Make Sure Your Package Gets There

Whether it’s an Amazon Prime delivery or a care package from a loved one, there are many reasons students receive packages while living on campus.

Priority Mail Express that is received on Saturday morning will be made available to the residents between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and noon at the Forest Hills Station. Residents may call 813-935-3375 prior to driving to the Forest Hills Station to retrieve the Priority Mail Express. Forest Hills Station is located at 11800 North Florida Ave, Tampa Florida 33612. Priority Mail Express that is not retrieved during this time frame will be delivered on Monday to the USF Post Office.

Priority Mail Express will not be available on holidays. If your student lives on campus, they have the option of renting a mailbox, which they may do when filling out their resident information via the housing portal. If your student is not utilizing a mailbox, there are still several options for package pick-up. USPS mail is processed through the airport facility and then processed for pickup by the USF mail facility. After the mail is processed and sorted, students will receive an email indicating that their package is ready for pickup at one of the many mail locations on campus.

For in-state shipping, UPS typically arrives in one day at no additional fee (barring any weather issues). If you are sending packages purchased or fulfilled through Amazon, you might want to consider having them sent directly to an Amazon Locker. The closest one is located at 5601 E Fletcher Ave, at 7 Eleven.  Sometimes picking it up from Amazon is easier than having to navigate the package delivery to dorms. It is free with a student Prime Membership.

Student Residents receiving mail should use a correct address format and may obtain their own personal address from Housing and Residential Education. Inaccurately addressed mail will be delayed, missent or returned.

Here is an example of the proper way to address mail being sent to the dorms:

Resident Name (Required)

1 – 999 Argos Complex (no leading zeros)

Tampa, FL 33620-0001

To verify your student’s mailing address, click here and use the Look Up Your Mailing Address located at the bottom of the page. If you’re wondering what you should send your student on various occasions, check out our care package blog!

Care Packages

So, your college student has been away and you and your family are getting used to your new normal.  Even though your student is busy with notes, lectures, getting enough sleep, finding their “tribe”, doing their own laundry (hopefully), and figuring out how to be an adult, they may still be missing home.  They quickly realize that they are on their own to be successful in college, and that can bring on the feeling of homesickness.

I found that a great way to interrupt the stress of college is to send my daughter a care package.  And let’s face it, sending something to our kids helps us to still feel connected to them. Now, please know that I am no Martha Stewart, so I was not looking to spend a small fortune or to get the “best package” award, but I wanted to send something.

Where to start? A great parting gift that you can leave in their room or send as a package is this package of Open When College Pack envelopes. We suggest filling them with either a message, picture, or gift cards purchased in advance but we love the messages. When you take your first big test, when you’re sick, when you’re tired of dorm food, and more. Pinterest also has tons of ideas that are really great.  You don’t have to tackle Michaels and handmake every little thing.  You just need to know your kid. Some things to think about are: what have they mentioned lately, did they get into a sorority/fraternity, is their birthday coming up, what holiday is coming, or when are their midterms or exams?

My favorite way to send a care package is the post office’s Priority Mail flat rate boxes.  I used these many times because you can fill them to the brim for one flat rate, no matter the weight.  I like the Small Flat Rate Box which is $7.15 or the Medium Flat Rate Box which is $13.60 out the door. Of course, you can use any box to ship things in, but I really like the convenience of one price for priority shipping. If using UPS and shipping in the state, Ground typically gets it to its destination in one day. If you are using UPS, a great convenience is taking your packages to CVS since they now have UPS Access Points.

What to Send

I don’t care who you are; we all like to be surprised by knowing that someone we love is thinking about us.  I found that my daughter loved the little things: socks, new pens, chapstick, a new t-shirt, candy, protein bars, magnets, her school paraphernalia, holiday decorations, and pictures of her dog.  They probably won’t admit it, but a surprise package from home can really make their week.

Dollar Tree is a great place for small trinkets and seasonal items and decorations.  My younger daughter also had fun finding silly things to put in the package. We all know that Target has great items, the “dollar section” has great things like small photo frames, tech items, etc. that are inexpensive.  These stores are where I usually found my care package items, but you can find things anywhere.

If you are so inclined, think about buying 2, 3 or 4 of the same items and then you will be the rock-star mom who is also sending love to the roommates/suitemates.  Before the holiday break, I sent my daughter a box that had 4 mugs (carefully wrapped), hot chocolate packs, and little bags of mini marshmallows. Her suitemates loved it and they planned a movie night before they left for the holidays, and even sent me a picture of them holding their mugs.

HELP!

If you need someone else to put together and send a care package for you, there are lots of sites out there, many that cater to USF students. OCM or Our Campus Market offers premade boxes filled with goodies.  They run from about $25 to around $65. GourmetGiftBaskets.com works with USF and has premade baskets that are very nice as well.  They have lots of choices like a Homesick package that is $39.99 to a Graduation box that is about $80. These can be pricey, so that is why I stuck to the postal flat rate boxes.  Again, I would check out Pinterest for company ideas and even Amazon. We also like Tetherbox for care packages.

For those of you that wish to send soup to your sick kid, the USF Hillel will deliver soup to their dorm or apartment.  They have a Matzah Ball Soup Hotline and students or parents can call it to set up a delivery. They can be reached at 813-899-2788.

Known as “The booty-call of food delivery services” (yes, that’s the company slogan) ZBaked will deliver warm cookies to your student at USF.  I am told that these are “the best ever”, and are a great surprise for birthdays or the week of finals. I haven’t personally used GrubHub, but there are many restaurants that deliver to USF listed on their site, including Mrs. Fields Cookies.

Fandango gift card is a nice option as well. It’s not food, but it is perfect for vegging out.

Thousands of Dining Options

Like any big city, there are literally thousands of dining options from fast food to fast-casual, from family-style to fine dining. You will find your burgers, pizza, Cuban, Mexican, Chinese, barbecue, sushi, salads, Mediterranean, Indian, Caribbean, basically a restaurant from every continent, for every palate and every price point.

Just like with hotels, Tampa has many local and national chains that are super easy to find and are of great comfort when you do not know where to eat. I’m letting you know about the cool spots, the places the locals go to get their fix. Try a new restaurant! Tampa has many talented chefs!  Trust, me, if you enjoy dining out, you are going to eat some great meals while you are visiting here over the next four years!

When coming to Tampa to visit your student or tour the campus with a prospective student, what restaurants are must-visits? Below we give you a breakdown of a small sampling of some of our favorites.  There are so many dining options in our big city it is impossible to showcase them all. Eating out is a big deal in these parts, be adventurous, try new places, get off the beaten path and explore some of the unique neighborhoods Tampa has to offer.

Depending on the occasion, time of year, and what other events are happening in the city that weekend (and there are festivals and events year-round), you may not get into a specific restaurant unless you get there very early or make a reservation. Open Table is a common app used at many establishments throughout Tampa and the bay area. Considering your student will be at USF for at least four years, you should be able to try many of the restaurants that we personally recommend. Peak weekends and at some of the more popular selections, expect waits for an hour or 2 or more. Make reservations whenever possible.

Pro-tip #1
Yelp is a very robust app that lets customers rate their experience and food at a restaurant. I find Yelp in Tampa to be extremely robust and pretty accurate. You will read honest reviews from real customers about their experience. I highly recommend you use it and use it often to find great places to eat! Load it up on your phone and find your favorites before you even arrive.  Where you type in the “location” just enter one of the neighborhoods described below and start eating!

Pro-tip #2
Many restaurants in Tampa are open for both lunch and dinner. Sometimes going for lunch offers a shorter wait and less expensive meals while still enjoying terrific food!

Trending Neighborhoods

When visiting, you will often hear your student refer to areas in Tampa such as New Tampa, South Tampa, Carrollwood/Northdale, West Tampa, Ybor City…We have done the same, which will help you to speak your students’ language.

New Tampa

This area is just north of USF along Bruce B. Downs and closest to campus.  Some of our favorite restaurants that we have tried are Stonewood Grill & Tavern (try their bruschetta), Acropolis Greek Taverna which has belly dancers and bouzouki on the weekends, Ciccio Cali for healthier, yet yummy options, and Cracker Barrel.  I know Cracker Barrel isn’t exclusive to Tampa, but you just can’t beat a place that has awesome breakfast offered all day, and it’s only one mile from campus.

South Tampa

This area is the southern part of the city closest to Tampa Bay.  You will find narrow streets of cobblestone and a small-town feel.  Datz is a favorite of ours on S. MacDill Ave. Their food choices are amazing and they have really fun drinks.  You can get monkey bread as an appetizer and have the best home-made chips. Parking is bad there, so plan ahead. Panne Rustica is also on S. MacDill and is a lovely atmosphere with great wine.  On Swann on Swann Ave. uses local growers to supply some of their ingredients. They are contemporary cuisine with a seasonal menu.

Carrollwood/Northdale

This area is west of the USF area and we love the breakfast/brunch at First Watch on N. Dale Mabry.  They have healthy choices and fun ones, but weekends get crowded, so prepare to wait. For dinner, go to Shells on N. Dale Mabry.  It’s great, casual seafood and has been in Tampa for over 30 years. Michael’s Grill, also on N. Dale Mabry has lunch and dinner. I love their chopped salad and they have great specials. It’s a small restaurant with some outside seating as well.

West Tampa

This area holds so many dining options.  We like all of the choices at International Mall & Bay Street, and well as Coopers Hawk just down the street from the mall on W. Boy Scout Blvd.  If you are a wine drinker, then you will love their tasting room.

Ybor City

The Columbia Restaurant is a must-try option in Ybor. It is the oldest Hispanic restaurant in Florida and popular with tourists.  The décor and artwork are of Old World Cuba. Make a reservation and visit the shop to take Sangria mix home with you. The Tampa Bay Brewing Company is a microbrewery that also serves pub fare.  It is located in the Centro Ybor area. You can purchase samplings of Tampa brewed specialties.

In Addition to…

If you are looking for something extra special, there are a few restaurants that your Bull may not be aware of.  These are great for celebrations, etc.

Sparkman Wharf- formerly known as Channelside, this Dining Garden features ten of Tampa’s best restauranteurs experimenting with new culinary concepts in a relaxed outdoor waterfront setting. Restaurants include Boat Run Oyster Company, BT in a Box (French Vietnamese fusion), Flock and Stock chicken and burgers, Foundation Coffee Co., Gallito Taqueria, Montados Tapas & Wine, Edison’s Swigamajig (dive bar and fish kitchen), The Corners Pizza, and Whatever Pops (ice pops, gelato, acai bowls and more). Most of the restaurants are opened Wednesday – Sunday, 11 am – 11 pm

Bern’s Steakhouse – this very upscale restaurant is truly an experience.  You can’t beat the steaks, seafood, and wines. You must ask for a tour where you will see their wine cellar holding over a half-million bottles, as well as the kitchen where you can see your future fish dish swimming in the tanks.  There is also an amazing Dessert Room that has 48 private rooms with a menu like no other. Bern’s is located in South Tampa and has a dress code. It is business casual to semi-formal with jackets and ties recommended, but not required.  Be prepared because no flip-flops, t-shirts, or jeans are allowed. Celebrities often frequent Bern’s, so keep your eyes open.

Ulele (pronounced you-lay-lee) – for lunch or dinner, this unique restaurant inspires a modern, but old Florida feel.  The name comes from a Native American young girl’s love story. It is what the story of Pocahontas-John Smith is based on.  It is on the Tampa Waterfront near downtown and is very busy. You’ll want to take pictures here, as the views of Tampa are great.

Ocean Prime – this is our favorite!  Although it is a chain restaurant, the Tampa location is awesome.  You never know who will be there, and the sides are to die for. Whether you sit at the bar, or at a table, your experience will be very satisfying.  It is a great place to people watch, sit by a fire pit, or have smoking, bubbling cocktail (It’s called Berries & Bubbles). They have a couple of private rooms that can be used for graduation or birthday dinners.  Trust me, you will love this place.

I recommend having reservations for all of these restaurants. All of these places are ones that our family has tried.  Looking them up will give you menus, times, and a feel of the atmosphere suitable for your family. Well, what are you hungry for, it’s dinner time!?

Like any college town, there are literally hundreds of dining options from fast food to fast-casual, from family-style to fine dining. Whether you are eating dinner early or late, you will find your burgers, pizza, Mexican, Chinese, barbecue, sushi, salads, Mediterranean; a restaurant for every palate and every price point. Depending on whether you are touring with a prospective student or visiting your student in Tampa, who will undoubtedly be clamoring for a good meal, the options are plentiful. Some things to consider beforehand are price and time. It is not unusual for there to be a considerable wait, even with a reservation, on a game weekend or graduation, at some of the more popular selections.

So, because the Tampa Bay area is so large, I will share with you some great dining options all over the area.

Armature Works – Found on Tampa’s Riverwalk, you will love this restored multi-use building.  It has different eateries, a public market and event spaces.

Bartaco– highly recommend! A very trendy place located in Hyde Park where you can order a bunch of different street tacos.

Bearss – A spin on Southern favorites with wings, burgers, artisan pizzas, salads and more.

Besito – Mexican restaurant using local and fresh ingredients

Cantina Laredo – Located at the Wiregrass Mall, they offer excellent authentic Mexican food and drinks.

Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen – Located at the Tampa Premium Outlets, they have a huge menu with options that will suit any taste.

Columbia Restaurant – This piece of Tampa’s history is where you will find authentic Spanish food and atmosphere.  Located in Ybor City, must-haves are the Sangria, Cuban sandwich, Paella, and the 1905 Salad.

Ford’s Garage – Also located at the Outlets, they specialize in gourmet burgers.

On Swann – Located in Hyde Park in South Tampa, On Swann is a popular, classy place to be.  Their food is great and the full bar has tons of great choices.

Rooster & The Till – This place is located in the ever-changing Seminole Heights neighborhood.  It is up-and-coming with new construction and refurbishment and is a popular area for new places to eat and drink.

Sacred Pepper – This restaurant is located on N. Dale Mabry in north Tampa and is said to be Contemporary American with an Italian flair.  It has a nice atmosphere and fresh seafood and pasta.

Stonewood Grill & Tavern – Located in Tampa Palms, Stonewood has great steaks and sides.  Make a reservation to avoid a wait.

Sushi Cafe quality sushi and hibachi place and not too expensive.

Ulele – Located downtown on Highland Ave, this unique restaurant on the Hillsborough River is popular.  It has native-inspired dishes and a ten-foot diameter barbacoa grill. It is on Tampa’s Riverwalk, so a stroll along the river is worth the trip.

Wood Fired Pizza Wine Bar – Great place to go with friends and split a variety of pizzas. Definitely best pizza place close to campus

One thing to remember or consider is the time of year.  In Tampa, there are many exciting events and some may bring large crowds.  Gasparilla events, Lightning games, road races, and art festivals are just a few events that affect different areas of Tampa.  Making reservations ahead of time will help make your night out easier. Call ahead and ask if there are any events that may make the restaurant more crowded. Want to tie your dinner with something fun to do? Check out our blog here for ideas.

Becoming an official adult. How Fun!

It seems to be another rite of passage; turning 21. And if you are turning 21 during your college year, then you are probably going to want to celebrate. College students choose so many different ways to celebrate these days, from taking a trip with friends to a night out in town. But it usually involves your friends donning you with “21 and legal” party garb to announce to the world that you are finally legal. It also means that you can finally get into places that you were not allowed into before. So, here are some of the ways 21 & over students are celebrating.

In Tampa, a popular place to have some 21-fun is Ybor City. This historic area is home to cigar factories, nightclubs, and restaurants. It is adjacent to downtown and about a 13-minute drive. There are clubs that are more for the gothic/eclectic crowd as well as for the culturally diverse crowds. They are definitely not for everyone, so it’s best to ask around for people’s favorites. There are some great bars and restaurants where you can get a great meal while out partying.

Consider –  The Honey Pot, The Castle, The Ritz, Gaspar’s Grotto, Carmine’s, Amphitheater Ybor, or Double Decker.

In the South Howard or Channelside area of Tampa, you will find bars and restaurants that may be a little more classy and upscale. People are dressed to be seen, covers may be more, and the atmospheres usually have a more business class feel. It’s a little farther of a drive or Uber, but worth it.

Consider – Hyde Park Café, The Patio, On Swann, MacDinton’s Soho, Bar Louie (at International Mall), American Social (on Harbor Island), Hattricks, or Aja.

If you want to stay a little closer to USF:

Consider – Topgolf off of I-75, Miller’s Ale House-USF, Skippers Smokehouse on Skipper Road, World of Beer near Busch Gardens, Primebar, or Noble Crust at Wiregrass Mall.

Another fun time is going to Epcot at Disney. Yes, it’s a trip (an hour from USF), and most friends share a hotel for at least one night. It requires you to buy a ticket to get in or to have a pass, but new 21-year old’s like to “drink around the world” at Epcot. It’s not a cheap trip as you have to pay for every drink, etc. but you can’t miss seeing the matching shirts and drinking accessories of a celebrating group.

Finally, hit up some of the breweries closest to USF. These include:

And, as always, be careful and call for a ride when you are ready to go home. Sorry, I had to say it; it comes with my parental rights.

Who doesn’t enjoy getting a care package delivered?

We know you really care, you care a lot about your student and want them to be happy. Whether it is for a birthday, a little something to ease the stress of midterms or finals, a pick me up when they are feeling sick, holiday treats, or congratulations on a job well done; there are many options that will surely bring a smile to your student’s face. Sometimes it is nice to go with the local shops; most all deliver. Then again, there are some excellent national choices too. We have given you plenty to choose from– all of which our kids, interns, or we like. All you have to do now is decide what to send. There is variety there too. For instance; if you are looking for sweets (and who isn’t?) for a birthday, pick me up, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, religious holidays, or just because…
