I never thought I would be saying this, but sometimes it is a good idea to hire a cleaning service for your students’ apartment or dorm. Hear me out…I think most kids are perfectly capable of keeping a clean room but get a maid. Growing up, my daughters knew I was not their maid and they certainly learned how to clean their rooms. But, recently I had a friend whose daughter was extremely sick with the flu. The mom began a search to have the entire apartment disinfected. With flu season and virus’ going around; wouldn’t it give you peace of mind to know those nasty germs have been eradicated and may lessen the chances of your child catching what their roommate has or the roommates catching what your child has? Of course, this is my strongest point, but having seen my daughter’s apartment after a few months of living, I have others. Some students simply don’t have the time and are often searching for affordable maid cleaning help. Here are few cleaning services some of our Owls have tried.

FAU Cleaning Services

• Dorm Mom- Dorm Mom Cleaning services start at $69 per visit. They send out 1 cleaner who will clean for up to 3 hours the common areas, kitchen, and bathrooms. Dorm Mom also has laundry options; prices vary based on load size and frequency.
• Boca Cleaning Service- Boca Cleaning service was used by several of my daughter’s friends. They provide both regular house cleaning and move in/out house cleaning. 561- 305-3083
• Campus Suds- Pick up and delivery laundry service for students. Campus Suds offers plans for the entire semester or one time washes. They also offer storage facilities for students over the summer. Click here for more information or call 561-716-4026
• Classmaids – Also popular with many students, you can book everything through their website. They also offer laundry services. Most of their employees are students who are background and reference checked. They offer a move in/out cleaning service as well.
• One might also check out Thumbtack’s website or app for reviews. Locals post about their business, expertise, and services offered. There is a page specifically for house cleaning in the Boca Raton area. You will need to know the zip code of the area you are searching for.
• Finally, there are some students that like to clean (not my daughter) and will do so to make some money. Some will do laundry for a fee too. Students can look at social media for posts or post what they are looking for. It can be a time-saver, moneymaker, maid services are a good idea.

I spent the summer before they left for college teaching all three of my girls’ things they would need to know to live on their own, laundry included. My soon to be Owl was a willing participant, but some of her clothes did not make it out unscathed. It was a little bit of a battle because what should take maybe an hour or so to run two loads, dry and fold became an all-day project. By the time she was ready to head off to college, I felt she knew enough to be able to handle her own laundry. And then I just hoped she would wash her sheets and towels weekly as well as doing her regular laundry.

My new Owl would tell me that students were willing to pay others to do their laundry. Or, that if she was doing her own, if she did not get to the laundry room quick enough, some other student would remove her wet clothes and leave it on the table so they could use the washing machine.

So, let’s discuss the laundry options when living in a dorm. Typically, the laundry room is found on the first floor. At the Innovation Village, each apartment has its own washer and dryer within the unit. FAU now offers residents complimentary laundry services. They simply have to swipe their Owl card. Your student will need to provide the detergent. They make it fairly dummy-proof with buttons for the different categories (whites, colors, etc.). They also utilize a service called My Wave Vision, which will let them see which machines are available.

Sometimes, laziness kicks in and they just need someone to do their laundry for them or they have clothes that are dry clean only. Perhaps they need some alterations done. Our interns recommend these places:

Boca Mizner Cleaners and Tailors – This is a dry cleaning service located 51 NW 1st Ave, Boca Raton FL 33432

Campus Suds – Pick up and delivery service for students. Campus Suds offers plans for the entire semester or one time washes. For more information or call (561) 716-4026.

Cache Cleaners – For dry cleaning, Cache has several locations in Boca Raton, Village Tower Shoppes on SW 18th Street, 561-394-4646 and The Reserve at Boca Raton on Clint Moore Road, 561-883-9533.

Christina’s Alterations – 20921 Lyons Road. in Boca Lyons Plaza. Closed on Sundays. 561-488-5532

Faria’s Alterations Plus – Which is a clothing alteration service located at 2116 N Federal Highway, Boca Raton FL 33431

Joy Cleaners – Located on Federal Highway Open Monday through Saturday from 7 am – 6:30 p.m.

Magic Tailors and Cleaners – Located on 5th Ave, Open 8-6 Monday through Saturday.

Nordstrom Alteration – which is located in Town Center at Boca Raton. This is also close to FAU and it is in the mall which many students like.

Sew Much Fun– 7491 North Federal Highway, (561) 999-9992. This is a fabric/monogram shop but they also do alterations.

Vincenzo Custom Tailors – Located at 6063 SW 18th Street in Boca Raton, this is a reputable place for sewing and alterations.
