A Guide to FAU FAU Stadium for Football Seats

Everyone should get to at least one Owl football game. Or, perhaps you want to get season tickets. In the past few years, Owl games have proven to be pretty exciting. One of the keys to making it great, however; is knowing where to sit. For instance, the blazing sun can make a big difference in the fun factor of a game. Here are some thoughts about the best seats for football games.

Premium seating options: All great options if you want shade, however, they are more expensive than regular seating. These are some of the best seats to watch the football game and beat the heat as well.

Suites: includes 20 tickets, 6 reserved parking passes (which is always a plus to have at FAU), ability to build your own menu with food and alcohol so you never get hungry while watching the game, two TVs, 12 stadium seats, 4 high top chairs, and 4 lounge chairs. It doesn’t get much better than that!

Field Cabana: Includes 12 tickets, 4 reserved parking passes, the ability to stock your own food and alcohol, and is only 10 feet from the end zone. Good option if you are looking for a great place to watch the game as well as a shady area by the field.

Four and six-seat loge boxes: (A new option) Private seating area, new countertops, 4-6 comfortable chairs, complimentary buffet and soft drinks, and access to Acura club which is an indoor shaded area. Loge boxes offer a combination of suite-type benefits and privileges with a private open-air experience.

Acura Club: Biggest indoor area. Must donate in order to utilize this area. One of the best options for shade and a good view of the game.

There are also the premium Delray Hyundai deck sideline seats which range from $330 – $510. These seats are shaded by the press box tower and suites and are some of the best seats to watch the football game as well if you are not looking for as steep of a price as the options listed above. Contact Ryan Alpert Sr Associate Athletics Director at 561-297-3199 or via email at ralpert@fau.edu.

Student Section is being moved right behind the visitor’s bench along midfield at the FAU stadium. This will be by the 50-yard line. Our guess is that this will create more distraction to the opposing team and perhaps cause them to be off their game.

Along the same line of thinking, the band will also be located behind the visitor’s bench.

It gets incredibly hot during afternoon games so the sun typically hits all sides of the stadium. If anyone would like to have shade but does not want to spend too much for one of these options, then they should sit just below the suite level and press boxes located on the West sideline. Good shade is provided by the suites and press boxes above. Sitting underneath the video scoreboard provides some shade as well.

You may want to peruse a few of our other blogs pertaining to football, because, frankly, seating is just one part of it. Check out Are You Ready for Some Football or Where to Pre-Game. And if you choose not to buy seats that come with parking, you will definitely want to read our Parking blog.

Now that you know when the games are, where to pregame and where to sit, don’t forget your gameday attire. We’ve got great suggestions from our interns and FAU mom bloggers (because who wants to wear what our kids wear?). Click here for student gameday outfits and here for us parents.

Letting off Steam before Finals

Mention Spring Break to most parents and immediate visions of lawless partying comes to mind.

Spring Break is March 7th through March 13th. While as parents are looking forward to seeing our students after a long stretch without them, they may have other plans. It is not uncommon for students to go away with their friends for Spring Break. For those of you who have students living on-campus, dorms do stay open during Spring Break. Parking is lifted for certain lots.

Being that this is south Florida, many students do opt to stay put. They will rather go to the local beaches or Fort Lauderdale or Miami to get a feel for a “real” spring break. During Spring Break Fort Lauderdale is usually packed and everyone is standing, but they all usually have a good time. Many students go to Lulu’s in Fort Lauderdale for the fishbowl drinks. They also will go out in Fort Lauderdale or Miami because of the free train rides from Tri-Rail.

Considering that Boca Raton is relatively close to the Port of Miami, cruises are by far the most popular option for Spring Break trips. Whether its a weekend cruise to the Bahamas or 8 days in the eastern Caribbean, there are several options for every price range. My daughter took a weeklong cruise with some sorority sisters in her sophomore year. While it worked out to be a great deal for them, I still pity the families who were on board looking for some peace and quiet. Another popular destination is the Florida Keys. Key West is just shy a four-hour drive from FAU. My daughter informed me that Key West was a “rite of passage” for 21-year-olds, right before she set off for her last spring break with her friends. Some students will sign up with a Spring Break company that the group they want to go with is using.

For those of you who have students that are looking for an alternative, FAU has trips that students can sign up for and volunteer. FAU has a program called Owl Breaks where students have the opportunities to serve their community over summer and spring break. Trip locations often include communities in Florida and other areas of need across the US and Puerto Rico. You can learn more here.

While I wanted my daughter to be able to have a good time with her friends, I also was concerned about her safety. Her father and I set some ground rules before letting her go on any of her trips.

 • Never accept a drink from anyone- again, this is a safety tip she has heard even when she goes out in our hometown.
 • Check-in with a text daily. Just a simple text letting me she was ok was all I needed.
 • Be aware of laws (open container, alcohol restrictions on beaches, etc).
 • Never, ever go off with anyone other than friends and never, ever let a friend go off with someone they do not know.
 • Wear Sunscreen (seriously this is a must)

Other Things You Can Do for Entertainment.

There is more than just football for entertainment around FAU, in fact, there is a rich and vibrant arts scene and park opportunities nearby. Now that’s entertainment!

If a movie night is what you are looking for, head to the Cinemark Palace 20. There are, as the name says, 20 movies to choose from; all in fabulous reclining chairs with reserved seating. There is also the iPic Mizner Park, which offers a more luxury movie-watching experience.

Living Room Theaters is located on Campus showcases independent films and features a European café.

For bowling, there are several bowling alleys in the area. Strikes is closest to FAU and feature a bar and grill.

Boca Raton has been a city for almost 100 years. Perhaps a visit to one of the museums might be your family’s thing. Check out the Boca Raton Museum of Art or the Boca Raton Historical Society Museum. The Palm Beach Historical Society, housed in a historic government building with political artifacts, photos, and interactive exhibits, is about 30 minutes from campus.

About 15 minutes from FAU are the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. The Morikami Museum is the center of Japanese culture and arts in South Florida. Morikami features beautiful, lush Japanese gardens filled with bonsai trees, waterfalls, and flowers. The gardens are inspired by famous gardens found in Japan. Morikami also features several exhibits, a theater, and a café.

We wouldn’t be talking about Boca Raton if we didn’t mention the beach; your student is going to school only about 5 minutes away from one. There are several beautiful beaches and parks right down the street from FAU. Spanish River Park is popular among students.

You can also try out your wakeboarding and waterskiing skills at Ski Rixen USA, located at 401 Powerline Rd. in Deerfield Beach. Check their website for daily specials including College Day (3 hours for $30 with valid student ID)

Boomers is another fun place to go and is right up the street from FAU. Boomers has a miniature golf course, batting cages, arcade game, go-karts, and more.

Gumbo Limbo Nature Preserve is a coastal barrier island that features a boardwalk, butterfly garden, and tropical fish. Gumbo Limbo is home to a sea turtle rehabilitation center, which rescues and releases sick or injured sea turtles. Gumbo Limbo has partnered with FAU to conduct research on sea turtles and other inhabitants of the Ocean. Gumbo Limbo is a great place to spend the afternoon learning more about Florida’s ocean wildlife.

That Was Then…

I would race home from school so my mom could put together some sort of costume for me then rush to meet my friends to go trick-or-treating. Somehow, by the time I had my own kids, Halloween included much more; carving pumpkins, putting up decorations, more formal costumes, and, of course, trick-or-treating throughout our neighborhood, but not without a parent escort.

This is Now…

Halloween traditions in college are, well, a far cry from the pumpkin carving, candy apple making gatherings we had in our driveway before the kids started their trick-or-treating. Many places, including the bars and the frats, will have parties – all week. Keep in mind this is Boca Raton, which is in the Ft. Lauderdale vicinity, there is a lot of Halloween-themed partying going on in general. It may not be a bad idea to remind your students of all the nice parts of Halloween and to keep their good judgment about them. A hint to be sure they have all their work done before they go out is wise too. On a Lighter Note… At FAU, students have plenty of Halloween activities to choose from. FAU program board often holds various events during Halloween week and there are several local Halloween attractions in and around Boca Raton; this year’s events are as follows:

 • October 1st- 30th: Delray Beach Halloween Festivities: Delray Beach hosts various Halloween activities throughout the month of October. Take a stroll down Atlantic Ave to view spooky storefronts or decorate your own witches hat.
 • October 29th: 9:30-10:30 Spooky yoga: Enjoy a stretch with a spooky ambiance at this special edition Halloween yoga session.
 • October 30th: 7-9 pm Heights and Frights. Experience the FAU ropes course in the dark! This event is free to all FAU students in costume. Pre-registration is required by October 30th at noon.
 • October 31st: Noon: FAU football game against UTSA
 • October 31st: The FAU dining hall transforms into a Halloween theme dining space including decorations, music, and fun dining options.
 • Send a Little Halloween Love by checking out our Halloween gift guide.
 • For local places to order, check out our Care Package guide.

Happy Halloween from HaveUHeard!

We Still Love to Visit Our Owls

Let’s face it, these are odd and crazy times! Things look very different at FAU this semester but one thing is still for sure; we all still love to visit our Owls and they love visits from us. There are plenty of different food options that offer outside and patio seating, are operating at 50% capacity indoors, and others provide pick up or delivery to adhere to and cater to potential COVID-19 related concerns. Check out some of these places to eat.

Dining

Outdoor Activities

There are also many outdoor activities to participate in to make memories in a safe and socially distanced manner.

 • Gumbo Limbo Nature Center: About 4 miles from FAU, Gumbo Limbo is a must-see. Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is a local favorite. Gumbo Limbo features a boardwalk, a butterfly garden, a small museum, and large outdoor tanks featuring Florida sea life and tropical fish. Gumbo Limbo is also a Turtle rehabilitation center; they rescue injured or sick turtles and eventually return them back to the wild. Gumbo Limbo also has a canoe, kayak, and paddleboarding tours of the Intracoastal Waterway.
 • Tortuga Trail: Located on campus, The Tortuga Trail is a natural scrubland that is home to box turtles, owls, and various species of Florida birds and plants. There are 3 trails within the preserve area, all varying lengths. The trail is free to FAU students and their guests.
 • Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens: About 15 minutes from FAU, Morikami features beautiful, lush Japanese gardens featuring bonsai trees, waterfalls, and flowers. The gardens are inspired by famous gardens found in Japan. Morikami also features several exhibits, a theater, and a café.
 • Beaches: We wouldn’t be talking about Boca Raton if we didn’t mention the beach; your student is going to school only about 5 minutes away from one. There are several beautiful beaches and parks right down the street from FAU. Palmetto Beach and Spanish River Park are popular among students.
 • For those feeling adventurous, take a trip out to the Florida Everglades. The Florida Everglades is home to several different species of wildlife such as birds, fish, and yes-even alligators. Taking an Airboat is basically a rite of passage in Florida and is a great way to tour this beautiful land.
 • Maybe a nice stroll along a beachside pier is what you’re looking for. Head on down to Deerfield Beach, about 20 minutes from FAU, and take a nice walk along the beachfront pier. Fishermen can partake in fishing off the pier; fishing rods and bait are available for rent. The pier is a beautiful spot for taking in some of South Florida’s sights and it’s located on a popular beach.

Regardless of how you choose to visit your student this school year, we hope you make the most of your time with them in their college town by seeing their favorite places (walking or driving), meeting their friends, and catching up on all the fun times they are having. Where is a Safe Spot at College?

As colleges are doing their best to come up with ideas as to how to keep our students safe and healthy as they reopen campuses, we can only hope that our students will adhere to those rules when they leave their classrooms. Let’s face it; it is not easy to enforce social distancing among a population that has a tendency to want to gather. Isn’t one of the best parts of college, the socializing?

We realize we can’t replace a good frat party or tailgate, but there are alternatives to fun near campus and since outdoor fun appears to be the safest alternative these days, we have come up with open-air ideas. Given that we are living under such unprecedented circumstances; we always recommend double-checking on hours, etc. before heading out as activities may be modified or limit the number of persons in each party.

Parks & Beaches

 • Beaches: We wouldn’t be talking about Boca Raton if we didn’t mention the beach; some of which are only 5 minutes away. Palmetto Beach and Spanish River Park are popular among students but we also really like these…
 • Deerfield Beach – about 20 minutes from FAU, and take a nice walk along the beachfront pier. Fishermen can partake in fishing off the pier; fishing rods and bait are available for rent.
 • Red Reef Park – Boardwalk, Ocean, Snorkeling
 • South Inlet Park Beach – beach, fishing, picnic areas with grills, (no balloons allowed in the park)

For something a little different, check out:

Restaurants that have outdoor space for dining.

Of course, if you notice that your student is experiencing any type of stress or anxiety from the new rules on campus, there are resources available. Learn more in our blog The Stress Happens to All.

Check out these Owl Things to Do

If you have decided you want to be an Owl, congratulations! Welcome to the University where there is football in paradise. All Owls will tell you there are some “must-dos” at FAU before graduation. Exploring all of what FAU and Boca Raton have to offer will make your time at FAU that much better. Check out our Bucket List for some popular must-dos.

The Offical Bucket

 • See a Movie at Living Room Theaters- Living Room Theaters is an upscale movie theater on campus showing current popular and indie films. They also show classic films. Enjoy a movie with lunch, dinner, dessert, and drinks; all available at student discounted rates.
 • Enjoy a Beer at the Burrow- The Burrow is FAU’s on-campus sports bar. It’s a right of passage to enjoy a beer here once an Owl turns 21.
 • Walk the Tortuga Trail- Check out Florida’s natural landscape and wildlife right in our backyard. More information on the Tortuga Trail.
 • FAU Football Game and Tailgate- While I can almost guarantee it will be hot; FAU football games are where the best memories are made. There is school spirit at every turn and always a chance to take a picture with Owlsley himself.
 • Visit the Beach – FAU is surrounded by some of South Florida’s nicest beaches
 • Attending the Homecoming Bonfire- Most Owls will tell you that the bonfire and concert are what made them feel at home at FAU.
 • Participate in Owlthon (Dance Marathon) – Have fun while raising money for an amazing cause.
 • Mizner Park- Mizner Park is home to several restaurants, boutiques, and event spaces. Students enjoy stopping by to do some shopping or grab an ice cream. Make sure to visit during the holidays or when a festival is being held. You don’t want to miss the Christmas lights.
 • See a concert or show at Mizner Amphitheatre.
 • Visit Gumbo Limbo Nature- Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is home to a Boardwalk, tropical fish, and the home of a Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center. FAU maintains a research center at Gumbo Limbo. Pay a visit to the Sea Turtles and enjoy a walk on the coastal boardwalk before a day at the beach.

Once you complete all of these, you will officially be a lifelong Owl!

Officially Unofficial – Dad is in Town to Visit!

Dad’s weekend isn’t exactly official at FAU, meaning that there isn’t one specific weekend that it is called for, but some sororities and fraternities have one. The sorority I am in does not have a specific weekend exclusive for dads, but there are several weekends throughout the year that you are meant to invite your family to. Whether you have a specific Dad’s weekend or not, there are plenty of things to do when your dad comes to town that will make your time with him special.

Going to school at the FAU allows you to have endless possibilities for activities to do with your dad. For those dads looking to relive their college experience, there are floods of parents that go out during Happy Hour. It is extremely relaxed and always a good time. There is both outside and inside seating and parents can get a glimpse into the college lives of their students. My parents love it- we get to go to the bars and have some great bar food for lunch.

For those students 21 and up, I would recommend going out in Boca or, just a short drive away, the Avenue in Delray. Some of our Boca favorites include

 • O’Brian’s Irish Pub: The Irish Pub that draws 21-year-olds near and far. Known for their Friday night block parties and fun drinks.
 • Dubliner: Irish pub featuring live music, karaoke, and trivia nights.
 • Yard House: While it is a Full restaurant, Yard house features a large bar with over 100 beers on tap.
 • Black Rose Irish Pub: Both indoor and outdoor bar space featuring several TVs and live music several nights a week.
 • Nipper’s Bar and Grill: Nipper is a Local Legend, one of the only local places that stay open past 2 am. Nipper’s is a casual bar that features pool tables, games, and live music.

If you decide to head to The Avenue in Delray, check out:

 • Salt7: Salt7 is for the partying crowd, a live nightclub featuring DJs every Friday and Saturday night. Brunch at Salt7 is also an experience; it turns into a full-blown party with music and performers.
 • Honey: Honey has a lounge area with small tables, excellent small plates, and specialty cocktails. Honey has a DJ or Live music almost every night of the week.
 • Bull Bar: Somewhat of a dive bar but always a good time. Bull Bar is a local favorite featuring a good variety of beers on tap, TVs, and live music.
 • Sandbar: All outdoor, oceanfront tiki bars. This bar serves up tropical drinks on its sandy patio. Live music and yard games set the tone at this casual, beachfront bar.
 • The Office – another popular spot located on the Avenue. DJ

A fun thing to do with your dad if you are 21 or older is to hit up some of the breweries; here are the top ones:

 • The Funky Buddha Brewery & Lounge: Smalls plates, live music, and in-house brewed beer make for a great evening at this quirky location.
 • Prosperity Brewers: One of the newer breweries calling Boca Raton home, Prosperity Brewers is located in the warehouse district. Prosperity has 8 beers on tap and features season beers throughout the year. Great Casual brewery to kick off the weekend.
 • SaltWater Brewery: Located in Delray Beach, SaltWater featured a tasting bar, live music, brewery tours, and a beer garden with rotating food trucks.
 • Park and Ocean – Located in Birch State Park, this restaurant, and garden have their own in-house brewery offering specialty beers. Great place to chill
 • LauderAle – Located just outside Port Everglades, this is one of the first nano breweries in South Florida. Serving blondes, imperial stouts, and seasonal and special releases.
 • Invasive Species – Located in Flagler Village. Rotating drafts, outside beer garden, beer to go, and food trucks on the weekends.

My parents and I love to eat at all of the amazing restaurants in town, so when my dad comes up, we always try to eat somewhere new and different. Whether it is breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner we are always guaranteed a good meal, and it’s nice to have dad pay for it! There are so many great restaurants located right on the water and the area is just beautiful.

There are also tons of different nature and outdoorsy activities to do with your dad – check out our suggestions in Nature vs Nurture. Wherever you go or whatever you do, make the most of the time you have with your dad when he comes to visit you. Having your dad come spend time with you at college will make memories that you will always remember!

The post Supervise an Easy Budget for Your College Student appeared first on HaveUHeard.com.

]]>
This is a budget lesson that will serve you in the future!

I quickly realized that I needed to place my daughter on a budget when she mentioned her third Starbucks run of the day while at orientation. The university will bombard you with information regarding meal plans, scholarships, FASFA, and financial aid; but it won’t prepare you for the personal decision that is your student’s budget. After Orientation, her father and I decided to have an honest discussion with our daughter to find the best option that would suit our family’s needs. First family rule; I will not pay for alcohol. I am not sticking my head in the sand and pretending kids won’t go out and drink, but I don’t have to pay for it either. They can use their summer earnings for that stuff. Books and school supplies were to go on my credit card, which was also there for emergencies. Food, depending on whether your student has meal plans; lives in an apartment may vary.

For our daughter, the best option was to give her $50 a month in Owl bucks. She could use the Owl bucks at any dining location on campus as well as the Book Store and Outtakes stores on campus. We also decided to give her an additional $150 a month for other expenses. If our daughter chooses to use her allowance up on pedicures and sushi, then peanut butter and jelly can help to balance her budget. The point here is that we are not looking for our daughter to suffer (I assure you she has never endured any sort of agonizing hardship), but rather to learn to budget her money. It is our goal for her to gain some independence by not having to ask us for additional funds. There was an adjustment period, but after her first semester, it was not an issue.

Mention to your student to take a look around campus for free activities. There are over 400 Student Organizations on campus. Getting involved in one or more almost guarantees things to do and ways to socialize. Often club activities are included in membership or are fairly priced. Many of these clubs even offer nights where they give members free dinners along with the night’s activities.

More Ideas

Maybe your student has a job while at school and won’t ask you for a thing. Since she paid for most of her extras, I can honestly say it has taught her to really give thought to her purchases. Consider having your students get their own credit cards. It is a great way for them to start learning how to budget themselves while building their credit for when they are out on their own. Read our credit card recommendations. I have to admit, one of the most challenging experiences I had when my youngest daughter went off to school was telling her to be more budget careful as I watched her come close to spending all of her weekly allowances. I wanted her to be able to go off and have sushi or late-night pizza with all her new friends, but I also knew she would thank me later for teaching her how to budget. After a few weeks, she got the hang of it and I can confidently say she survived off ramen and peanut butter only a handful of times.

The good news is that there are plenty of places around FAU’s campus that make sticking to a budget possible. There are also a few good tricks. For instance, if your students have a meal plan, encourage them to bring back a few snacks from the dining hall for later. Encourage your student to check out promotions and student discounts at some of their favorite restaurants. Many of the local restaurants around Boca Raton offer buy one get one promotion or a few dollars off if your student simply checks in on Facebook. Several restaurants also offer student discounts by presenting a student ID. These discounts can range from 10% off to even a free drink or appetizer. Also, have your student download some of the restaurant and dining apps to take advantage of additional savings. Read about those apps, they can be really helpful.

Something to Hoot About

Owl-always love football! I love going to FAU football games- there is nothing like game day. HaveUHeard how FAU got its colors? In the conference room of the second floor of the Weir Plaza, it was suggested by Adelaide Snyder, the first employee and Vice President for University Relations that blue and tan for the sea and sand be FAU’s colors. Roger Miller, then the top administrative officer had just retired from Army JAG as a colonel and he said he never wanted to see the color tan again. So Adelaide brought the chart of colors in again and got the men (at that time there were no other women) to approve French Blue and Silver Grey.

I’m all about the Red and Blue on game days and I am somewhat about the fashion. But I also want to be comfortable especially on those Florida humid days when you are packed in a stadium and it is more than 90° out and the humidity is stifling. Here are my suggestions for what to wear to the game for parents.

You can wear officially licensed Owl wear or just dress in their colors. Here are some great suggestions for us Moms and Dads from cotton tops and t-shirts to comfortable dresses for the moms and collared shirts, polos, or jerseys for dads or just a super comfortable, breathable tee. Throw in some accessories including a regulation stadium bag and a logo-ed skin for your cell and everyone will know you love the Owls.

As Game Day gets closer, FAU will announce what colors students are expected to wear. For example, they may announce that a game will have a “white-out” or a “blue or red-out.” This means Owl students should wear a blue, red, or white outfit! Want to know the actual primary colors- FAU gives you the graphic versions.

We think the best in authentic college clothing, accessories, and fan gear is Fanatics. They carry brands such as Jordan Gear, Vineyard Vines, Stance, Columbia, Dooney & Bourke, Tommy Bahama, Vera Bradley, Orca, Southern Tide, College Row One Shoes, Johnnie-O Clothing, and Peter Millar Clothing. Add in everything you need for tailgating including NCAA tents, tables, and chairs, waterless face tattoos, eye black, jewelry, and more.

For shorts or jeans (only if it is cool out- even ’70s will still be hot), I like American Eagle’s mom jeans or denim shorts.

If wearing a comfortable dress is the way you want to go, definitely check out some of these fun Game Day dresses from Redbubble.

If you are like me and more about ‘repping the school’s colors, just look for red, blue or silver. Throw in some accessories including a regulation stadium bag from SCORE! The Official Game Day bag (you even get a 15% discount- get code by clicking on the link), cute red and blue earrings and everyone will know you love the Owls!

We would strongly recommend leaving the high heels at home as you will be walking to the stadium and climbing stands. I love wearing Converse sneakers or Adidas Stan Smith, depending on my outfit. For cooler weather, I even have worn flat boots.
