Get ready for the big game with these attire tips!

The best feeling for any college student, particularly if you’re a Cane, is waking up knowing its game day! There is so much preparation that goes into game days: where to tailgate, who to squad up with, and what to wear. Showing up to tailgates and games is more than just rocking your school colors, it is showing your spirit and how much you love your school. It almost feels like a school-wide competition: who can get the most spirited? With this list, you’ll be sure to place in first!

haveuheard game day um

It is important that whenever you are shopping for game day attire, you strictly look for your school colors. You don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb wearing the one color that doesn’t match with everyone else. As Game Day gets closer, UM will announce what colors students are expected to wear. For example, they may announce that a game will have a “green-out” or an “orange-out.” This means students should wear a green or orange outfit! If you are on a budget, then definitely stick with the basics: plain colored tank tops and t-shirts that match your school colors. Denim is always the move for game days, especially ripped shorts or overalls from American Eagle. If you want to get a little more decked out in spirited gear, then you can choose from face stickers, headbands, and fun socks to add a bit more fun to your outfit. Wearing colorful, tinted sunglasses have been really popular, so get a pair that sports your school colors!

Your t-shirt is one of the things people notice the most, so it needs to make a statement. Most girls like to show off fun DIY cut up t-shirts. They can turn t-shirts into crop tops, tank tops, halters, and more! The options are endless and always make an outfit. If you want to test out your DIY skills, you can get awesome shirts from places like Target or Walmart for a great price. If you are confident in your DIY skills, try acid-washing your shirts! You can also leave it to the professionals and order your custom cut or dyed shirts here.

Of course, the best way to cheer on your team is to be the cheerleader! Not literally, but looking like one helps. Cheerleading skirts have been super popular lately. Match the skirt with a cute cut up top and you have yourself the perfect game day outfit.  Some other favorites for tailgate outfits include Tailgate Tailor and Custom University.

Or check out Hype & Vice for some game day tops, cheerleading skirts, and accessories all in the colors you need to show your Cane spirit.

If you’re feeling more like a team player than a cheerleader, then we have something for you, too! Wearing your team’s jersey is one of the best ways to show off your love for the team. Girls usually wear an oversized jersey so it even looks like a dress! You can get a jersey with your favorite number or even get a personalized jersey with any name and number you like.

To top off your look, accessorize with a clear bag from Score Gameday bags. Use the code HUH15 for a 15% discount. Most stadiums implement a clear bag policy, so why not have a clear bag that still has style? HaveUHeard that American Eagle now has a collegiate collection so you can grab their plush tees, hoodies, and more for both men and women?

Guys have it a little easier and stick to a more simplified look. Dry fit t-shirts or tanks are the go-to for most as long as it has their school logo. They also wear athletic shorts. You can check out a bunch of options on Fanatics. To protect from the hot sun, guys also love to sport a school baseball cap. Regardless of your style, don’t forget sunscreen and lots of water. Game days are long and often hot so be sure to stay safe and hydrated. When it starts to get a bit cooler in the season, a lot of fans wear school-spirited sweatshirts. Tailgate leggings are even better when you’re cold and need to cover up yet still want to show your team spirit!

Perhaps you are more about repping the school’s colors. We love Show Me Your Mumu’s line of cute and trendy gameday outfits. Wear your fandom proudly with a customizable Game Day Bracelet! Opt for your team’s colors and each bracelet comes with 8 chic gold letters for mixing and matching to create your favorite slogans and phrases that make it clear who you’re rooting for. Please note, this bracelet will arrive unassembled

Locally, check out official merchandise from the bookstore on campus and online. The same goes for All Canes, which is just off of campus across from the baseball stadium on Ponce. Or head to DymeLife which sells the turnover chain t-shirts and other UM merchandise.

Another favorite for gameday attire: By Gabby and Gameday Couture Social House.

There is always so much anticipation when it comes to football season, so enjoy it while it lasts! Deck yourself out in all things that represent you and your university. Show off your colors all day, every day! Your team will thank you!

Go Canes!

Freshmen – follow this bucket list for maximum fun!

As an incoming freshman to the University of Miami, it is important to be aware of some of the bucket list items that should be experienced throughout your time at college. These items are what make a Miami student’s time at UM unique and allow students to truly enjoy themselves at college. The University of Miami campus along with the surrounding area has a lot to offer, and it is important that students take advantage of these opportunities.

Check out our bucket list:

  • Participate in Homecoming festivities – head to the lake on Friday night to watch the boat burning and Hurricane Howl fireworks
  • Relax by the pool on campus- lay in the sun on a nice reclining chair and relax with friends or do some work or studying
  • UM football game/tailgate- make sure to be in the student section for the smoke, it’s always a fun time cheering on the Canes with other students
  • UM basketball game – stand in the student section and even participate in some of the halftime/timeout activities
  • Go to a nearby beach (Key Biscayne/South Beach)
  • Go to Wynwood Art District – the Wynwood Walls are a great attraction featuring many modern and unique wall paintings that people can observe for free. Definitely Instagram worthy.
  • Go to the Rat – celebrate your 21st birthday with a pitcher or just catch up with friends to watch a Canes game
  • Get a photo with Sebastian – whether it’s at a basketball game, baseball game, etc., Sebastian is always eager to meet the fans and take pictures
  • Get a photo in front of the famous U statue – a typical tradition once being admitted to the school, a picture in front of the U is the perfect way to declare yourself at a Cane.
  • Go to the Keys- When a long weekend rolls around before you graduate, you owe yourself a visit to the Florida Keys whether a quick trip to Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, or all the way to Key West. Students will often try to get down to Key West for Fantasy Fest during Halloween (best if you are 21 and over)

Once you have experienced all of these bucket list items, you will truly know what it is like to be a Miami Hurricane.

A Guide to Hard Rock Stadium

Everyone should attend at least one UM football game! There are only 5 colleges in the US that play their home games in an NFL stadium, and Miami is one of them. HaveUHeard what that means? It means comfort and all the bells and whistles that NFL stadiums offer. Everyone gets their own seat without having to squeeze into an imaginary space. That alone is awesome since no one wants to be a leg on a leg with someone when it’s 90 degrees and 80% humidity. Cup holders are on almost every seat, and yes, they serve alcohol.

One of the keys to making your visit to Hard Rock even better is to know where to sit. For instance, the blazing sun can make a big difference in the fun factor of a game. Here are some thoughts about the best seats for football games.

Hard Rock Seating

At the stadium, it is important to know where it is best to sit.  Since it is hot in Miami year-round, fans might want to know where the best seats are that are in the shade.  Here are some tips for Hard Rock Stadium.

Hard Rock Stadium Shady Seating

Over half of all the seats at Hard Rock Stadium offer some type of shade or cover.  When trying to find good seats in the shade, refer to these sections:

Shady Covered Seat Sections

  • Rows 10 and above in Section 150
  • Rows 10 and above in Section 139
  • Rows 15 and above in Section 101
  • Rows 1 and above in Section 213
  • Rows 1 and above in Section 252
  • Rows 1 and above in Section 256
  • Rows 1 and above in Section 313
  • Rows 1 and above in Section 355
  • Rows 1 and above in Section 302

In addition to these rows, to find other seats in the shade or to find out if your seat is covered, you can review the Shaded and Covered Seat Finder.

Home/Away Sideline

  • Home Sideline – The Dolphins and UM sideline is in front of 145, 147 and 72/GC Club
  • Visitor Sideline – The visiting team sideline is in front of 117, 118 and 119

If you are interested in more comfortable seating while at the game:

North Sideline Club: Between the 30-yard lines and behind the visiting team bench, the North Sideline Club (also known as the Hyundai Club) treats ticket holders to comfortable padded seats, and excellent views near midfield.

Club Level: The Club Level at Hard Rock Stadium field offers double cushioned seating along the sidelines and into the corners.

Field Club Boxes: Field Club Boxes provide fans with the closest seating of any option at Hard Rock Stadium.

Golden Cane Club: Known as the 72 Club during Dolphins games, and the Golden Cane Club during Hurricanes games, these seats offer one of the most unique, but also most expensive experiences at Hard Rock Stadium.

Club Level Endzone: The 200 level seats behind the endzones provide fans with double cushioned seating.

Club LIV: Fans in the Club LIV seats will have exclusive access to the trendy Club LIV lounge, a multi-level area with a nightclub atmosphere. Must be 21 years of age to access.

Visitor Seating

Visiting team fans have seats in sections 122, 153, and 154. They can also sit in all sections of the 300-level.

Student Seating

Students have all of the sections 114-116 reserved for them on game days. The majority of sections 105-111 are reserved for students on game days.

Recommended Seats for Kids and Family

Sections 331 and 332 – Alcohol prohibited seating; More affordable ticket prices

Sections 310, 311, 325 and 326 – Easy access with just 2 rows of seating. Tickets generally more affordable in the upper corners

Great Views

Sections 118 and 72/GC Club – Impressive 50-yard line views from the lower seating tier

Access to premium club amenities. Close to the team benches on the sidelines

Impressing a Guest

Sections 216, 217, 218 and 219 – Amazing views from near midfield and at ideal seating height. Exclusive club level amenities including upscale dining and access to lounges. Comfortable padded seats.

Seating is only one part of the game-day experience! You may want to check out some of our other blogs pertaining to football because, frankly, seating is just one part of Game Day. Check out Are You Ready for Some Football or Where to Pre-Game, and of course Game Day Outfits before you head to the game.

You’ve waited 21 years for this!

The city of Miami, specifically South Beach, is known for its nightlife, making it the furthest thing from a typical college town. The closest thing that we have to a bar scene is visiting Coconut Grove. When you turn 21 at UM, it opens up a whole new world of nightlife and opportunities that are not available to underage students. The 21st birthday in Miami is a celebration that everyone can be excited about.

The first priority when your birthday falls during the school year is to go to The Rat. The Rathskeller is a University of Miami tradition! To order a drink or get a cup for a friend’s pitcher, you must show your now-21 license or ID. I still have my first wristband from The Rat pinned onto my bulletin board. It’s an important time for your friends to show you off, buy you a Smirnoff Ice, and share your first pitcher of Blue Moon.

People from all over the world come to Miami for its unique nightlife and clubbing scene. South Beach is home to some of the most famous clubs in the world and as students, we should take advantage of this opportunity. If you want to go all out for your birthday, getting a hotel for the night is an awesome option. Many hotels on South Beach are also home to favorite clubs and can be nice at the end of a long night of dancing with all of your friends. The W is home to Wall, LIV is in the Fontainebleau, and some of our other favorites are Rockwell, Wall, and Story.

If you’re looking for a unique 21st  birthday experience, there are rental options all over the city. Websites like Splacer or Airbnb allow you to have a party outside of your apartment, dorm, or house. Many hotels also offer cabana rentals at the luxurious pools. Some favorites are the Mandarin Oriental on Brickell Key, the Biltmore right in Coral Gables, and Mondrian South Beach.

Outside of all of the flashy Miami clubbing, 21-year-olds can finally take advantage of all of the places with bottomless mimosas or great Happy Hours. My favorites are American Social in Brickell, Tarpon Bend on Miracle Mile, and R House in Wynwood. Other popular bars among students are in Wynwood such as Wood Tavern or El Patio. You’ll see people you know in Brickell as well at Blackbird Ordinary or RedBar.

If you want a delicious cake to share with your friends, we really like Milk Bar and Dirty Cookie for cakes, because why not?

Finally, hit up some of the breweries closest to UM. These include:

You can even grab your friends and hop on Cycle Party’s Wynwood Brewery Tour to try several of the places above that are in Wynwood.

At the end of the day, 21 is another year to learn and grow! It’s important to stay safe and stick with your friends when you go out together!

The Word Is Your Classroom! Study anywhere!

Deciding whether or not to study abroad, there are even more details to consider. There are specific recommendations that UM makes to the parents and guardians, as a parent you need to do what works for you and your student. Make a checklist of all the details before you push ‘go’.

Here is what I would recommend:

The most important detail, make sure your student’s passport as well as yours has a minimum of six months before expiration. You will not be allowed to leave if your passport expires in three months. If you need to expedite getting a passport or visa, try Fastport Passport. They are registered with the U.S. Department of State.

Register and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). It is free to U.S. citizens and will give them important safety information from our Embassy and help them to contact you in the event of an emergency.

If they are traveling to a country that is more metropolitan with access to shops and stores have them purchase their toiletries over there. The exchange rate for the Euro varies so I had her pitch in with her roommates for items such as toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and cleaning supplies if they are living in an apartment.

Consider purchasing an unlocked phone that works on international networks. By purchasing in advance, your students can add their contacts and download their apps ahead of time.

Speaking of phones, it is one of the more commonly stolen items in many cities so make sure they are diligent with their phones. That means not putting them in their back pockets or on tables where anyone can walk by and grab them.

Some banks recommend having your student become an authorized user on your credit card because it may eliminate any foreign transaction fees. Have them write down the international phone number for the credit card and put it in a safe place (with a copy of their passport). If their credit card is stolen, at least they can report it immediately.

While they can pay extra for additional luggage, my daughter limited herself to one large duffle bag and a carry-on bag for the weekends they go traveling to another country. There are plenty of inexpensive retail stores where she was traveling to and she can mix and match, wash her clothes and learn to live with less. If you look at pictures of students backpacking through Europe, they do just fine reusing clothes. For ease of packing, my daughter used packing cubes which were great for organizing her clothes. We went with the ultralight packing cubes from eBags.

Consider purchasing student travel insurance for emergencies, which we pray they don’t need. HaveUHeard recommends Allianz Travel Insurance.

If they will be traveling around and staying at hotels, HaveUHeard that students can find access to special rates through StudentUniverse?  Click here for more information. Or, they can consider staying at a hostel. Hostels are not all so shabby anymore. Check out HostelWorld to see how nice (and inexpensive) some of them are.

Students love to travel to different destinations while abroad. GetYourGuide gives them guides to unique and unmissable things to do in their destination.

You may want to consider having your student get Global Entry which runs approximately $100 for five years but makes getting through security so much easier. Or, have them download the Mobile Passport app which is free and helps to speed you through U.S. Customs. (officially authorized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection). They will still need their passport but it saves them time.

MAJOR Detail – Here is the opposite of what UM recommends:

Do not go overseas with your students to help them settle in. A students’ experience will be vastly different when they are with her friends than with family. (Hotels vs. hostels) It is very important for parents and other family members to be well versed in their students’ itineraries prior to departure and notified if any changes are made.

Try not to call them every day to check-in and do not worry if your student has not spoken to you in a few days. Maybe suggest a text once a day- Just a “hi and I’m fine.” Your student may be in a time zone that is six hours later so of course, it is challenging to find a time that you are both available. The students say they text when they are on wifi. (many use What’s App but you can call through Facebook messenger or Facetime when in a wifi area and the reception is just as good). With everything going on in the world today, do not feel that you are being overly involved in asking for a short text. And, if they are going to be traveling to another country, they must let you know in advance their travel plans.

If your student would like to study abroad in a program outside of the UM offerings be sure to thoroughly research those programs. There are hundreds of programs, so make sure to look only at those that offer credit through an accredited university. This often comes up when they want to go with a friend who goes to a different college. Just make certain they get approval beforehand to be sure the credits will transfer. Study Abroad can be very pricey. In addition to the cost of the program which includes room and board, a prepaid metro card (may not last their entire abroad program), health insurance and some excursions, it does not include airfare, meals, additional travel (many use this opportunity to visit other countries). And, of course, any purchases they make for themselves.

You May or May Not See Them…

You haven’t seen them since January and are looking forward to some time with them home again over Spring Break. I recognize the scenario. They, our students, may have other plans though. Just thought I would give you the heads up. It is not uncommon for students to go away with their friends for Spring Break. It’s what they saved all summer for, right? Remember cramming 10 college kids into the Holiday Inn in Ft. Lauderdale for Spring Break when you were their age? Perhaps that is what frightens you.

Spring Break Destinations

Probably the most popular Spring Break trip these days is a cruise…with 422 of their closest friends (think group rates). Oftentimes large groups from sororities, fraternities or clubs will plan these trips together. Yes, generally four kids (one of which must be 21 or older) cram into the cheapest cabin possible, drinking age on cruises is 21. If you are lucky, the worst thing they will come back with is minor sunburn.

Some kids head off to the Keys. Some go skiing out west. While still others participate in Alternative Spring Breaks.  My daughter opted for this experience in her sophomore year, which was equally fulfilling and a whole lot of fun too!

The Mission of a UM Alternative Break seeks to provide diverse quality alternative breaks that focus on issue-specific education, service, reflection, and reorientation in order to engage participants in their local, national and global communities. Their vision is a community at the University of Miami of active citizens: people who value the community as a priority when making life choices. For a nominal fee, each trip takes students to locations chosen throughout the continental United States for service opportunities in chosen communities. Sign up for Spring Break trips typically occurs in November starting at Thanksgiving break.

Wherever they and their friends may venture, there have to be some guidelines. One thing is for sure; they will have fun. We all want to know our kids are happy; it’s how we get through those moments of missing them.  Keeping them safe comes first though.

Before they leave, we review the following:

  • Don’t go anywhere alone. Let people know where you are at all times.
  • Don’t leave a drunken friend alone, particularly if they have “passed out.”
  • You go to a party and leave the party with the same people. No one gets left behind.
  • Wash your hands…a lot. (I am normally germ-phobic, but, these cruise ships are a breeding ground for viruses, etc.)
  • Wear sunscreen (sunburn happens in a bathing suit or ski jacket).
  • Be aware of laws (open container, alcohol restrictions on beaches, etc.)
  • Check-in (you can agree as to the right amount of times for your family)
  • Be aware of your valuables at all times, especially passports, credit cards, school ID, etc.

Popular spring break destinations for University of Miami students:

Disney World & Universal Studios, Orlando

Busch Gardens & Adventure Island, Tampa

Daytona Beach – Has long been a popular Spring Break destination. They kick off the spring season with the Daytona 500, Bike Week in mid-March, and more celebrations continue well into April. It especially gets crazy near the newly renovated Main Street Pier and boardwalk. It’s not always beach weather in spring though. If you want guaranteed beach weather, stay closer to campus.

Fort Myers Beach – During the past few years, its popularity has soared as a Spring Break destination with many converging on the beach for games, contests and other events.
Clearwater – not mentioned often, but apparently, the party action and crowds are still strong.

Key West- Everything seems to kick up a notch when college kids swarm down Duval Street, Key West’s beaches and bars. Mallory Square pops, as always, with its sunset show, and there are plenty of restaurants.

Cocoa Beach – is the surfing capital of Florida, but you don’t have to bring a surfboard to have fun. The beaches get pretty lively during Spring Break.

Fort Lauderdale – This is where the 10 college kids in one room at the Holiday Inn happened. That isn’t the way Spring Break in Ft. Lauderdale looks anymore, but it can still be popular; the Elbo Room still jamming. While “The Strip” can hold its own, the current crowds are also dispersed onto neighboring beaches in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Pompano Beach, Hollywood, and Deerfield Beach.

Panama City/Destin – Beautiful white sandy beaches, huge beach houses for rent. Far drive from Campus and this destination needs more time to recover from the hurricane.

Spring Break is sort of a rite of passage. Let’s face it, in just a very short few years they will (hopefully) be out in the working world and vacations will take on a whole new look for them.

There is more than just football…

Football season is over and now it’s time to clean off your flip-flops and head into Spring Sports. When people think of UM sports, they immediately think of football but there are so many more sports for both Women and Men to participate and enjoy. After this year’s stellar football season, Miami fans have the momentum of cheering on our mighty ‘Canes to more success! Keep the momentum going, Men’s and Women’s basketball continuously delivers high-level playing to sold-out arenas and more Hurricanes spirit with Sebastian the Ibis leading the way.

Spring Sports

What sports do you think of when you think of Spring sports? Some of the wide variety of sports in the spring include basketball, track, diving, soccer, golf, tennis, volleyball, rowing, and baseball. There is an excellent way to keep track of all UM sporting events and dates, go to hurricanesports.com and don’t miss a single game or event. Be sure to check out the UM Baseball team at Mark Light Stadium and the Men’s and Women’s Basketball at the Watsco Center.  Men’s and Women’s swimming and diving meets are held at the Whitten University Center Pool. All the student-athletes appreciate your being there and cheering them on when they compete.

Best thing ever, HaveUHeard, UM students get in free to all sporting events, with the paid student activities fee and their Cane Card? That’s pretty awesome and lots of fun. So get ready to have some great sporting fun and cheering on your favorite sport!
