Make it a Friendsgiving

Although FSU is officially closed from November 25th-29th, not all students will be going home for the holiday. Flights can be incredibly expensive around this time. Some students may have to work and others may go home with a more local friend for a little turkey dinner. And, although classes are going virtual from Thanksgiving through the end of the semester, there will still be some students that want to stay in Tallahassee. Perhaps, instead, you’ve decided to switch things around a bit and this year you will go to Tally for Thanksgiving. Whichever way it works out; there is plenty to do if you are going to be at FSU for Thanksgiving this year.

Let Someone Else Do the Cooking

Many restaurants put together a great traditional meal for Thanksgiving. Some are less traditional but sound delicious. Some are only doing take out. Check out some of these:

Blu Halo

Cracker Barrel

Georgio’s

Golden Corral

Little Paris

Marie Livingston’s Steakhouse

Shula’s 347 Grill

The Edison

There is always FOOTBALL…

For the first time since 1958, the FSU and UF football game will not be played, a casualty of the shortened season. But Nole fans will still have football that weekend, just against Virginia.

Giving Back…

Perhaps you prefer to spend your Thanksgiving giving back to the community. There are many organizations, churches and synagogues, and homeless shelters that would be happy to have your help. If you are affiliated with a religious organization in Tally, you may want to start by asking if they have any plans; if not, perhaps you would like to read our blog about local Places of Worship. My family and I have delivered meals quite a few times on Thanksgiving and I assure you the feeling we walked away with was fantastic.

Friendsgiving

It seems like a trend, but one I hope sticks around. Many students, particularly those that live off-campus, have been hosting their own Friendsgiving. Some students host and organize the whole thing. Everyone brings something from turkey, stuffing to desserts or you can order the food from Publix, Whole Foods, Lucky’s Market, or The Fresh Market. My oldest has continued the tradition after college.

Along the same lines, students that cannot get home should check Facebook, because they are definitely not alone. Students are putting together groups to have a Thanksgiving meal together. What a great way to meet other Noles. Cooking a turkey meal is ambitious so don’t be surprised if they call home to have mom help them out (or they can call 1-800-Butterball). Have each person make a dish or order your turkey and sides and decorate the table (Pinterest has some great suggestions for decorating on a budget). They can grab some great disposable tableware at Party City, making clean up a breeze!

Housing is Open…

School is officially closed, but the housing communities will not be closing for Thanksgiving. If your student will be staying on campus and has a meal plan, they can contact Dining Services for more information about what areas are would be open during the holidays. Dining services will be limited.

A Few More Thanksgiving Events/In November…

Even before Thanksgiving, the spirit begins to move our Noles. They may want to check out the following events; some before and some on Thanksgiving day:

Turkey Trot Festival – Sunday, November 18, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 at Goodwood Museum and Gardens

Turkey Trot Race –  Four races: All Thanksgiving morning. This will be a virtual race from Nov. 26-29

A Few More Things to do Over Break for Those Stay in Tally:

Only 30 minutes out of town — The Allison Christmas Spectacular – There is no charge to come see the lights, and the display is a drive-by. The lights will be displayed Thanksgiving through New Year’s from 6-10 pm nightly.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Officially, unofficial.

Dad’s weekend isn’t exactly official at FSU, meaning that there isn’t one specific weekend that it is called for, but many sororities and fraternities have one. My sorority has one during the Spring semester. Some will rotate years with mother-daughter or mother-son weekend. Sororities will either host a brunch or have some activities planned that weekend. Many sororities have brunch at the house; others rent out a restaurant. Mine has brunch on Sunday, giving us time to hang out with the family beforehand. It is not uncommon for more than Dad to come for Dad’s weekend, but generally, it is about you and Dad.

For those dads looking to relive their college experience, there are floods of parents that go out during happy hour. It is extremely relaxed and less clubby. There is outside seating and parents can get a glimpse into the college lives of their students. My parents love it – as long as we stay outside as it gets pretty stuffy and crowded inside. For those students who are 21, I highly recommend just taking Dad to the college town area and bouncing between Madison Social, Township, and Coosh’s. Warning: your parents will never want to leave. Or, hit up some of the breweries closest to FSU. These include:

For those adventurous dads, head over to the FSU Rez – 3226 Flastacowo Rd. It is $3 for those aged 16 and up for entry. To rent a canoe, kayak, or stand up paddleboard, it is $10 per hour if you don’t have a valid FSU card. FSU students get in for free. My dad loved being able to escape from technology and just canoe on the lake. Although he did much of the rowing, it was a great bonding experience and he got to see that Tallahassee does have a lot to offer with these scenic places. Some fraternities arrange for golf outings or a campus sports game. Often they have BBQs as well.

There are many great things to do and see in Tally. We have a list of other great must-sees. One of our new favorites is Tomahawk Chop Axe Throwing Adventures that recently opened on W. Tennessee Street. They offer only beer & wine. It is a lot of fun! Another major advantage of having one of my parents come to see me was being able to eat out. If you’re a student looking to indulge, some great restaurants in town that you should check out are The Edison and Table 23. Check out our restaurant blog for other great suggestions. For those parents who are looking for a relaxing or more chill night and want to casual drink instead of going out, check out The Wine Loft. If Dad is a wine connoisseur, all the wine and charcuterie you could ever want is there. This is a great place to start the night off before dinner reservations.

Or perhaps, check out The Brass Tap, where you’ll find 40 beers on tap and over 300 different bottled beers as well as Karaoke. If your parents come early on Thursday, they have that every night until 1 am, so the party continues. Some of our best times have been bringing our parents to happy hour at Pots. It is just an old college dive bar, but on Friday at happy hour, the fun still can’t be beaten. Finally, if they don’t want to go too far, the Level 8 rooftop lounge is located in the Hotel Duval.

When you want to go somewhere nice for dinner.

Like any college town and/or state capitol,  there are literally hundreds of dining options from fast food to fast-casual, from family-style to fine dining. Whether you are eating dinner early or late, you will find your burgers, pizza, Mexican, Chinese, barbecue, sushi, salads, Mediterranean; a restaurant for every palate, and every price point. Depending on whether you are touring with a prospective student or visiting your student in Tally, who will undoubtedly be clamoring for a good meal, the options are plentiful. Some things to consider beforehand are price and time. It is not unusual for there to be a considerable wait, even with a reservation, on a game weekend or graduation, at some of the more popular selections.

First, let’s be clear; like getting hotels and beating the traffic, securing a reservation at a restaurant – good or bad – on a game day can be a challenge. The further from campus you go, the easier it gets. Plan ahead. Even if you want more casual dining, where a reservation is not possible, consider the wait times. Once, after a game, we literally waited two hours for our food. Had we not been so hungry and realized that most anyplace else would be no faster, we waited. Next time, Publix subs will suffice. I have not mentioned that restaurant here. That said…

Backwoods Crossing – Located on Mahan Drive, this farm-to-table restaurant serves up specialty salads,  sandwiches, seafood specialties, chicken, beef, and pork and locally caught soft shell crabs. Seasonal menu so they change it up weekly. Live music every Thursday from 7 – 9 p.m.

Bella Bella – A locally owned and operated Italian restaurant that has a family environment but also a great place for a romantic dinner. Their bubble bread is amazing.

Bird’s Aphrodisiac Oyster Shack – may lure you in for the oysters, but it is really the best burger in town. Sure it also has good oysters and a cool dive bar atmosphere, but go for the burger.

Centrale Pizza, Parm and Bar – a trendy place serving up, naturally, pizzas, pasta, salads and more with an outdoor patio

Cluster’s & Hops – Located on Monroe Street, this small retail shop & bistro may be a well-kept secret, tucked away next to a mattress store. But it is worth the stop with its European-inspired cuisine and wine, craft beer and specialty artisanal cheese boards. They do close during graduation as they are more of an intimate eating establishment. No reservations are taken.

Coosh’s Bayou Rouge Restaurant – Bring Nola to Tally. Check out the Cajun specials every day of the week (including happy hour), the po’ boy sandwiches, or perhaps you prefer Turducken; they have a variety of dressings too.

Cypress Restaurant – Is nice for date night or to take your parents. Closes at 10 pm on weekends; earlier on weeknights.

Food Glorious Food – Their multiple awards speak for themselves. Wow, brunch. Great desserts. brunch, lunch, dinner, specialty cocktails, and wines menus.

Gaines Street Pies – is convenient for game day. Check out the specialty pies.

Grub Burger – on Thomasville Road is fantastic as well. They offer more “craft” burgers with interesting ingredients.

Harry’s Seafood Bar and Grille – students love to bring parents here when they are in town and you can guess why. It is dressier and delicious. Reservations recommended.

Hobbit’s – if you are looking for wings and sports, Hobbit’s is a great option. There is an obscene amount of tv’s and there is always a fun crowd on game days.

Il Lusso – New swanky Italian restaurant brought to you by Sage Owners featuring steaks, chops, pasta, and libations

Isabella’s Pizzeria Napoletana – Located on Gaines Street, they are known for their authentic Neapolitan style pizzas. Even their mozzarella is made in-house. End your meal with traditional Italian gelato.

Izzy’s Pub & Sushi – Located on Thomasville Road. Affordable sushi, craft beers, and patio-seating

Liberty Bar 7 Restaurant – With unique crafted cocktails and a gourmet menu featuring local, fresh produce, this is one of my Tallahassee favorites.

Madison Social – Pub fare. Their BLT dip is to die for, burgers, full bar, and a brunch menu on Saturdays and Sundays.

Marie Livingston’s Steakhouse – Located at 2705 Apalachee Parkway, is a raved-about local favorite for steaks and seafood.

Masa – is a favorite for sushi or Little Masa; a spinoff located in College Town

Pancho’s Mexican Grill – reasonably priced and good food.  Recently opened and located next to Insomnia Cookies.

Relish – is a fantastic burger joint located on W. Tennessee near the intersection of N. Ocala. They are open until 1:00 am and offer a creative ”build your own burger” experience. Vegetarian and pescatarian burgers are available too, as well as lettuce wraps for our healthy eaters.

Sakura Japanese Sushi & Grill – Located in Midtown with some of the best sushi. Good service, and a variety of Japanese cuisines.

Shula’s 347 Grille – If you’re in the mood for a fancy dinner with family and friends or a romantic dinner to celebrate, this is the spot/ Nothing can top the steak and mashed potatoes. As of now, they are open Tuesday-Saturday from 5pm-9pm with a limited menu so we recommend making a reservation.

Table 23 – for nice dining or a fabulous burger. There is a Sunday brunch as well. The menu will not disappoint, whether it is food or something from the bar you are looking for. Jo-Mamas pizza is simply fab, but get the house salad with the most amazing secret dressing as well.

Ted’s Montana Grill – Located on Village Green Way, they specialize in authentic American fare including bison, steaks, burgers, chicken and more- all antibiotic-free and many locally sourced ingredients.

The Edison – Everyone seems to love The Edison for nice dining.

The Junction at Monroe – Yes, it’s on Monroe Street. This is a music venue with food and drinks. It has a cool atmosphere so you may want to check it out.

The list could not be complete without including College Town, mixed-use development is located on the edge of campus just two blocks away and super close to Doak Stadium. The location is hard to beat on a game weekend where you will find:

The Wilbury – it’s brand new, so I am going by what friends and students have told me. It has some very cool BBQ options that, I hear, are really tasty. Everyone raved about the fried green tomatoes.

Township – Urban street fare and beer. Brunch Menu on Saturday and Sundays with their signature Stein-Mosa.

Vale Food Co. – a healthy, fast, and casual restaurant with a build-your-own-bowl and a superfood station menu. They even offer meal plans for those of you who worry that your student isn’t eating well when you aren’t there.

College football … Noles, It’s Time

We can’t wait for it! Noles football! To start anticipating that our football team will end up nationally ranked and headed to a bowl game. Even after graduation, alumni go to football watch parties where they can hang with other alum. Hanging with other Noles fans is way more fun and it could lead to a job, a rekindled friendship, or just a feeling of being back at school.

We’ve got the places to head to for football game madness. In some cases, bars may have closed or are no longer affiliated with FSU. We highly encourage checking with the bar prior to your arrival. Be sure to dress in your Noles school colors – you can find some great gameday outfits.

And since going to the actual games is sort of different this year, you might just want to watch them locally in Tally. If so, we think these are some great places to watch:

Brass Tap Beer Bar – 1321 Thomasville Rd, Tallahassee, FL 32303

Proof Brewing – 1320 S Monroe St, Tallahassee, FL 32301

World of Beer – 830 E Lafayette Street, Tallahassee FL, 32301

A Guide to Seats at Doak Campbell Stadium

Everyone should get to at least one Nole football game. Or, perhaps you want to get season tickets. In past years (not including last year),  Nole games have proven to be pretty exciting and they are anticipating another thrilling one. One of the keys to making it great, however; is knowing where to sit. For instance, the blazing sun can make a big difference in the fun factor of a game. Here are some thoughts about the best seats for football games.

 Doak S. Campbell Shady Seating

Unfortunately, little of the stadium offers much shade – less than 10% actually. However; short of hoping for an evening game, you should know…

  • Rows 80 and above in Section 9 are covered
  • Rows 3 and above in Club 315 are covered
  • Sections 35 – 38

With this in mind, you may just want to choose your seats knowing this:

  • Florida State Sideline – The Florida State sideline is in front of 32, 33, and 34
  • Visitor Sideline – The visiting team sideline is in front of 9, 10, and 11

Or perhaps you prefer more comfortable seats…

Club & Premium Seating: Champions Club; Sections 214-228 and 315-327 on the south end of the stadium are part of the new Champions Club. All club seats are “stadium-style.” Seating includes padding, back support, armrests, and cup holders. Fans have a great view of the jumbotron and action in the endzone. Food and beverages are available. This is also probably the coolest seating in Doak as it is climate-controlled to help save you from the Florida heat. Additionally, the Champions Club does provide access to their open rooftop terrace. WIFI is also available.

Visitor Seating: The upper half of sections 13 and 14, Sections 117 and 118, and select rows of sections 15 and 16.

Student Seating: Available in Sections 1-7 and 40-41. Make note of this, since you will probably want to sit with your student. Sections 1, 2, 3 and 4 are in close proximity to student seating.

Kids & Family: Sections 317 and 318 (shaded and in close proximity to concessions)

Great Views: Elevated rows in Doak receive great reviews in regard to terrific game-watching (specifically in sections 8-12, 31-35). Rows 35-50 come highly recommended. For club level, the best-rated, comfortable, and terrific views are located in 216, 217, 225, 226 and the 300s sections directly above.

If you want to sit by the Marching Chiefs, they are in the South End Zone, section 120.

You may want to peruse a few of our other blogs pertaining to football, because, frankly, seating is just one part of it. Check out Are You Ready for Some Football or Where to Pre-Game. And if you choose not to buy seats that come with parking, you will definitely want to read our Parking blog. And, you may want to brush up on FSU Football traditions before you head to the game.

Finally, if you want to know what to wear to a game, take a look at GameDay Outfits for FSU Parents.

Get ready for the big game with these attire tips!

The best feeling for any college student, particularly if you’re a Seminole, is waking up knowing its game day! There is so much preparation that goes into game days: where to tailgate, who to squad up with, and what to wear. Showing up to tailgates and games is more than just rocking your school colors, it is showing your spirit and how much you love your school. It almost feels like a school-wide competition: who can get the most spirited? With this list, you’ll be sure to place in first!

haveuheard game day fsu

It is important that whenever you are shopping for game day attire, you strictly look for your school colors. You don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb wearing the one color that doesn’t match with everyone else. As Game Day gets closer, FSU will announce what colors students are expected to wear. For example, they may announce that a game will have a “white-out” or a “black-out.” This means students should wear a black or white outfit!

If you are on a budget, then definitely stick with the basics: plain colored tank tops and t-shirts that match your school colors. Denim is always the move for game days, especially ripped shorts or overalls from American Eagle. Whether you choose denim or black and white pair it with any blue/white/orange top. Equally is popular is a white jean skirt with a tight tank. If you want to get a little more decked out in spirited gear, then you can choose from face stickers, headbands, and fun socks to add a bit more fun to your outfit. Wearing colorful, tinted sunglasses have been really popular, so get a pair that sports your school colors!

Your t-shirt is one of the things people notice the most, so it needs to make a statement. Most girls like to show off fun DIY cut up t-shirts. They can turn t-shirts into crop tops, tank tops, halters, and more! The options are endless and always make an outfit. You can look up how to DIY cut up t-shirt. HypeandVice has great bodysuits and cheer-skirts.

If you want to test out your DIY skills, you can get awesome shirts from places like Target or Walmart for a great price. If you are confident in your DIY skills, try acid-washing your shirts! You can also leave it to the professionals and order your custom cut tee shirts here. Of course, the best way to cheer on your team is to be the cheerleader! Not literally, but looking like one helps. Cheerleading skirts have been super popular lately. Match the skirt with a cute cut up top and you have yourself the perfect game day outfit.

Or check out Hype & Vice for some game day tops, cheerleading skirts, and accessories all in the colors you need to show your ‘Nole spirit. We also like Gameday Couture Social House and By Gabby.

Perhaps you are more about repping the school’s colors. We absolutely love, Show Me Your Mumu’s line of cute and trendy gameday outfits. Wear your fandom proudly with a customizable Game Day Bracelet! Opt for your team’s colors and each bracelet comes with 8 chic gold letters for mixing and matching to create your favorite slogans and phrases that make it clear who you’re rooting for. Please note, this bracelet will arrive unassembled.

Feeling more like a team player than a cheerleader, then we have something for you, too! Wearing your team’s jersey is one of the best ways to show off your love for the team. Girls usually wear an oversized jersey so it even looks like a dress! You can get a jersey with your favorite number or even get a personalized jersey with any name and number you like. To top off your look, accessorize with a clear bag from Score Gameday bags. Use the code HUH15 for a 15% discount. Most stadiums implement a clear bag policy, so why not have a clear bag that still has style?

Guys have it a little easier and stick to a more simplified look. Dry fit and polo tops are the go-to for most as long as it has their school logo. You can check out a bunch of options on Fanatics. To protect from the hot sun, guys also love to sport a school baseball cap. Regardless of your style, don’t forget sunscreen and lots of water. Game days are long and often hot so be sure to stay safe and hydrated.

When it starts to get a bit cooler in the season, a lot of fans wear school-spirited sweatshirts. Tailgate leggings are even better when you’re cold and need to cover up yet still want to show your team spirit! Deck yourself out in all things that represent you and your university. Show off your colors all day, every day! Your team will thank you!

Go ‘Noles!

Seminole Chop anyone?

Way back, when your student was deciding on where to go to college, attending Seminole sports probably came into play. It’s just what we do. And it’s fun…even if you don’t know what’s really happening on the court/field. (Who me?) The important part is to know when to cheer, when to chop (Seminole chop is taught at orientation and if you missed that class, it’s pretty easy to catch on, but I will describe later) and when it’s a good time to run out and get a drink (I mean water. It gets extremely hot on some game days.) The key is learning where to sit inside the stadium based on time of game and shade.

Student Sports Tickets

Did U Know? FSU students get in FREE to all Seminole athletic events, including football? Football, basketball, and baseball are the most popular, but tickets are available to view golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis, and track & field too. Getting tickets works on a points system. Students accrue points based on their class standing (so seniors have priority over freshman). There is a way around that, though. Have your students join the Seminole Student Boosters, which will give them 500 Spear-It points and faster access to sporting events. As a matter of fact, you too can join the Boosters and reap the rewards of membership which include ticket and parking priority; oh and they only serve beer in the Boosters section of Doak Stadium (and nowhere else).

FSU competes as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level primarily competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) for all sports and has 20 participating sports teams. The Seminoles’ athletic department fields 20 teams. They have collectively won 17 team national championships, and over 100 team conference championships, as well as numerous individual national and conference titles. The Seminoles football team, who achieved three undefeated titles, has won three national titles, eighteen conference titles, and six division titles. Many people know of Jimbo Fisher, their head coach, and a fearless leader. The Seminoles play at Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium. The official seating capacity is 79,560, although the record attendance has been closer to 85.000.

Alumni

With a large and loyal alumni base and strong student support, the excitement of game days builds rapidly depending on the start time. There are RV areas with alumni starting to tailgate hours before each game, fraternity houses hosting parties and many bars running specials. The most outstanding tradition in college football then occurs when a student portraying the famous Seminole Indian leader, Osceola, charges down the field riding Renegade, an Appaloosa horse, and plants a flaming spear at midfield to begin every game. The Marching Chiefs play the “war chant,” which you will learn in no time. Probably most important, is to practice a repetitious bend at the elbow, symbolizing a tomahawk swinging down, and you will have perfected your “chop,” a pertinent part of the day’s festivities.

Non-Student Sports Tickets

Non-students may not use student tickets as entry does require showing your student ID. You can purchase tickets on the official website providing the game is not sold out. You may also want to consider joining the Boosters if you intend to go to a fair amount of games throughout the season. It can make getting tickets easier. A secondary source is through StubHub. Depending on the game, tickets can get pretty costly. Try to map out which games are of interest to you now; the earlier you purchase tickets, the easier it can be.

Beware: There are many scalpers roaming around the stadium prior to the game, but oftentimes they are asking not only for a large markup on the face value of the ticket but you never know if it is a legitimate ticket. If you choose to take that chance, it is recommended you know the full layout of the stadium beforehand.

Doak Campbell Stadium

A few more things… Doak is a tobacco-free stadium. I highly recommend either investing in a seating cushion or visiting one of the booths just inside the stadium to rent a chair back from $5 up. I told you above about Doak’s new alcohol policy, but Howser Stadium serves beer now too. There are many concessions that sell water, soda and ice tea and lemonade for all other seating.  On extremely hot days, they will sometimes allow fans to bring in one empty water bottle and use the bottle refill fountains throughout the stadium. Of course, I wish I knew this before I spent close to $50 keeping my family hydrated during a noon game. A noon game can get dangerously hot if you are not in the shade. Often, you won’t know the time of the game until a few weeks (sometimes days) before, be thinking ahead. Demand for hotels is extremely high (and can get expensive) during football weekends, especially the strong rivalry games and homecoming. Try to book as far in advance as possible. Many hotels require you to cancel 30 days out during these weekends (normally you can cancel 24 hours in advance). Finally, you may not carry anything except a tiny purse, wallet or clear bag into the stadium.

Nole Graduates – We Haven’t Forgotten You

Many of our students graduate and are now lifelong Nole fans, but can’t get back to Tally for the games. Good news: There are many bars dedicated to alumni throughout the country; and not just in Florida. There are 3 in NYC alone.

Southern Charm Close to FSU

Less than an hour north of Tally is a small town that will have you believing you’ve traveled back in time. Filled with southern charm, Thomasville, Georgia can provide the perfect weekend getaway. Actually, you can just go for an afternoon too, if you just want to escape the daily routine of college. It is especially popular when parents come to town and families are looking for something different to do. (Check out our Nature vs Nurture blog for more ideas.)

Envision Stars Hollow from the Gilmore Girls and you will get Thomasville. Here are some of our favorite places to visit while in Thomasville:

If you are going for a day trip, plan to get there early and make good use of the whole day. Consider assigning a designated driver in your group or hop on the Greyhound bus for under twenty dollars! Day-trippers, make sure you save your Thomasville trip for any day, excluding Sunday. Thomasville follows the style of a small, old town; consequently, the town shuts down around 3 PM on Sunday’s and people lay low.

For those embarking on a weekend getaway, consider ditching the franchise hotel and book your stay at one of Thomasville’s picturesque Bed & Breakfasts. We chose to kick back at the charming and historic Paxton House Inn.

On sorority Mom’s weekends, you will surely run into your sorority sisters and their moms. We loved going into all the shops and just roaming the streets. It truly felt like we traveled back in time.

Fun Electives to Take https://haveuheard.com/posts-fsu/fun-classes/ https://haveuheard.com/posts-fsu/fun-classes/#respond Tue, 18 Sep 2018 22:04:38 +0000 http://haveuheard.com/?post_type=posts-fsu&p=8404 When You Need Electives At orientation, before freshman [...]

When You Need Electives

At orientation, before freshman year had started, advisors asked that students declare a major. My daughter left there practically in tears, feeling as though the pressure was on and her course needed to be set. There was a course catalog, per se, in front of her, but she felt limited to just the pages within her major. We encouraged her to explore. Take all different sorts of electives, because you just never know what may spark an interest and possibly change an intended path for something even more grand and exciting.

Sometimes students’ schedules are just so jam-packed that an easy and fun elective is the perfect way to round out a schedule. Electives can serve many purposes: fulfill an individual’s major requirement, supplement more rigorous courses to complete a minor, fill a schedule, or simply to have fun. For those who have the time and space in their schedule for a fun and easy elective, check these out:

  • Circus – Yes, don’t just attend (see our FSU Bucket List here) the circus; learn to be part of one. Did you know FSU is one of the only universities in the nation with an operating circus?
  • Yoga – For the record, this isn’t just about poses and breathing. There are actually papers and readings. It is much more than just stretching a few times a week, but a popular and well-liked class.
  • Bowling (PEL 1111r) – Great practice for that league they may join someday. Our interns say is so cool, but we also hear that they really teach you to bowl.
  • Coffee, Tea, and International Culture – You will definitely know how to order at Starbucks after this, but you will also gain an understanding of coffee and tea in varying cultures.
  • Fantasy Girls: Women and Girls in Science Fiction and Fantasy – Great class for the feminist or anyone for that matter.
  • From Ballet to Beyonce: Gender and the Body In Dance and Pop Culture – So you say you can dance? Actually, you don’t have to, but you will learn about choreography, staging, and gender stereotypes.
  • Choral Union – Do you like to sing in the shower? Led by master’s students, members will get to participate in an actual choir. It’s just a lot of fun!
  • Sociology of Hip-Hop Culture – Apparently there are deeper messages behind hip=hop and rap and in this class, you will learn to analyze them and their effect on society.
  • First Responders Course – This is a yearlong course, then a year of volunteering and students must apply to be part of FSU’s Emergency First Aid unit. Imagine being able to save a life.
  • International Wine & Culture (HFT2062)
  • Professional Selling (MAR3400) – Wonderful post-grad information class
  • Fundamentals of Speech (SPC1017) – Professor Ziegler is beyond entertaining and very well-respected by the FSU community. You will learn a great deal while having a wonderful experience.

And Athletics…

There are also quite a few classes that are both fun to take, which will force you to exercise and are for credit. Check out classes like:

  • Racquetball
  • Aerobic Conditioning
  • Soccer
  • Ballet
  • Golf
  • Basic Weight Training
  • Indoor Tennis
  • Flag Football
  • Ultimate Frisbee
  • Volleyball
  • Soccer
  • Basketball

Electives often fill quickly so make a list of the top few electives you would like to take including the course code. This allows for quick searching on the day and time registration opens. As with any class, it is a good idea to check out the professors beforehand. Some electives that include materials will cost money to participate. There are always CLEP exams too. These aren’t necessarily easy, but they can bring students closer to graduation without taking an actual class. Basically, CLEP exams allow students to receive college credit for what you already know by earning qualifying scores on any of the many examinations. It is brilliant, really.
