ones I used, a white fabric pumpkin pick. Amazon also sells fabric white ones.

Thankful for my Friends & Family

Thanksgiving is the perfect time to count our blessings and show gratitude for all we have. This year, I am gifting each guest/family something small to show gratitude for having them in my life.

I enjoy crafting with Mason jars. My inspiration for this year’s Thanksgiving cookie Mason jar gifts came from the blogs Lil Luna and Capturing Joy. Both provide free PDF printouts. I designed hanging tags for my traditional table since I used smaller jars and halved the recipe. You can print out a PDF of mine for free.

I used her labels for the Farmhouse tablescape, purchasing the peel-and-stick labels from Amazon. (#commissionsearned)

Supplies:

Mason jars – you can use a pint, ½ pint, or quart size

thanksgiving tags

Ribbon – This Fall wired ribbon (#commissionsearned) worked great on the pint-size jars. For the Farmhouse tablescape mason jar gifts, I used buffalo check wired ribbon.

Cookie ingredients

Directions

  • Clean your jars and let them dry completely.
  • Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/2 tsp. Baking soda, 1/s tsp. Baking powder, 1/2 tsp. Salt and add to the jar.
  • Next, add 1/2 cup brown sugar, followed by 1/2 cup sugar.
  • Then add 2/3 cup chocolate chips
  • Top off with ⅔ cup M&Ms. I went with the Fall bulk candy colors.

One final recommendation. There will be leftovers. Grab these Thanksgiving-themed food containers for your guests. (#commissionsearned)

I hope these tablescapes give you inspiration for your 2023 table, and may your holiday be filled with gratitude, blessings, and thankfulness 🍂🍗🍁

The Festival of Lights

This year, Hanukkah begins early, on December 7, 2023. It feels different. Much light is needed for this festival of lights. My 2023 Hanukkah decor scheme is gold, white and light. I had already decided on this color scheme before October 7th, which reaffirms my choice.

Celebrating Hanukkah and putting up decorations is complicated. With Israel at war and antisemitism at an all-time high, it’s complicated to be decorating and preparing to celebrate when so many are hurting. I’d challenge all Jews to consider the wisdom of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks when he states:

“There always were two ways to live in a world that is often dark and full of tears. We can curse the darkness, or we can light a light, and as the Chassidim say, a little light drives out much darkness. May we all help light up the world.”

That is my motivation. To bring as much light into my home. Scroll to the bottom, where I share additional quotes about Hanukkah lights.

Hanukkah Tree

This is my fourth year putting up a Hanukkah tree. What started during the pandemic in 2020 to bring extra joy, love, and light is now a part of how I celebrate the holiday. It brings light and happiness into my home, which we can desperately use during these unsettling times.

Carrying the gold and white theme, I used my tree and pulled out the gold and white ornament collection. I also added in some gold glitter ribbon and new Hanukkah ornaments.

Hanukkah Table

My Hanukkah decor 2023 also includes my tablescape. The table incorporates my gold, white & light theme. I’ve added in lots of tea votives, which I link below (#commissions earned)

Michael Aram Botanical Leaf Menorah is a new addition to my home. I love the craftsmanship.

2023 Hanukkah Decor

Star of David Votive Holders– set of six. Over the years, I have purchased two sets of these candles. Check out Peace Love Lights shop. They have updated and contemporary Jewish decor and jewelry. A portion of all sales will be donated to the Anti-Defamation League in support of their mission to fight antisemitism and all forms of bigotry.

2023 Hanukkah Decor

Gold vintage ribbed glass tealight votive candle holders. They hold standard tealight candles.

For added dimension, I include a set of 3 candle stick holders in brass gold, adding gold tapered candles.

Gold Classic Stripe runner

Place Settings

13” Gold charger plates

Sophistiplate Gold & White Table Setting Kit – I ordered for eight guests. It Included the charger plate, dinner plate, salad plate, appetizer/dessert bowl, guest towel, cocktail napkins, and flatware in white/gold handle. They are sold out of some of the items, but I did find them on another website. A trendy item this year. I am linking the Sophistiplate dinner plate, salad plate, and appetizer bowl. You could purchase all the pieces above on this website as well. They are offering 10% off first orders.

Wrapping Of Hanukkah Gifts

The Gold & white color scheme made finding wrapping paper easy. I used Jam Matte Gold, Gold Dots gift wrap, Gold pattern on coated white paper, gold, and white twill, and JAM white matte paper.

I’ll use Ashland® Glittery gold coil pick as an embellishment and gold and white ribbon in various textures for dimension. My smaller gold and white ornaments will be used for texture. Joann and Michael’s are my go-to stores for ribbons and holiday picks.

I found Happy Hanukkah satin ribbon over the summer. It is no longer available at Joann, but I did find two spools on eBay and one on Mercari. EBay had it for over $13 with shipping, but it’s two spools. I’ve never purchased anything on Mercari, so I cannot vouch for them. I did go through their purchasing process. The ribbon was only $4, but shipping was over $4.

Zazzle has many different Happy Hanukkah ribbons. There are blue, white, gold, and some non-traditional ones. This is the closest to my exact ribbon. But I will look for an actual Hanukkah ribbon after the holidays and throughout next year. If you are lucky enough to find one, it’s a limited edition.

Gift tags

I love creative gift tags for Hanukkah. You can make your own on Canva. Sometimes, I do that, but if it is a project that will take me hours and hours and I can get them reasonably, I’m buying them. Last year, my tags were minimalistic, simple … uncomplicated.

Before making a tag this year, I found one I loved on Etsy in a different color scheme.

 2023 Hanukkah Decor

Hanukkah Star of David Gift tags– I worked with JCapCards shop owner Janeen, who made these up for me in white and gold glitter after I messaged her to change the colors. She shipped them out the same day. I highly recommend checking out her other Hanukkah and Christmas gift tags and cards.

My Favorite Hanukkah Quotes

“May the lights of Hanukkah usher in a better world for all humankind”- Unknown

“This is the season when people of all faiths and cultures are pushing back against the planetary darkness. We string bulbs, ignite bonfires, and light candles. And we sing.” – Anita Diamant

“There always were two ways to live in a world that is often dark and full of tears. We can curse the darkness, or we can light a light, and as the Chassidim say, a little light drives out much darkness. May we all help light up the world.” – Rabbi  Jonathan Sacks

“Sometimes, a flame can be utterly extinguished. Sometimes, a flame can shrink and waver, but sometimes, a flame refuses to go out. It flares up from the faintest ember to illuminate the darkness, to burn in spite of overwhelming odds.” – Karen Hesse

“The darkness of the whole world cannot swallow the glowing of a candle.” – Robert Altinger

Wishing You All A Very Happy Hanukkah 🕎🔯💙

For those that celebrate Hannukah, the first night is December 19th with Christmas less than a week later. I don’t know about you, but my email and actual mailbox, is filled with catalogs and discount coupons. Black Friday deals are out earlier than they have ever been. The shopping season has begun.

Spread Joy This Holiday Season

Our 2023 Holiday Gift Guide is finally finished. Based on recent advertising, the holiday season has started, and we are late. My email and literal mailbox are filled with catalogs and discount coupons. Retailers have redefined Black Friday with deep discounts that started on November 1st. Will the prices go down further? Check the price match policy of the retailer you are purchasing from. And check their return policy.  Many are allowing returns through January 2024, provided the tag is on and has never been used.

Last year at this time, I was done with my holiday shopping. Not so much this year, but I’ve started.  Help came from some elves I know (😉😉)

Top Gift Requests for Adult Kids

Finding the perfect gift for an adult child can be complicated. My daughters are in their late 20s and early 30s. Money and gift cards are always appreciated. But I also like to surprise them with gifts I know they have been eyeing. Hopefully, you’ve started on your gift list. These suggestions are products my daughters own or want. They’ve dropped some not-so-subtle gift suggestions, so I’ve included them. If you click a link, you will be redirected to the company’s website. If you buy something, I receive a small commission at no charge to you.

I’m so impressed with how my daughter’s generation takes care of themselves. From skincare to mental health care, they have taught me valuable tips. I wish I’d been that knowledgeable and aware when I was their age. They journal, meditate, and do yoga. Exercise and drinking water are prioritized. Cooking healthy foods and meal prepping is part of their routine. They love to pamper themselves with dry brushing, facials, massages, and soothing showers or baths (with candles).

Self-Care Gifts

Most of the suggestions above are available at Sephora, Ulta, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale’s. They include Glossier, Rhode, Foreo, Nuface, Ziip, Dyson, and Solawave. If you are unsure of what they want, like me, play it safe with a gift card.

Perfumes

Jewelry

From single earrings and Huggies to charm bracelets and charm necklaces, from rings to layered necklaces, my girls love jewelry. Their favorite places are:

Clothes/Activewear Brands

Buying clothing for my daughters is complicated. I know what brands they like. What I don’t know is the exact item they want. Do they like it fitted or oversized? What color? Style? There are way too many options. I am taking a guess on a few items that can be exchanged, but I am going with gift cards for the rest.

Shoes

Sunglasses

Headphones

Foodies

Travel

My older daughter has traveled over 15 times for weddings and bachelorette events in the past few years. Her sister has traveled to visit friends in Europe and to visit me. Whether it is a study abroad program, business, or pleasure, they love the luggage and travel bags I gifted them.

Miscellaneous

Money Saving Tips

When planning your holiday shopping lists, take advantage of savings. Many of my credit cards offer savings, but you have to add those to your card. I go through my American Express and Chase Sapphire offers every month to add any retailers I may purchase from. Before checking out for online shopping, I will see if any offers are on my cards. Additionally, check your apps, as there may be coupons you can use.

If you follow Instagram influencers, they often share a discount code (as do we at HaveUHeard). Same with CVS, Walgreens, and most retailers. Check your point balances. I let my points accrue all year. Then, I will use them to purchase gift cards. You can even order them digitally if you are down to the wire, which you won’t be if you get a head start. Most importantly, include a gift receipt.

Wrap It Up

I love wrapping presents using holiday-themed ribbons, picks, paper, and gift tags. I’m excited for this year’s wrapping sesh. Here was last year.

From Our Family To Yours, We Wish You a Joyful Holiday Season! 🎅🏻🎄🕎

A Jewish Girl’s Guide to Setting A Christmas Table

I know, it’s August. Why am I posting my Christmas table decorations? I’m late. Typically, I decorate for Christmas in July. This is my second attempt at Christmas table decorations.  I grew up in a Jewish home and loved the Christmas decorations in the stores, my friends’ houses, and even my Aunt and Uncle’s. My vibe is a Jewish Girl’s Guide to setting a Christmas table. There was such joy for a few weeks in August while working on the table decor and doing my DIY’ing.

Christmas Table Vision

My vision for this year’s table was to incorporate some whimsical DIY items. I started with a green and red striped disposable paper table runner. The runner goes well with the disposable dinnerware I picked for this year’s holiday table. Next, I placed a red berry garland down the center and added Christmas ornaments, artificial pine needles, and red berries.

Finally, a fun and straightforward diy was the decorated candy canes. I used gold and red glitter washi tape wrapped around plastic candy canes.

DIY Centerpieces

Most of my inspiration comes from Pinterest and Instagram. I also search my house to see what I have on hand that can be adapted to the table. One of those items is Mason Jars. They are the best items to keep in stock. You can use them for salad dressings, storing tomato sauce, making ice cream, etc.

They are also great for crafting. I purposely searched Mason Jar crafts on Pinterest. A few DIY pieces caught my attention, and I immediately knew I had found my centerpiece decorations.

Candy Cane Mason Jars

The candy cane mason jar idea came from the blog Mason Jar Crafts. Painting on Mason Jars can be tricky with the embossed letters. I’m improving each time I use them for crafting. When it says use washi tape, use washi tape. Fill them with pine tree branches and some artificial red glitter berry stem ornaments, champagne glitter berry stem ornaments and twigs. Those I had from last year.

I can only imagine the scent in the house if there were fresh-cut pine needles. Living in South Florida, that is not an option. You could buy some branches from a fresh tree, but even that’s complicated to get in Florida. That’s where Amazon comes in.

Christmas table decorations

Christmas Mason Jars

I get so excited when I find a fun craft idea that ties in with the vibe I am going with this year. You know, the vibe… A Jewish girl’s guide to creating a Christmas table setting. I digress. The inspiration comes from The Farm Girl Gabs.

This was simple to replicate. And I’m not mad that I got my Christmas-colored kisses and M&M’s early. The toppers are so adorable. Remember, I did not grow up with any of this Christmas decorating. It makes me feel like a kid in a candy store.  And these make great gifts for your guests.

Christmas table decorations

Mason Jars

bottle brush trees

Christmas-colored kisses

Mini candy canes

M&M’s Christmas edition

Christmas ribbon – I’m all about upcycling. I bought mine at Joanns or Michaels last year. Here are some you can grab now since not all the holiday ribbon is out yet.

Jingle bells

The Top

According to Pinterest, this looked much easier than I thought. I started with the glue gun, but patience got the best of me. I switched over to Gorilla Glue Clear to speed up the process. Check out the instructions on Farm Girl Gabs blog or below.

Instructions

  1. Unscrew the lid from the Mason Jar.
  2. Glue the metal ring to the inside lid. Glue the metal ring to the lid. Let it dry for a while. If you don’t wait long enough, the weight of the topper may break the adherence. At least, that was my experience.
  3. Put some artificial snow on a plate.
  4. Glue the top of the lid and turn it onto the snow. Put more on when you lift it. Let dry for at least 3 hours.
  5. Glue the figurines on top
  6. Glue the trees
  7. Wrap the ribbon around the outside lid with the red twine and tie a bell onto it.
  8. Fill the jar with candy
  9. Screw the lid onto the jar

Christmas Craft Paper Trees

From the blog, It All Started With Paint, I made Christmas trees using craft paper. I love her black and white trees. However, I opted to go with holiday-themed paper. The blog gives you the templates for both styles.

Christmas Table Decorations

Table Setting Pieces

If you follow my blogs, you know I am a big fan of Sophistiplate. The tableware I selected for this year is their Winter Blossom table setting.  If you are unfamiliar with this company, they sell sturdy, sophisticated table settings for many occasions and themes. You can purchase quantities of 8, 16, 32, and 48. Everything is disposable, making clean-up a breeze. The cutlery is reusable, too. Full disclosure: I receive a small commission. The reviews are my own, and I purchase the product myself.

For aesthetic purposes, I chose to add velvet napkins, tied them with red twine, and added a small gold ornament. Twine is a great item to have in your arsenal. It’s great for decorating and gift wrapping.

Did Someone Say Christmas Snacks?

I love crafting, and the Christmas table decorations were fun! Even though I am Jewish, it is not complicated for me to decorate for this holiday. Like I said, I grew up spending Christmas with friends and family. I celebrate the joy of the holiday.

These chocolate-covered s’mores from Life & Sprinkles will be perfect! The ones in this Instagram reel were for movie night but can easily be adapted for Christmas or Hanukkah. Change up the candy embellishments. Personally, you can find them cheaper on Amazon and Temu. When it comes to edibles, I want to go with a reputable company.

Now Bring On Christmas …

Many people do not feel great about Christmas decorations on the shelves in August. Walk into any store or scroll through TikTok, Instagram, or Pinterest. You’ll see, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Recently, a news segment reported that some retailers are starting to bring out their Christmas merchandise. According to a Google search, more than a quarter of Americans were already shopping in July. The thought process is that inventory may be tight this year. I don’t think anyone wants to create an artificial rush, but you could get a great deal now than waiting for the holiday shopping season.

I am one of those people who start my holiday shopping in August. It’s more of a passive approach that when I see something, I buy it. And I am trying to take advantage of any sales going on.

What are your thoughts about Christmas decorations already on the shelves? 🎄🎅🏻

Why Gift Cards Make Great Gifts

While there is still time to find gifts for those on your holiday list, between low inventory, and shipping delays, it makes shopping a little complicated. And, I don’t know about you, but not only are the wishlists filled with more elaborate requests, but I find it very difficult to pick out the exact item they want. There are many great reasons to buy gift cards.

  1. You can shop from home.
  2. They may appreciate it more because they can choose exactly what they want to get
  3. It’s the gift that keeps on giving because they can spread out their purchases.
  4. If it is a business that is financially solvent, the gift card does not typically expire. Check the fine print
  5. Less stress trying to find the right gift
  6. They can be used for gifts they feel guilty splurging on.
  7. Whether you pick out a gift card for every night of Hanukkah (that’s 8 gift cards) or follow a Christmas advent calendar (that’s 25 gift cards), you can include a variety of options in denominations that fit your budget.
  8. You can easily download a digital gift card if you forgot someone or are running out of time.

I already have all of the gift cards in my possession. Some I ordered online, and some I had to physically go to the store to purchase. I also used points on my credit cards in exchange for gift cards.

With Love & Joy

This is my favorite time of year… Thanksgiving and Hanukkah. My birthday also falls a few days before Christmas. It is a season of joy between the holidays and my birthday. As we get near, I intend to spread light, love, and joy this holiday season.  Giving to others has gotten me through some difficult days in my life.  I promise you, it is how we start to drive out darkness.

I even wear a bracelet that reads “Be A Light.” I bought it from a fundraiser by Little Words Project. I don’t recall the organization they raised money from, but it had something to do with antisemitism. I wear the bracelet daily as a reminder to myself that if I am having a particularly tough day, I should do something nice for someone else.

Light a Candle

I follow blogger Rebekah Lowin. One of the quotes she shares is from Rabbi Dr. Irving Greenbert:

“The proper response, as Hanukkah teaches, is not to curse the darkness but to light a candle.”

—Rabbi Dr. Irving Greenberg

Blocking Out The Darkness

It is so easy to find oneself in a dark place. If you suffer from anxiety or PTSD or are just having an off day, which is perfectly normal and natural, 2020 and 2021 certainly tested our resilience.

It would have been easy for me to succumb to the negativity. The only path forward I envisioned to maintain my mental health was to surround myself with others who also try their best to maintain a positive outlook. I used the tools that work for me… yoga, journaling, my vision board, cooking … anything I am passionate about.

Blocking out the noise takes work. And it’s hard work. But my experience has proven that you can find the light no matter what path you take or what journey you have found yourself on… journaling, praying, meditation, etc… There are many ways to get there.

Whether you put out positive energy daily, weekly, or during a holiday you observe, in my opinion, we must continue to find ways to spread light this holiday season.

“A Little Bit of Light Dispels A Lot of Darkness” – Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi

One of the best parts during this time of year is that many religious holiday celebrations incorporate lights. Being Jewish, I fill my home with lights. It shines from my menorah as well as my Hanukkah Tree.

My amazing, healthy, enlightened 93-year-old aunt has always spoken of having hope and believing that this darkness will pass. She has taught me the importance of forgiveness, gratitude, balance, and having a positive attitude. Her belief is that we will attract positivity if we have a positive attitude.

It is why I wake up every day expressing gratitude and maintaining positive energy.

Celebrating the Holiday Surrounded by Light

I am sharing ways I intend to surround myself with light this holiday season.

Tree Decor– I am adding more Jewish ornaments to my collection, which I will add links to. I’ve also found a beautifully elegant Star of David botanical from Peace Love Lights shop that will remain on display all year long.

Table Decor – This year, I’m excited to celebrate the holiday with family and friends, sharing my new tablescape. Of course, whatever I list can be adapted to your faith.

2021 Holiday Gift Guide – Picking out gifts for family, friends, or those in need is a way to brighten another person’s day and bring light to their life. I’m sharing my gift suggestions with you.

Light Your Flame

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks states, “For though my faith is not yours and your faith is not mine, if we each are free to light our own flame, together we can banish some of the darkness of the world.”

No matter your denomination, this holiday season I hope we can find a path together and light our own flames, whether a menorah, Christmas tree lights, a kinara. And may we all continue to find ways to be a beacon of light.

Latkes, Vodka & More

I’ve been testing out various Hanukkah recipes for this year’s holiday. Do I stick with tradition? Do I try some modern takes on recipes? After a week in the kitchen, I came up with a balance.

Main dish

Although I am a pescatarian, my kids are not. Plus I have a few extra guests that are not Jewish. For that reason, I really want to give them the full traditional Hanukkah food experience combined with some non-traditional options. I prepare my brisket in advance and then freeze it until the day before. My recipe is a traditional Brisket With Caramelized Onions.

Latke Charcuterie Board

This year, if you’ve read my other Hanukkah blogs, I am going all out. My inspiration for a latke charcuterie board came from the blog Ain’t Too Proud To Meg. It would be perfect for displaying the various latkes I made. Of course, there would be classic potato latkes. But I also love trying new variations. I know asparagus latkes sound off putting, but they were quite good. I will add in zucchini latkes for my next board.

Hanukkah recipes

It would be the perfect vehicle for displaying various latke Hanukkah recipes. My latke charcuterie board included:

For those that thrive on creativity, using a cutting board as your canvas filled with colorful and delicious traditional and not-so-traditional Hanukkah foods allows for your own artistic take.

The board that Ain’t Too Proud To Meg used was more rectangular than circular. I ordered my 19” circular board from Sur la table. In retrospect, I will use a rectangular board when I recreate the board for Hanukkah.

My thought is I need additional real estate to work with. Furthermore, when I assemble it again, I will omit the apples and sweet potato chips and add in more lox and bagel chips. The other items were visually appealing adding texture and color so if you are looking to create something more artistic, then keep those items.

Vodka Hanukkah Recipes

Again, my daughters are grown which allows for a different take on our celebration. So to add in the traditional Hanukkah colors of blue and gold, I decided to make some adult beverages.

Hanukkah Gelt Cocktail – Made with vodka, chocolate liqueur, and Goldschlager liqueur. The drink was good but next time, I am going to rim the martini glass with gold sanding sugars.

Hanukkah recipes

Hypnotiq cocktail with vodka – This was also a fun drink. Next time, I will rim the martini glass with silver sanding sugar.

Dessert Charcuterie

Keeping with the whole charcuterie board theme, I had a local business, The Hodge Podge Baking Co., make up my board. It had chocolate pops, white chocolate dipped Oreos with blue sprinkles, Rice Krispie treats dipped in blue chocolate and decorated with white fudge, and the most amazing white chocolate-coated graham crackers… complete chocolate and buttery sugar goodness. Last year, I also ordered from this business and it included chocolate bombs.

Hanukkah recipes

I also included Hanukkah Marzipan Sufganiyot from Peace, Love, Light. Personally, baking is not my forte but if you are a baker, there are plenty of options. Ain’t Too Proud to Meg also has a Hanukkah recipe for a dessert board.

Hanukkah recipes

You could also get Hanukkah chocolate-covered Oreos, and hot cocoa bombs, and add in mini marshmallows. Amazon has many options including blue and white M&M’s, candy canes (which I hung on my Hanukkah tree. Most local grocery stores are also selling Hanukkah-themed cookies. Don’t forget jelly donuts a tradition at Hanukkah.

Hanukkah greetings for love, peace, and happiness! 💙☮ 🕎

Bring on Santa & His Elves

Years ago, I became a closet Hallmark Countdown to Christmas viewer.  It was 2020, and between the pandemic and political vitriol, I desperately needed a mental escape. To a pretend place where there is Santa and elves. Snow-covered trees, wooden bridges. Main Street. Christmas decorations throughout. Of course, mistletoe too. And that entire holiday season gave me so much joy. And I’m Jewish & Love Hallmark Christmas movies.

But Wait… You’re Jewish

Yes, I am Jewish. The joy these movies bring inspired me to Hallmark out our Hanukkah decorations. I’m talking about a Hanukkah tree with blue, gold, and silver ornaments. Blue and Gold ribbons. Silver, gold & blue poinsettias. Of course, we also added in Kurt Adler Hanukkah ornaments.

Watching Hallmark Christmas movies does not make me any less Jewish. Nor does having a Hanukkah tree. I will not call it a Hanukkah bush as if that makes it any different. It’s a tree. I am simply giving Hanukkah an upgrade inspired by those that celebrate Christmas.

Why Do I Love Hallmark Channel Christmas Movies

Yes, I know the movies are formulated. So what if we know who will fall in love within the first ten minutes? I still find myself smiling. At a television set. And sometimes falling asleep with dreams of sugar plum fairies. Well, no, not dreams of sugar plum fairies. Maybe dreams of kindness toward everyone. And people helping one another…. You know, the whole it takes a village. And I even appreciate Hallmark’s inclusive content. Being Jewish, some of the first Hanukkah movies they did made me laugh. But it’s Hallmark, and it’s shmaltzy.

What Is Family-Friendly Content

As a Jewish Hallmark Channel fangirl, the online feud between Candace Cameron Bure and JoJo Siwa has my attention. In my Hallmark blog, I talk about the exodus of many of their mainstay actors to Great American Family. Their public position is that this will be a network filled with family-friendly content.

Exactly what is meant by family-friendly content? When Ms. Bure states that the Great American Family network “will keep traditional marriage at the core,” the assumption is the network will not air content addressing untraditional marriage, aka marriage that is not between a man and a woman.

As they say in Yiddish, this is causing much tsuris for Candace Cameron Bure.

Am I Surprised?

The writing was on the wall last year when GAC lured many of Hallmark’s regular cast away. I noticed and welcomed Hallmark Network’s attempt to be more inclusive. Inclusive about same-sex marriage. And interracial couples. Interfaith couples too. Hallmark was, so it appeared, acknowledging that they had an audience that included LGBTQ+, Jewish, and minorities. And that should not take away from Christmas, Hanukkah, or even Kwanza religious values.

Why Is It Offensive?

Am I surprised there are Christians who, like Candace Cameron Bure, are offended by the inclusive content? Nope, not at all. Do I care that many of the well-known Hallmark Channel stars jumped ship? Not at all. Do I find their definition of family-friendly content narrow-minded? A little bit.

I certainly believe that everyone should be able to worship how they feel. But I do not believe we should sit in judgment of others or question their religious beliefs.  It’s how I feel about being questioned about having a Hanukkah tree. It does not make me less of a Jew or spiritual person.

A Complicated Issue

This issue is complicated because we live in a society filled with antisemitism, homophobia, bigotry, and racism. We all have the right to follow our own beliefs. But when a public figure outwardly states that they “will keep traditional marriage at the core,” staying silent is complicity.

In his recent Steady newsletter, Steady, Dan Rather addresses the issue of combating hate. I am not suggesting that Candace Cameron Bure hates those in non-traditional marriages. But by publicly stating her views on not airing non-traditional marriages, she is stoking the flames of homophobia. Because the implication is she does not believe in or support non-traditional marriages.

And that’s what bothers me the most. Because we can do better. And she should do better because comments such as these do nothing to advance our society. I worry more about mentally unwell people that act on insidious statements.  Of course, I do not hold Ms. Bure responsible for those that act on their homophobic views. But I believe she would do better to be more accepting of others no matter their choices. Because, in the end, her statement could have gone unsaid.

Note: Since I wrote this blog, I have been pleased to see that actor Neal Bledsoe cut ties with Great American Family network after Candace Cameron Bure’s ‘traditional marriage’ comment.

It’s The Ha- Happiest Time of The Year

I do not expect Hallmark to move away from their bread-and-butter Christmas movies, either. I imagine their transition to airing more inclusive content did not come easily. But I am happy to see them at least attempting to recognize that an entire audience supports the Hallmark brand – LGBTQ fans and, yes, even Jewish fans.

So thank you, Hallmark, for recognizing that change is good. After all, it is the Happiest Time of Year for everyone.

Happy Holidays! 🎄🎅🏻🕎

Are You Ready for Hallmark Holiday Movies? https://haveuheard.com/life-is-complicated/hallmark-movies/ https://haveuheard.com/life-is-complicated/hallmark-movies/#respond Wed, 09 Dec 2020 22:40:12 +0000 https://haveuheard.com/?post_type=life-is-complicated&p=28281 This was my first Hallmark experience so I had no idea they had a whole arsenal of movies. There were winter-themed movies, Valentine’s Day, of course, Spring, Summer, Wedding, Fall Harvest, and then the anticipated 7 night Thanksgiving event leading up to Christmas. I could now spend the entire year sucked into the Vortex of Hallmark.

Holiday Countdown

I’ve been pretty honest about teasing family members who watch Hallmark movies. Tbh, I also laugh at them for reading romance novels and watching sappy reality television shows. That was until life became complicated. I needed a distraction between the pandemic, politics, and the constant divisive vitriol. First, it was one Hallmark movie. And yes, sure, they are scripted and unrealistic. Combined with a nice glass of red wine, I found myself smiling at the tv (that may have been the wine).

Hallmark Time

2022 was my first Hallmark Movie Countdown to Christmas experience. I had no idea they had a whole arsenal of movies. There were winter-themed movies, Valentine’s Day, Spring, Summer, Wedding, Fall Harvest, and the anticipated Countdown to Christmas.  Theoretically, I could spend an entire year sucked into the Hallmark Channel vortex. Two years later, I am excited for  Hallmark’s 2023 Countdown to Christmas.

You can use this hallmark countdown to Christmas 2023 calendar I created:

Hallmark

Diversification Time

In a moment of weakness, I shared with a few friends that I was watching and recording Hallmark movies. Some have stated they are doing the same thing. A few have laughed at me deservingly. Those of us, Jewish, minority, or LGBT, recognize that Hallmark has added more diversification in some of their movies. I’m sure that decision was somewhat complicated, considering their roots.

Although there is only a small selection of more diversified movies, I appreciate their steps. It almost appears to be somewhat of a nod to “we know there are viewers that do not celebrate Christmas or are Christian, so here is a movie for you. And yes, I know Hallmark is a Christian corporation, but I hope this diversity continues.

As a result, they have faced some backlash. In 2020, the CEO of Crown Media Family Networks stepped down. Some say it was backlash over an ad for Zola’s wedding planning and registry company. It showed two women exchanging vows and later kissing to celebrate their nuptials. Conservative group One Million Moms attacked the ad for not being “family-friendly.” After it was pulled, Hallmark faced an outcry. According to an article in Deadline.com, it is believed that people familiar with the internal discussions and many people at the network expressed their preference for restoring the ad quickly. At the same time, Abbott went against their wishes and kept it off the air.

Other Christmas Movies

Hallmark does not have the lock-in on holiday movies. There is Lifetime, GAC (Great American Family), and Netflix. You may have seen the previews for the new Lindsay Lohan Christmas movie, Falling For Christmas.

GAC is where you will find many former Hallmark actors who left Hallmark, including Danica McKeller, Candace Cameron Bure, Jen Lilley, Jessica Lowndes, and Trevor Donovan. GAC will also be airing the When Hope Calls series featuring Lori Loughlin.

I’m Still Watching

I am happy to see an improvement in the scripts, even if it is still scripted. Typically, when watching with a friend, within the first five minutes, they’ll sarcastically say, “do you think they will end up together?” We laugh because, of course, they will. Last year, my friends bought me a Hallmark-watching shirt, socks, a wine glass, and Hallmark monopoly. They also And yes, I am still watching because it has the message of treating people with kindness, compassion, and hope.

Throw In Some Drinking Games

I can’t say my friends are as enthusiastic about Hallmark Christmas movies. However, I found a way to make it fun for them by adding Hallmark Bingo and some wine. It’s a win-win. I get to watch, and we laugh and drink wine.

Snacks

Perhaps its a charcuterie board night with wine or maybe popcorn, s’mores, holiday candy with wine (It always has to be with wine). 🍷 You’ll want to serve foods that conjure up a winter night. The food will add to the ambiance.

Gifts for Your Hallmark Holiday Movie-Loving Friends

Hallmark Christmas movies are a thing. So much so that people are throwing viewing parties complete with holiday recipes, Hallmark t-shirts & sweatshirts, bingo, and more. I’d even include some of your more skeptical friends. Throw in some holiday sugar cookies, popcorn, and wine. And don’t forget the bingo prizes. I’m thinking of Hallmark-themed gifts, such as a wine glass, a coffee/hot cocoa mug, a sweatshirt, or anything and everything Hallmark Christmas.

Happy Holidays! 🎄🎅🏻

Côte d’Azur It Is

France’s Côte d’Azur is also known as the French Riviera. It’s where turquoise waters meet golden beaches, and charming coastal towns come alive with glamour and luxury. The French Riviera has a rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture, from Nice to Cannes to Aix en Province. Here you can relax on their world-renowned beaches or spend an adventurous day.

We initially planned to go to the French Riviera, Bordeaux, and Paris. All in ten days, including travel time. Once we started looking at logistics, it became apparent that we were being overambitious.

Our choice to go to Côte d’Azur would allow us to travel a long stretch of the coastline for which the south of France is famous.

Picking A Home Base

There are so many beautiful cities and coastal towns along the coast. With eight days of travel, we narrowed it down to having Nice and Marseille be our home base. From there, we selected various villages, towns, and cities as day trips. I’ve linked each city to read more about our experiences.

Discover the Magic of Nice

The most popular resort city on the French Riviera. Here you can wander through Old Town’s narrow streets, home to charming squares, restaurants, bars, small shops, and boutiques. La Promenade des Anglais is not to be missed, which follows the Bay of the Angel’s curve. It is where you will find many beach clubs and her famous pebble beach.

Uncover the Hidden Gem of Eze

This Medieval hilltop village has the most breathtaking views and gorgeous botanicals. Here you can climb the cobblestone walkway and steps up to the top, stopping at the shops and galleries. The main attraction is the Jardin Exotique d’Eze. It is well worth the 7 € entrance fee to see one of the most spectacular views of the French Riviera.

The Glamour and Glitz of Monaco & Monte Carlo

This principality of glamour and glitz is most known for the Prince’s Palace of Monaco, Grand Prix of Monaco, and Casino de Monte-Carlo. It is also the second smallest independent country in the world. Our guide explained the arduous process of becoming a resident of this principality. It is a desirable independent state to live in because it has no income tax, wealth tax, local tax, property tax, or capital gains tax on individuals. Corporate and inheritance taxes are minimal. Applicants must deposit 500,000 euros into a local bank account to reside there. There are additional requirements, but it takes ten years to file for Monaco citizenship.

You may visit the Prince’s Palace and the SAS Automotive Collection. You can walk the Formula 1 track (our transportation company is authorized as a Monaco-based company to drive within Monaco and Monte Carlo), walk the old town and take in some of the most luxurious yachts imaginable. Visitors are attracted to Le Casino Monte Carlo’s exquisite Belle Époque architecture. It is a site to behold, but if you want to gamble, the casino charges an 18 euro fee to enter the main lounges. You will need a valid passport and dress appropriately.

Fall in Love With St. Tropez

This glamorous location, lined with beautiful yachts, started as a fishing village with a vibrant cultural scene attracting artists, writers, and celebrities. Now you can wander the cobblestone streets filled with boutiques, cafes, and art galleries. They’re also known for their trendy beach clubs and restaurants, some of which are quite opulent.

Discover the Little Venice of France in Port Grimaud

Port Grimaud is a small village with picturesque canals and quaint homes. It is easy to appreciate this pedestrian-only town that has also been endorsed as a 20th Century Heritage site. It is easy to cover this town in a day but try to get there on a Thursday or Sunday to experience market day. This was a quick stop for us on our way to St. Tropez. Try to allow for time to visit the medieval historic district.

Visit Charming Antibes

This was a quick stop on our way to Cannes. This historic walled town is between Nice and Cannes and is known for its old town’s star-shaped Fort. We drove through the town, stopping to take in Marché provençal. You could visit the Picasso Museum or the famous Hotel Du Cap Eden Roc. In fact, because of its proximity to Cannes, many celebrities stay at this grand palace hotel if not for its beauty but for its privacy. We include our brief visit to charming Antibes with our Cannes trip.

Cannes… More Than Movies & Celebrities

When you think of Cannes, you probably think of the Cannes Film Festival, upscale hotels, designer stores along the palm-lined La Croisette, and beautiful beaches. Not to be missed is their historical area filled with cafes, boutiques, and art galleries.

Marseille

The second largest and oldest city in France, it became our home for two nights to visit the city and Aix-en-Province. Our hotel was along the Vieux Port (old port), lined with over 3500 boats. You can roam around the markets and shop on many streets, including Rue de la Tour, a pedestrian street with many of the trendiest shops and designer labels. There is even a Galeries Lafayette department store near the Old Port. But Marseille is so much more than shopping. I highly recommend a tour, mainly if your time is limited.

Before we left for France, a few people I know mentioned that Marseille is a dangerous city. And an employee at one of the places we were in Nice told us to be careful. Honestly, we enjoyed Marseille. We felt that saying Marseille is dangerous is the same as saying New York City is dangerous. There may be areas to avoid, and you have to use common sense roaming around this large city no more so than any other city in the world.

Experience Provençal Charm in Aix-en-Province

We were excited to visit this college town known for its fountains of all shapes and sizes, charming streets (Rue Fernand Dol), food markets, Cours Mirabeau, the main street in Aix-en-Prvince, Le Grande Marché (open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays). Of course, you must experience the Lavender Fields.

Experience Our Trip

Our mother-daughter trip to  Côte d’Azur was indeed a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From the stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters to the charming villages and vibrant cities, this region offers something for everyone. We explored the glamorous city of Nice, indulged in delicious cuisine in Cannes, stood amongst the lavender fields in Aix-en-Provence, and soaked up the sun on the picturesque beaches. The memories we made together will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

What I Would Change

Oftentimes, it is not until your return that you think of places you wished you had gone or sites you wish you had seen. It doesn’t distract from the overall trip, but we include those places and sites in the individual blogs of each city, town, and village we visited. Traveling with my adult daughters is complicated. We must look at three work schedules: personal responsibilities and vacation time.

If we had perhaps an additional five days, here is what I would do differently:

  1. Knowing it stays light out until 10 p.m., we would have, at the very least, stayed in the towns and villages that were day trips a lot longer.
  2. We would have stayed overnight in St. Tropez, Eze, and Cannes to experience all these villages and cities offer.
  3. Make some additional restaurant reservations. We had a few but got locked out of some on our list.
  4. Planned more. Our tardiness was due to work and social conflicts, but planning a big trip at least ten months in advance is much better. Better airfare rates, hotel rates, availability, and more time to research our plans for what we wanted to do in each place and where we wanted to eat.

Whether you are embarking on a similar adventure or simply dreaming of one day experiencing the beauty of France’s Côte d’Azur yourself, remember that life’s greatest treasures lie in what we see and with whom we share those moments. So go out there and make your travel dreams come true – create lasting memories that will warm your heart for years.

Bon voyage!
