Popular Ways To Spend Your Break.

You haven’t seen them since January and are looking forward to some time with them home again over Spring Break. UCF’s 2020 Spring Break is Monday, March 9th through Saturday, March 14th. I recognize the scenario. They, our students, may have other plans though. Just thought I would give you the heads up. It is not uncommon for students to go away with their friends for Spring Break. It’s what they saved all summer for, right? Remember cramming 10 college kids into the Holiday Inn in Ft. Lauderdale for Spring Break when you were their age? Perhaps that is what is frightening you.

Probably the most popular Spring Break trip these days is a cruise…with 422 of their closest friends (think group rates). My son has been on two. Based on his stories, I pity the family that was also on that cruise ship thinking they were getting a quiet vacation. Yes, generally four kids (one of which must be 21 or older) cram into the cheapest cabin possible, purchase the all you can drink package (this does not mean that the drinking age on cruises is anything less than 21) and go. If you are lucky, the worst thing they will come back with is minor sunburn.
Some kids head off to the Keys. Some go skiing out west. Wherever they and their friends may venture, there have to be some guidelines. One thing is for sure; they will have fun. We all want to know our kids are happy; it’s how we get through those moments of missing them.  Keeping them safe comes first though. And, if your student is planning a trip, plan way ahead as the prices get higher as you get closer.

Our List of Do’s & Don’t’s

Before they leave we review the following:
-Don’t go anywhere alone. Use the buddy system.
-Don’t leave a drunken friend alone, particularly if they have “passed out.”
-Wash your hands…a lot. (I am normally germ-phobic, but, these cruise ships are a breeding ground for viruses, etc.)
-Wear sunscreen (sunburn happens in a bathing suit or ski jacket).
-Be aware of laws (open container, alcohol restrictions on beaches, etc.)
-Check-in (you can agree as to the right amount of times for your family)

Some of the other popular destinations for UCF students these days are the following:

Daytona Beach – has long been a popular Spring Break destination. The whole town likes to party. They kick off the spring season with the Daytona 500, Bike Week in mid-March, and more celebrations continue well into April. It especially gets crazy near the newly renovated Main Street Pier and boardwalk. It’s not always beach weather in spring though. If you want guaranteed beach weather, head further south.

Fort Myers Beach – During the past few years, its popularity has soared as a Spring Break destination with many converging on the beach for games, contests and other events.
Clearwater – not mentioned often, but apparently, the party action and crowds are still strong.

Miami Beach – if your student is on a serious budget, skip this destination. A night out there will cost them. Yet the Art Deco flair and topless beaches seem to crowd the beachfront hotels and Lincoln Road’s outdoor cafes during Spring Break.

Key West- Parties are a 24/7 event here at any time of year, and everything seems to kick up a notch when college kids swarm down Duval Street, Key West’s beaches and bars. Mallory Square pops, as always, with its sunset show, and there are plenty of restaurants.

Cocoa Beach – is the surfing capital of Florida, but you don’t have to bring a surfboard to have fun. The beaches get pretty lively during Spring Break. Fort Lauderdale – This is where the 10 college kids in one room at the Holiday Inn happened. That isn’t the way Spring Break in Ft. Lauderdale looks anymore, but it can still be popular; the Elbo Room still jamming. While “The Strip” can hold its own, the current crowds are also dispersed onto neighboring beaches in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Pompano Beach, Hollywood, and Deerfield Beach.

Panama City/Destin – When local laws banned alcohol on the beaches and created other restrictions; its allure changed. Add to that, they are recovering from a major hurricane.
If your student is planning to stay in Orlando, this may be their chance to enjoy Disney and Universal Studios.

Perhaps your student is looking for an alternative to the wild Spring Break trip. UCF offers its Alternative Break Program which can be international or within the country. These trips provide a great opportunity to give back to communities in need while having some fun.

Spring Break is sort of a rite of passage. Let’s face it, in just a very short few years they will (hopefully) be out in the working world and vacations will take on a whole new look for them.

Get ready for the big game with these attire tips!

The best feeling for any college student, particularly if you’re a Knight, is waking up knowing it’s game day! There is so much preparation that goes into game days: where to tailgate, who to squad up with, and what to wear. Showing up to tailgates and games is more than just rocking your school colors, it is showing your spirit and how much you love your school. It almost feels like a school-wide competition: who can get the most spirited? With this list, you’ll be sure to place in first!

It is important that whenever you are shopping for game day attire, you strictly look for your school colors. You don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb wearing the one color that doesn’t match with everyone else. As Game Day gets closer, UCF will announce what colors students are expected to wear. For example, they may announce that a game will have a “white-out” or a “black-out.” This means students should wear a black or white outfit! If you are on a budget, then definitely stick with the basics: plain colored tank tops and t-shirts that match your school colors. Denim is always the move for game days, especially ripped shorts or overalls from American Eagle. If you want to get a little more decked out in spirited gear, then you can choose from face stickers, headbands, and fun socks to add a bit more fun to your outfit. Wearing colorful, tinted sunglasses have been really popular, so get a pair that sports your school colors!

Your t-shirt is one of the things people notice the most, so it needs to make a statement. Most girls like to show off fun DIY cut up t-shirts. They can turn t-shirts into crop tops, tank tops, halters, and more! The options are endless and always make an outfit. If you want to test out your DIY skills, you can get awesome shirts from places like Target or Walmart for a great price. If you are confident in your DIY skills, try acid-washing your shirts! You can also leave it to the professionals and order your custom cut or dyed shirts here.  Some other favorites for tailgate outfits include Tailgate Tailor and Custom University.

Another great place to order game day apparel is Hype & Vice. They have some great crop tops, bodysuits, tube tops, gameday cheerleading skirts, and queen of gameday sunnies. We also like Gameday Couture Social House and By Gabby.

Of course, the best way to cheer on your team is to be the cheerleader! Not literally, but looking like one helps. Cheerleading skirts have been super popular lately. Match the skirt with a cute cut up top and you have yourself the perfect game day outfit. If you’re feeling more like a team player than a cheerleader, then we have something for you, too! Wearing your team’s jersey is one of the best ways to show off your love for the team. Girls usually wear an oversized jersey so it even looks like a dress! You can get a jersey with your favorite number or even get a personalized jersey with any name and number you like. To top off your look, accessorize with a clear bag from Score Gameday bags. Use the code HUH15 for a 15% discount. Most stadiums implement a clear bag policy, so why not have a clear bag that still has style?

Perhaps you are more about repping the school’s colors. We love Show Me Your Mumu’s line of cute and trendy gameday outfits. Wear your fandom proudly with a customizable Game Day Bracelet! Opt for your team’s colors and each bracelet comes with 8 chic gold letters for mixing and matching to create your favorite slogans and phrases that make it clear who you’re rooting for. Please note, this bracelet will arrive unassembled.

Guys have it a little easier and stick to a more simplified look. Dry fit and polo tops are the go-to for most as long as it has their school logo. You can check out a bunch of options on Fanatics. To protect from the hot sun, guys also love to sport a school baseball cap. Regardless of your style, don’t forget sunscreen and lots of water. Game days are long and often hot so be sure to stay safe and hydrated. When it starts to get a bit cooler in the season, a lot of fans wear school-spirited sweatshirtsTailgate leggings are even better when you’re cold and need to cover up yet still want to show your team spirit!

There is always so much anticipation when it comes to football season, so enjoy it while it lasts! Deck yourself out in all things that represent you and your university. Show off your colors all day, every day! Your team will thank you!

Go Knights!

Mid-Day Munchies – what’s for lunch?

The best part of lunch is the break it gives you in the middle of the day! But it’s even better when you’re enjoying the meal as well. Like any college town or city, there are literally hundreds of dining options in Orlando from fast food to fast-casual, from family-style to fine dining. The more time my daughter spends there, the more places to eat we have discovered. Food is a big draw for us, can you tell?

Your lunch choices will often depend upon whether you are touring with a prospective student or making a visit to your established Knight, who will undoubtedly be clamoring for a good meal. Some things to consider beforehand are price and time. It is not unusual for there to be a considerable wait at some of the more popular lunch spots – even with a reservation – during a game weekend, official tour dates, or graduation. Many of the restaurants on our breakfast, brunch and dinner blogs also serve lunch, so be sure to check them out as you refine your lunch plans.

Near Campus

Bar Louie – has you covered if you are craving a fantastic burger. Check out the “Fried Louie Burger” and don’t skimp on the “loaded tots.” Happy hour is pretty great too, but I only go for the upscale bar food.

Bento– ranges from sushi and poke bowls to noodles and salads. Depending on what you want it’s a great option.

Blaze is a very popular lunch/dinner spot! I recommend the create your own pizza because you get unlimited toppings.

BurgerFi – right next door to our other options listed so if you’re feeling a burger and fries this is the place to be.

California Pizza Kitchen – chain eatery with inventive pizza, salads, and pasta.

Chipotle – If I didn’t mention this, my son would never forgive me. However, it is real food with wholesome ingredients without added colors, flavors or other additives. Have a burrito bowl, burrito, taco or salad; it is all good.

Fresh Kitchen– the line at lunch may be a bit long, but it goes quickly and it is always worth the wait. Gluten-free, vegetarian; everyone is happy here.

Hummus House – Located on University Blvd. near campus, this is a favorite for Mediterranean foods. You can create your own bowl. Gluten friendly and vegan options.

Lazy Moon – The pizza is not just delicious, but the slices are gigantic. The vegan pizza is fantastic too.

Little Greek – counter service, great gyros, pitas, souvlaki and so on.

Mamak Asian Street Food – a local family-owned restaurant specializing in Southeast Asian street food is opening a new location in the University Shoppes in September. They will start with delivery/take out and then dine-in pending the current situation.

Marlow’s Tavern – Pub fare with sports on every TV

Metro Diner – relaxed American fare; something for everyone.

Panera – counter-serve chain for soup, salads, baked goods, sandwiches and more. They put the calories on the menu.

Slapfish – socially responsible, chef-driven seafood recipes at affordable fast-casual prices.

Tandoori Bowl – modern and authentic Indian

Toojay’s Deli – Bakery – Restaurant  – in Waterford is also a good staple for a good deli sandwich.

Uncle Maddio’s Pizza – join the assembly line to make your own pizza or salad!

Waterford Lakes, not far from campus and filled with tons of shopping, also has many restaurants. So many that it sort of needs its own heading. Here are some good choices in Waterford Lakes:

Zaza New Cuban Diner– serving traditional Cuban food including fresh-baked dulces, platos, espresso, cafe con leche, and traditional Cuban sandwiches.

Zoes Kitchen – Mediterranean fare, no microwaves or fryers, because it is all freshly made. They even have gluten-free options.

On-Campus

If you are also scoping out places for your students to eat even when you’re not ‘lunching’ with them – because we all know they’re not cooking three meals a day – you should have them check out the Pocket Points or UConnection apps. Each time students turn off their phones in class they accrue points for food discounts and deals at many restaurants around town. How smart is that?!

Eating on campus has its benefits, particularly if they live off-campus and have a full day of classes on campus, as my daughter does. Her Tuesdays and Thursdays are jam-packed and although she talks about bringing a cooler with lunch to campus, if she remembers, it generally gets left in the car. Her biggest gripe is that although there are many affordable choices; there still aren’t many healthy choices conveniently located on campus. Here’s what is on campus:

Burger U by the Addition Financial Arena

Chili’s Grill & Bar  in the Student Union

Einstein’s Bros. Bagels in the Business 1 Building and in the Education building

Jimmy Johns by Addition Financial Arena

Panda Express  in the Student Union

Pollo Tropical by the RWC

QDOBA is a really popular Chipotle-style restaurant in the Student Union

Steak ‘n Shake in the Student Union

UCF Gringos Locos finally opened on campus and our Knights are excited

Which Wich in the Student Union

If you have a little more time to relax and maybe even take a little walk up and down the quaint streets of Winter Park, there are quite a few delicious places to lunch.  Of course, a trip to Trader Joe’s to fill your student’s refrigerator before you leave may become necessary as it is right in the heart of Winter Park too. Some of our favorite Winter Park restaurants are:

4 Rivers Smokehouse – Counter-serve barbeque at its best. Try the brisket.

Cocina 214 – Mexican restaurant, but less casual.

Prato – Italian, pizza, vegetarian friendly – all delicious.

Swine & Sons – Specializing in made-from-scratch ingredients and a special weekend breakfast menu.

The Briar Patch – There may be long lines; its popularity makes them worth the wait. Go for lunch, but try the cake too!

The Porch –You will find Southern fare including fried chicken, shrimp & grits, chicken & waffles, burgers.

Can’t get out? Check into Seamless. More and more local restaurants are using Seamless; online food ordering and delivery. Easy and FREE to use.

Make Sure It Gets There

There are some basics to send a package. There are many reasons that a student receives a package. Whether it is just their usual Amazon delivery or a care package for midterms or because your student is under the weather, there are a few things that will make package delivery simpler. For students in dorms, the dorm mail office should be included on the address to receive a package. The dorms all have a mail center and packages go directly to their mail center. Someone at the office signs for UPS and postal services; then students are notified when they have a package. Students can also send out mail from the mail centers but will need postage. Students can even receive food/flowers and will be contacted via the office, but packages must be picked up and will not be delivered to students’ rooms or suites.

We actually recommend using UPS (or FedEx) in comparison to USPS as it is just timelier, especially for in-state shipping. Typically, if you are sending packages from one Florida location to another, it arrives in one day at no additional fee; barring any weather issues. The SPOT, located on campus, provides shipping of personal and campus departmental packages via UPS or FedEx. Packages must be in The SPOT before 3:00 p.m. for same-day shipping. CVS is now a UPS Access Point Location.

There is an Amazon store located on campus near Towers so it’s also an option to send Amazon packages to this location. Items can also be returned to the Amazon store, located at 4225 E Plaza Dr. Suite E. UCF offers Free Same-Day Pickup to Prime members. Sometimes picking up from Amazon is easier than having to navigate the package delivery to dorms or even apartments.

On-campus students should use the following address for mail and packages:

Name of Mail Center (ie: West Plaza Mail Center)

PO-box #

Student’s UCF email address (ie:SarahJones@knights.ucf.edu)

Mail center address  (ie: 4266 W. Plaza Drive)

Orlando, FL 32816

A dorm hall receptionist may accept delivery on the student’s behalf and will email residents when deliveries arrive. For food orders (i.e. pizza) students should provide the name of their residence hall. Students must come downstairs to pay for and pick up their order from the delivery person.

Need more information and exact addresses of each mailing center at UCF click here.

For Apartments: All the apartment complexes have their own front office where packages are delivered. You are usually sent an email when a package has arrived for you and you have to go to the front office and show them a picture ID to get the package. Occasionally packages like flowers and Edible Arrangements go straight to the door. For food prep packages, like Hello Fresh or any of those companies, they still go to the office. Very rarely are Amazon packages delivered straight to their doors; they go to the office.

You may want to take a look at some of our Care Package blog for ideas on what to send and when.

Note: Should you choose to send a gift card, beware: Chick-Fil-A – absolutely does NOT accept any gift cards and Starbucks does not take Starbucks rewards from the app but will use it as payments.

Our favorite meal of the day! Wakey-wakey!

Like any college town or city where many residents carry a yearly fun pass,  there are literally hundreds of dining options from fast food to fast-casual, from family-style to fine dining. The more time my daughter spends up there, the more places to eat we have discovered. You will find your burgers, pizza, Mexican, Chinese, barbecue, sushi, salads, Mediterranean; a restaurant for every palate, and every price point. So wakey-wakey get ready for breakfast!

Depending on whether you are touring with a prospective student or visiting your student in Orlando, who will undoubtedly be clamoring for a good meal, the options are plentiful. Some things to consider beforehand are price and time. It is not unusual for there to be a considerable wait, even with a reservation, on a game weekend or graduation, at some of the more popular selections. Please note some are in Orlando and others in Oviedo, which is right there too. I even listed a few in Winter Park, because the quaint town is just worth the 20-25 minute drive.

Ready, Set, Wakey!

Another Broken Egg Cafe – In Winter Park and has a wide range of yummy options.

Black Bean Deli – If nothing else, go for the Cuban coffee. They have light bites and quick snacks all day. All authentic.

Blu on the Avenue – in is Winter Park and they have a great brunch selection

Briar Patch – This belongs under breakfast and lunch and is worth the drive to Winter Park. Oh, and it also belongs under. Everything is delicious.

Brooklyn Water Bagel – the closest you will come to a New York bagel with all the toppings, but it is only a 10-minute drive from campus.

First Watch – This is one of my favorites. If you want delicious and a little more health-conscious breakfast (brunch or lunch too), this is the place. There is also a one on Alafaya too, where Newks used to be.

IHop – Because sometimes you just want a fat stack of pancakes and it is just one mile from campus.

Keke’s – is clearly the best place for breakfast (and lunch), based on the fact that literally everyone I asked said go to Keke’s. It is a diner-style chain with booth seating that serves your typical American breakfasts. The lines are worth the wait for the pancakes and/or French toast.

3 Natives – From Acai bowls to amazing salads to delicious wraps; he/she is all set here.

Maple Street Biscuit Company– A casual cafe serving melt in your mouth biscuits and sandwiches topped or smothered in gravy or syrup and southern sides. Breakfast and lunch (dinner on Saturdays). This being the south, you will want to naturally try their biscuits. Located in Oviedo on the Park. Closed on Sundays

Metro Diner – Located on University Boulevard near UCF, Metro Diner serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner but we are recommending breakfast/lunch. Featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, hosted by Guy Fieri.

Nick’s Family Diner – is another brunch place on Orange Blossom Trail 30 minutes from campus, and they’re vegetarian-friendly!

Omelet Bar – Don’t let the name fool you; there is far more here than eggs. They serve incredible breakfasts, munch (as they say) and lunch.

Peach Valley Cafe– Located in downtown Orlando. Open for breakfast and lunch. They tend to get long lines on the weekends but serve free coffee and water for those waiting. Traditional breakfast comfort food with a southern flair. Don’t let the peach in their name confuse you and try their apple fritters.

Press’d Juice Bar and Kitchen – located in Winter Garden, good acai bowls and smoothie place

Tropical Smoothie Café – has an endless amount of smoothie options, breakfast wraps, and lunch bowls.

TooJay’s – in Waterford! They have a great breakfast, brunch selection until 11 from Monday  through Friday and on Saturday and Sunday up until 2 p.m

Townhouse – For an old-school breakfast (including American and Greek classics like gyros and spinach pies), this is the place. The wait can be long, but it is worth it if you want something a little more eclectic and value great service. (Please note: There is a new location diagonal to the old building.)

Yard House  – according to our interns, Yard House is a “yummy” brunch spot

If you are scoping out places for your students to eat, since we all know they are not cooking three meals a day, they should check out these two apps: Pocket Points and UConnection. Each time students turn off their phones in class they accrue points for food discounts and deals at many restaurants around town. How smart is that?

And, should you sleep in late, wakey works for brunch too, check out our Brunch recommendations.

Best lunch places we know!

Lunch is the fun break in the middle of the day! Like any college town and/or city where many residents carry a yearly fun pass,  there are literally hundreds of dining options from fast food to fast-casual, from family-style to fine dining. The more time my daughter spends up there, the more places to eat we have discovered. You will find your burgers, pizza, Mexican, Chinese, barbecue, sushi, salads, Mediterranean; a restaurant for every palate and every price point. Of course, if you are in a hurry, Steak and Shake is now open in the Student Union!

I even listed one or two in Winter Park, because the quaint town is just worth the drive. And because brunch and lunch can be so closely related, you may want to take a look at our blog for Breakfast and Brunch.

4Rivers- Popular BBQ right across main campus on University

Artisan’s Table – is a new lunch, brunch, dinner, and bar-restaurant that just opened up in Downtown Orlando on Church Street. They have specials every day including their $8 Burger Tuesdays and they also have a coffee bar too!

Bar Louie – has you covered if you are craving a fantastic burger. Check out the “Fried Louie Burger” and don’t skimp on the “loaded tots.” Happy hour is pretty great too, but I only go for the upscale bar food.

Bento Asian Kitchen – I would love to give you firsthand information on the Pan-Asian cuisine and sushi chain, but the two times I have gone the line was out the door and when I am hungry, I don’t want to wait. But if it is that crowded, it must be good, right?

Blaze Pizza – Make your own pizza and get exactly what you want on a crispy, thin crust.

Bolay – just opened 3 new locations in Orlando;  in Lake Nona, Winter Park and the UCF area. It’s a 100% gluten-free bowl restaurant with so many healthy, delicious options!

California Pizza Kitchen – another chain in the Waterford Plaza. Inventive pizzas, pasta, and salads.

Castaways Sports Bar & Grill – Located in Waterford Shops. Good atmosphere with bar food – chicken wings, dogs, burgers & sandwiches, entrees, salads and more.

Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen – Family-friendly chain serving American comfort food with a Texas twist, plus cocktails – so dinner too.

Chipotle – on University is always a good go-to for a filling lunch.

Jimmy Hula’s – is a good and inexpensive Caribbean place on University

Krungthep Tea Time – perfect for afternoon snacks, sandwiches, and tea.

Kyoto – Asian hibachi is on University drive right off-campus with a great lunch special.

Lazy Moon – The pizza is not just delicious, but the slices are gigantic. The vegan pizza is fantastic too. I’m listing it under the lunch category, but it is generally open very late too. Oh, and you might want to try their craft-brewed beers to go with the slice.

Le Crave Express– new crepe place in Waterford. They have both sweet and savory crepes.  Our interns claim the crepes are to die for!

Little Greek Fresh Grill – delicious gyro and chicken pitas on N. Alafaya.

Mark’s Caribbean Cuisine –  recently opened on University. They are a Jamaican style cuisine restaurants and have very healthy delicious options.

McAlister’s Deli – More than just a deli! Has soups, sandwiches, and salads.

Mellow Mushroom – Stone-baked pizzas (including gluten-free options) and delicious calzones.

Miller’s Ale House – Their most popular menu items are flavored wings, but there is so much more you can get.

PDQ – recently had their grand opening in Waterford. PDQ, in case you didn’t know,  officially stands for People Dedicated to Quality. It is fast-casual and serving crispy chicken tenders, hand-cut fries, salads, and chicken sandwiches.

Pei Wei – is a chain, but one we really like. Counter-service, health-conscious and inexpensive Pan-Asian (Chinese) food – noodle, rice dishes and more.

PokeWorks – in Oviedo just opened and is highly recommended. They have poke bowls and burritos chipotle style.

Prato – A really cute Italian restaurant in Winter Park. Try the pizza!

The truth is one might think Orlando is more about Disney and amusement parks, but there are plenty of great places to eat that aren’t terribly far from campus. There is plenty to choose from whether you are looking for a quick breakfast before you rush off to tailgate or a long, delicious dinner so you can spend a little quality time with your hard-working student. I hope this helps you find your favorites.

If you are scoping out places for your students to eat, since we all know they are not cooking three meals a day, they should check out these two apps: Pocket Points and UConnection. Each time students turn off their phones in class they accrue points for food discounts and deals at many restaurants around town. How smart is that!

The secret to getting a good dinner.

Like any college town and/or city where many residents carry a yearly fun pass,  there are literally hundreds of dining options from fast food to fast-casual, from family-style to fine dining. The more time my daughter spends up there, the more places to eat we have discovered. You will find your burgers, pizza, Mexican, Chinese, barbecue, sushi, salads, Mediterranean; a restaurant for every palate and every price point for a great dinner.

I even listed one or two in Winter Park, because the quaint town is just worth the drive.

Reality

First, let’s be clear; like getting hotels and beating the traffic, securing a dinner reservation at a restaurant – good or bad – on game days, graduation or parents’ weekends can be a challenge. The further from campus you go, the easier it gets. Plan ahead. Even if you want more casual dining, where a reservation is not possible, consider the wait times.  This might actually be the time to venture to another town, like Winter Park, a quaint little town about 20-25 minutes from campus. (Note: Rollins College is in Winter Park so the wait times may be similar depending on the date.)

Azteca D’Oro – Should be a staple for UCF families if you like Mexican

Bar Louie – is a favorite amongst parents and students. Check out the “Fried Louie Burger” and don’t skimp on the “loaded tots.” Happy hour is pretty great too, but I only go for the upscale bar food. You might want to mention the Tuesday night burger special to your kids. It can’t be beaten.

Bonefish Grill – always feels like a solid standby if its seafood or steak you are looking for.

Bosphorous Turkish Cuisine  – three locations in Lake Nona, Orlando and Winter Park area. They have an authentic Turkish menu and a lunch menu too.

Bubba Gump – in City Walk in Orlando

Cafe TuTu Tango – Artists paint as you eat at this funky tapas spot with live entertainment plus a patio & bar. Bar specials Monday through Friday afternoons.

Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen – Family-friendly chain serving American comfort food with a Texas twist, plus cocktails.

Cocina 214 – in Winter Park, Mexican restaurant, but less casual.

Cooper’s Hawk – They are popping up all over the country and lucky us; there is one right near campus. Known for creating their menu based on dishes designed to pair with their own wines (made by their own private winery), Cooper’s Hawk is gaining popularity quickly.

Domu Chibi Ramen – Located at the Audubon Park Garden District within East End Market, this restaurant specializes in serving ramen and Asian small plates plus cocktails, sakes, wine, and beer.

Earl’s – Located at The Mall at Millenia, Earl’s serves lunch, dinner, and drinks. The menu is inspired by international cuisines and uses locally sourced ingredients.

Fuji Yama Sushi – From what the kids tell me, this is the place to go if it is sushi you need. You can even order online and avoid the crowds.

Habanero’s Mexican Grill – on Collegiate Way (saw this on the 21 and fun blog but it would also be good on a dinner blog!), also a short drive from UCF, is a great place for two for $10 Margaritas. The complimentary chips and salsa are unbeatable and their food options are authentic and delicious! The perfect place to casually get some drinks or enjoy Mexican food.

Hillstone – Overlooking Lake Killarney, this is an upscale chain eatery featuring steak, seafood & pasta alongside specialty cocktails. They have a dress code. Large parties of 6 or more may have difficulty being accommodated.

Hotto Potto – Near Winter Park. Chinese and dim sum served tableside, but its the huge soup bowls you get to make yourself that everyone is talking about.

Island Wing Company – in the Plaza by University is the new hot spot for a great bite and happy hour. Everything they serve is baked and not fried for a healthier option. They have an insane amount of beers and $5 margaritas from 4-7pm and 10pm-12am. The location is perfect for anyone looking not to travel too far from UCF.

Luma on Park – An upscale casual American restaurant with a locally inspired menu including diver scallops, red snapper, chicken, steak, and more.

Mamak Asian Street Food – a local family-owned restaurant specializing in Southeast Asian street food is opening a new location in the University Shoppes in September. They will start with delivery/take out and then dine-in pending the current situation.

Marlow’s Tavern – upscale and cozy atmosphere with a hint of southern cuisine in Winter Park. Some of our favorites are the shaved Brussel sprouts and grilled turkey meatloaf, but we have heard great things about the white cheddar grit cake and seared tomato bacon jam.

Peter’s Kitchen – This China Bistro located on Colonial Drive specializes in authentic Hong-Kong style cuisine, dim sum, Chinese BBQ, and seafood.

Pho 88 – Delicious Vietnamese food from noodle bowls (try the beef noodle bowl) to Bahn Mi bread (just try it). It is a great place for large parties.

Rocco’s Tacos – is a hit particularly for birthdays and other celebrations.

Shakai Sushi Lounge – downtown and trendy. Closes at 1:30, after lunch and re-opens at 5 pm. Sushi and cocktails.

Slate – classic modern American restaurant offering wood-grilled cuisine. (We hear the Sunday brunch is great as well.)

Summer Palace Sushi – $17 all-you-can-eat sushi and our interns highly recommend it.

Sushi Kichi – Japanese teriyaki & BBQ dishes, plus sushi & lunch specials. Closes at 2 pm (after lunch) and re-opens at 6 pm.

Teak Neighborhood Grill – is pretty popular for burgers and American fare. There is one in  Maitland and Orlando.

The Milk District – in Downtown Orlando, in a cool, hipster neighborhood, offers a Food Truck Block Party worth checking out if you happen to be available and hungry on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 10 pm.

Tin and Taco – Waterford is a popular taco joint that has multiple Orlando locations but most recently opened a location in Waterford Lakes. They offer gourmet tacos, burritos, nachos, and even loaded mex fries.

Tijuana Flats – inexpensive, hormone-free chicken and steak, vegetarian options, no microwaves or freezers; so basically healthy Tex-Mex.

Uncle Julios – upscale Mexican on I-drive! Great table side guacamole!

Viet-Nomz – counter-serve specializing in simple Vietnamese eats such as pho & banh mi sandwiches, that our interns say it could easily be overlooked, but shouldn’t.

Zaza New Cuban Diner – serving traditional Cuban food including fresh-baked dulces, platos, espresso, cafe con leche, and traditional Cuban sandwiches.

In Waterford, there are also the basics: Duffy’s, Longhorn SteakhouseMiller’s Ale HouseSmokey Bones, and TGI Fridays.

Take Your Pets (Dog Or Cat) to College!

Every time I head up to UCF to see my daughter, she asks that I bring our dog. Let’s face it; the pup is everyone’s favorite family member. How do you manage pets at school? Personally, I would rather travel with a dog than have our daughter adopt one of her own that may eventually become mine too, so I often oblige. (You may want to see our blog on Hotels so you know which ones are pet-friendly.) The good news is that is becoming rather common for people to travel with their pets. Be sure, when making reservations, you tell them you are traveling with a pet. Some have fees. You can book directly through the different hotel brands listed below or book through a website like Expedia or Hotels.com or Reservations.com.

Pet-Friendly

For those who are traveling with pets, the hotels that are pet-friendly include:

Another big question is where can you go to eat. Below are…

Dog-Friendly restaurants near UCF:

Perhaps while in the area you just want to let Fido get out and run a bit. Here are a few dog parks in the area:

Dog Parks:

  • Avalon Dog Park
  • Dr. Phillips Dog Park
  • Hound Ground Dog Park in Winter Springs. This park is only around 20 minutes away. However, they are closed on Wednesdays from 7- 4.
  • Jay Blanchard Park on N. Dean Road is a less than a 15-minute drive from campus. It has big fields for your pups to run around.
  • Lake Eola Park – specifically on Sundays at the Farmer’s Market
  • Anew park is coming soon called Boozehounds Dog Bar. Yes, it will have a bar for humans.

Of course, if you are traveling with a service animal, which is not considered a “pet,” you are allowed to take your service dog virtually anywhere you are allowed to go. There should be no extra fees or deposits for this. However, emotional support animals may not be allowed to accompany their owners in public places, i.e. restaurants, stores, hotels, so you may want to check before you head out.

Basically, you are all set should you want to visit with your family pet. However, for some students, this isn’t enough. The truth is, I am not a big fan of students adopting pets. I understand that the unconditional love of a sweet puppy or kitten can be wonderful around stressful times like midterms or finals. UCF often brings therapy dogs to campus during these times for just this reason. I am, however, keenly aware of the work that goes into training a pet and the expenses that come along with their lovability.  Nevertheless, students occasionally develop amnesia for these sorts of realities and get drawn in by floppy ears and wagging tails. Beware of text messages touting puppy and kitten faces. I recommend counteracting those with pictures of goldfish (the only pets allowed to be kept in on-campus housing are fish in a ten-gallon or smaller tank. Read the rules here and take note that there is a $25 fine for unapproved pets.) Perhaps if you stay strong; your student will too.

However, if your student decides to adopt a pet while at college, they should first check the rules for where they will live. When searching for an apartment, it is easy enough to find out which are pet-friendly. Some apartment complexes have separate leases for pets. Remind your student to inspect everything upon moving in and take pictures of any damage so that their new four-legged friends cannot be blamed for it and consequently, not fined for it. And be honest; you don’t want them being evicted for hiding a pet. It happens.

Then again, it doesn’t always matter what we advise our children.  My son and his roommates adopted a puppy last year; that, for the record, as darling as she is, is going home with one of his roommates for all holidays, summers and after graduation. Eventually, they concluded on their own that having a dog was a lot of work, but if they exercised the pup, it would wear him out and they all got some sleep. So, maybe a kitten would have been a better choice, but, truth be told; girls do not run up to pet a kitten on a leash.

Pets Get Sick Too

Of course, if they do decide to have a pet, it is important to know that there are quite a few animal hospitals nearby. We highly recommend having their pet chipped in case they get lost. If a lost pet is brought to an animal hospital they can be scanned and find the owner easily.

Peace. Love. Rescue.

Perhaps, spending a day with a puppy will be enough though. Check out Pet Rescue by Judy. This organization has a program called Dog 4 a Day that allows dogs to get out of the rescue and have a fun day and get a little puppy love. There are also a number of animal adoption centers in the area: Rescue Me Orlando, Orange County Animal Services, Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, and The Animal League.

When You Have to go Away

Hopefully, when you have to be away, you can get a friend to watch your pet, but for those times that you can’t be sure to find a reliable place to board Rover or Daisy. There are a few near UCF – Happy Paws Pet Resort, University of Dogland, and Alafaya Trail Pet Oasis. Be sure to book early for popular times like Thanksgiving or winter break.

Whether you need a pet sitter while you are away or at classes or you want to become a pet sitter, check out Rover.

Finally, if you do end up with grand-puppies, you may want to add some Knight gear to the holiday shopping list. There are all kinds of fun leashes, collars, toys, and jerseys for our newest, furry fans. If you’re lucky, you too may get some zany videos/pics like the ones I send them of our dog.

College football…

We can’t wait for it! To start anticipating that our football team will end up nationally ranked and headed to a bowl game. Even after graduation, alumni go to football watch parties where they can hang with other alum. Hanging with other Knight fans is way more fun and it could lead to a job, a rekindled friendship, or just a feeling of being back at school. We’ve got the places to head to for football game madness.

A Tour Can Help You Make Your College Decision

It is the season for a campus tour. Many of you have already visited a multitude of schools, but now that the verdicts are in; decisions have to be made. Therefore, this tour should look different as it should point out the pertinent things that will help your students make their final decision as to which school to attend. Of course, my daughter loves being a Knight, but your students may have specific things that will help them weigh out the pros and cons of each college.

Go with a list of questions, but not the kind of questions that you can just google an answer to. Don’t be shy about asking your tour guide, financial advisor, a specific department, or even students hanging out near the fountain or in Knightros. They can be your greatest resources.

For instance; how important is Greek life to your student? I always recommend students try to get a tour of a sorority or fraternity house if they envision rushing when they get to college. In order to do so, they will have to find someone who knows someone that can get you in. Perhaps you have a friend whose daughter or son is a member of a sorority or fraternity. Reach out to them before going. There are not Greek life tours, but you can certainly take a quick drive through Greek Park. However, on a side note, do not let the condition of some of the frat houses scare you should you get into one. Some are off-campus. The boys tend to be much happier than their living conditions may reflect.

If your student has a health condition that makes having specific health center capabilities nearby of great importance; go check it out. Call in advance to tour the facility. PS. There is a pharmacy there as well. One of the great things about UCF is definitely the dorms. They are newer, nice, and many allow students to have their own room and/or live in apartment-style. Sign up to tour the dorms.

Go on a 90-minute campus tour led by a UCF ambassador.

Through the Knight for A Day campus tour, you can learn about the application process, academic programs, and financial aid at UCF. This tour is about 6 hours. The UCF RWC – the big gym – is super impressive. The state of the art facility, including the smaller gym near the Arena, is worth checking out, even if you aren’t a fitness enthusiast. If you have a major in mind, do your research; set an appointment to speak with an advisor in that department. What programs do they offer? If you’re religious, be sure to check out the student organizations around campus. There is a Hillel and Catholic Center right across campus, among others. Around 10 minutes from campus is Waterford Lakes. This plaza has pretty much any type of store you can think of and dozens of restaurants. Having this all so close is truly convenient.

You may want to visit the registrar’s office to be sure that your credits would transfer from any AP, AICE, or dual enrollment classes too. The UCF Athletics department has grown so much in the past few years. Our football team recently won the Peach Bowl l and made it all the way to the Fiesta Bowl. In spring the basketball team also just placed third in the AAC conference! Sports can be a big part of college and UCF has all of this! Take a peek at UCF’s beautiful sports facilities. Check out Athletics Village here.

If you were accepted to the Burnett Honors College, definitely be sure to make this one of your stops at UCF. The program is slightly more rigorous so be sure it will be a good fit. The students in this program offer sessions to share their experiences and answer questions. For more information. There really is no better way to get a sense of how you truly feel about a college until you step foot on campus. Just don’t step on the seal in the middle of the Student Union, because according to the UCF students; this will give you bad luck! You can also find a wide range of campus tours on the UCF Youtube channel.
