Make Sure Your Package Gets There

Whether it’s an Amazon Prime delivery or a care package from a loved one, there are many reasons students receive packages while living on campus.

Priority Mail Express that is received on Saturday morning will be made available to the residents between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and noon at the Forest Hills Station. Residents may call 813-935-3375 prior to driving to the Forest Hills Station to retrieve the Priority Mail Express. Forest Hills Station is located at 11800 North Florida Ave, Tampa Florida 33612. Priority Mail Express that is not retrieved during this time frame will be delivered on Monday to the USF Post Office.

Priority Mail Express will not be available on holidays. If your student lives on campus, they have the option of renting a mailbox, which they may do when filling out their resident information via the housing portal. If your student is not utilizing a mailbox, there are still several options for package pick-up. USPS mail is processed through the airport facility and then processed for pickup by the USF mail facility. After the mail is processed and sorted, students will receive an email indicating that their package is ready for pickup at one of the many mail locations on campus.

For in-state shipping, UPS typically arrives in one day at no additional fee (barring any weather issues). If you are sending packages purchased or fulfilled through Amazon, you might want to consider having them sent directly to an Amazon Locker. The closest one is located at 5601 E Fletcher Ave, at 7 Eleven.  Sometimes picking it up from Amazon is easier than having to navigate the package delivery to dorms. It is free with a student Prime Membership.

Student Residents receiving mail should use a correct address format and may obtain their own personal address from Housing and Residential Education. Inaccurately addressed mail will be delayed, missent or returned.

Here is an example of the proper way to address mail being sent to the dorms:

Resident Name (Required)

1 – 999 Argos Complex (no leading zeros)

Tampa, FL 33620-0001

To verify your student’s mailing address, click here and use the Look Up Your Mailing Address located at the bottom of the page. If you’re wondering what you should send your student on various occasions, check out our care package blog!

Well, what are you hungry for, it’s dinner time!?

Like any college town, there are literally hundreds of dining options from fast food to fast-casual, from family-style to fine dining. Whether you are eating dinner early or late, you will find your burgers, pizza, Mexican, Chinese, barbecue, sushi, salads, Mediterranean; a restaurant for every palate and every price point. Depending on whether you are touring with a prospective student or visiting your student in Tampa, who will undoubtedly be clamoring for a good meal, the options are plentiful. Some things to consider beforehand are price and time. It is not unusual for there to be a considerable wait, even with a reservation, on a game weekend or graduation, at some of the more popular selections.

So, because the Tampa Bay area is so large, I will share with you some great dining options all over the area.

Armature Works – Found on Tampa’s Riverwalk, you will love this restored multi-use building.  It has different eateries, a public market and event spaces.

Bartaco– highly recommend! A very trendy place located in Hyde Park where you can order a bunch of different street tacos.

Bearss – A spin on Southern favorites with wings, burgers, artisan pizzas, salads and more.

Besito – Mexican restaurant using local and fresh ingredients

Cantina Laredo – Located at the Wiregrass Mall, they offer excellent authentic Mexican food and drinks.

Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen – Located at the Tampa Premium Outlets, they have a huge menu with options that will suit any taste.

Columbia Restaurant – This piece of Tampa’s history is where you will find authentic Spanish food and atmosphere.  Located in Ybor City, must-haves are the Sangria, Cuban sandwich, Paella, and the 1905 Salad.

Ford’s Garage – Also located at the Outlets, they specialize in gourmet burgers.

On Swann – Located in Hyde Park in South Tampa, On Swann is a popular, classy place to be.  Their food is great and the full bar has tons of great choices.

Rooster & The Till – This place is located in the ever-changing Seminole Heights neighborhood.  It is up-and-coming with new construction and refurbishment and is a popular area for new places to eat and drink.

Sacred Pepper – This restaurant is located on N. Dale Mabry in north Tampa and is said to be Contemporary American with an Italian flair.  It has a nice atmosphere and fresh seafood and pasta.

Stonewood Grill & Tavern – Located in Tampa Palms, Stonewood has great steaks and sides.  Make a reservation to avoid a wait.

Sushi Cafe quality sushi and hibachi place and not too expensive.

Ulele – Located downtown on Highland Ave, this unique restaurant on the Hillsborough River is popular.  It has native-inspired dishes and a ten-foot diameter barbacoa grill. It is on Tampa’s Riverwalk, so a stroll along the river is worth the trip.

Wood Fired Pizza Wine Bar – Great place to go with friends and split a variety of pizzas. Definitely best pizza place close to campus

One thing to remember or consider is the time of year.  In Tampa, there are many exciting events and some may bring large crowds.  Gasparilla events, Lightning games, road races, and art festivals are just a few events that affect different areas of Tampa.  Making reservations ahead of time will help make your night out easier. Call ahead and ask if there are any events that may make the restaurant more crowded. Want to tie your dinner with something fun to do? Check out our blog here for ideas.

The Best Apps for USF Students

I always feel old when I say, ‘back in my day’, but the truth is that back in my day, we lived in a world without apps, cell phones, tablets, and computers.  To get information at school, you had to visit the information boards, get printed schedules, and visit office after office just to get school business done.  Today, our kids have everything at their fingertips. Information is instant, convenient, and plentiful. Apps provide no need to walk miles around campus to set up tutoring appointments, pay bills, or even to eat.  There are a lot of useful apps that USF students use, and here are a few of them:

USF and College Studying Apps

  • apps.usf.edu Application Gateway – This provides over 40 software applications for personal use.  Log in with a USF NetID and they can be accessed from any computer anywhere.
  • Archivum – Allows you to access USF services and resources within the app. For example, scheduling advising appointments, check your admissions status, and much more
  • BullTracker – This app gives real-time information about campus bus locations and arrival predictions.
  • Career Fair Plus – This app allows you to see all career fair events, see the lists of employers and jobs.
  • Discount-A-Bull- Shows you food deals around campus
  • EasyBib by Chegg – With EasyBib Plus, students can use the plagiarism checker to find missing citations, and fix them before submitting their paper. Also, easily catch writing style and grammar errors with easy-to-understand explanations on how to improve their writing for next time. No matter what citation style (APA, MLA, Chicago etc.), EasyBib Plus will help create the right bibliography. Right now, students get a 3-day free trial of the product.
  • FindMyClass – Just select the USF Tampa campus, plug in the building for your class, and a map will give you directions to the building and estimated time of arrival.
  • Gas Buddy – This shows the closest and cheapest gas around town and even offers cashback rewards which are helpful for commuter students.
  • Google Calendar – Allows students to sync their Canvas calendar to their personal calendar. This is a great help when trying to stay organized with deadlines
  • Google Drive –  allows you to access all drive documents on your phone
  • Grammarly’s mobile keyboard is the personal editor you can take with you wherever you go. Best plagiarism checker & proofreader.
  • Handshake – This is an online career management system that students can use to find jobs, research companies, view events, and interact with a Career Consultant.
  • Herd Perks – Get rewarded to checking in to events at USF!
  • Herd Perks: app where you can get rewarded for checking in to events at USF while also allowing you to stay up to date with events at USF
  • MoBull Messenger – This security app notifies students of emergency updates via text.  You must opt-in through NetID Account Services. Students can also sign up for features like Eyewitness, Guardian, and Smart 911.
  • MyUSF – This is the first app a new student will download because it provides access to courses, schedules, instructors, accounts, maps, events, and so much more.  It also gives access to CANVAS, GEMS, FAST, and OASIS. This app is all things USF!
  • Parkmobile – This allows you to pay for timed parking spaces through your cell phone.
  • Social Bicycles – This is part of the Share-A-Bull Bikes program.  With a pass purchase, you can unlock a bike, use it, and return it to any bike rack on campus within the operational area.
  • The USF counseling center has compiled a list of apps that offer meditation, relaxation, and mindfulness to help with the stresses of college.
  • TopHat – a lot of professors use this app to answer daily questions for attendance points.
  • USF Campus Maps- Helps you navigate the USF campus on the go and allows you to lookup buildings by their codes.
  • USF Maps App – These maps provide many travel resources from parking, bicycle sharing lots, and BullRunner routes.
  • USF SAFE – official app of USF that helps you stay safe around campus. Some of the features include sending you safety alerts, sending your location to USF security real-time, tip reporting that allows you to send in anonymous safety concerns to USF, etc.

Restaurants & Entertainment

  • Pocket Points – I love this one. It literally incentivizes students to keep their phones out of sight during class. They just open the app, lock their phone, and earn points for the time it is off. Later they can trade the points for discounts at certain restaurants and local and online businesses (Office Depot). There is even Double Point Tuesday. (which is great since my daughter has three classes on Tuesdays.)
  • Tapingo – This allows students to order and pay for food for pickup at all USF restaurants, and syncs with USF Bull Bucks well.
  • UConnection – A food and drink app with exclusive deals, daily specials and more from restaurants and bars
  • UberEATS too, so they don’t have to stop studying to go pick up dinner. UberEATS brings the food directly to them
  • And when you need coffee, download Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks to pay for your purchase and earn rewards.
  • DoorDash – This is the same concept as UberEats and Postmates. They have an easy app that guides you through your order. They have also launched Project Dash. This initiative helps tackle food waste and hunger in the local communities that they serve.
  • EatStreet – online and mobile food ordering and delivery service provider
  • GrubHub – Simply browse menus, pick what you want, and submit your order.  Local suggestions are great and most deliveries are around $3. They run specials if you sign up for their emails, so get that setup.
  • Fandango NOW – Another streaming service offering movie rentals.
  • Seamless –  For food delivery. Part of the Grubhub portfolio. Earn rewards with their Perks

Money, Finances & Getting Around

  • FindMyClass – Just select the USF Tampa campus, plug in the building for your class, and a map will give you directions to the building and estimated time of arrival.
  • GasBuddy- Shows the closest and cheapest gas around town and even offers cash-back rewards. Helpful for commuter students.
  • Mint – My daughter is a big fan of this one. Managing money while in college can be a struggle. Mint is a budgeting app that helps students keep track of their finances, as well as help them understand where they can make some budget cuts of their own.
  • Student Beans – For instant access to discounts and all you need is your student ID.
  • Uber – This is another app they may already have and creates no excuse for putting themselves in an unsafe situation. Lyft is an alternative to using Uber.
  • Rover – if you need a pet sitter while you are away or at classes or you want to become a pet sitter
  • USF Maps App – These maps provide many travel resources from parking, bicycle sharing lots, and BullRunner routes.
  • USF SAFE – This app helps you stay safe around campus. It sends safety alerts, can send your location to authorities in real-time and can help you to report activities.
  • Venmo – Your student probably already has it, but this app allows people to split bills, pay their share of things like groceries, meals, Uber rides, etc.  It’s also a great way for parents to “pay” their kids when they need extra money.

For music, many students recommend Spotify and Pandora.

Health, Wellness & Fitness Apps

  • Booster Buddy – Booster Buddy is a free app designed to help teens and young adults improve their mental health. Managing personal wellness journeys as you are guided through a series of daily quests designed to establish and sustain positive habits.
  • Brain.fm – A collaboration between scientists, musicians, and developers creating music to support you in everyday activities–helping people get more done, feel more relaxed, or get better sleep.
  • Calm – App for Sleep, Meditation, and Relaxation, with over 50 million downloads and over 700,000 5-star reviews.
  • Commune – offers free virtual yoga and mediation studio
  • Headspace – Maybe this should have been the first one I wrote about. I use this one too because everyone deserves a mental break. For students who want to improve their mental health, not just maintain it, the Headspace app is the perfect place to start. It acts like a personal trainer for meditation, taking just ten minutes a day to guide your brain toward developing meditation muscle-memory. They offer a ten-day trial. If nothing else, the app is a daily reminder that for ten minutes a day, we all should calm down, breathe, dislocate from any stresses and surroundings, and try to focus on how we feeling on a deeper level. (Note: I included parents here too, because, well, the world would be a better place if we all did this.)
  • Insight Timer – A collection of free guided meditations, with over 30,000 titles.
  • Glo – Offers free yoga, mediation, and pilates practices.
  • Journey Meditation – A LIVE group mediation app
  • MindValley – The Mindvalley curriculum is designed to unleash the fullest potential of your mind, body, and spirit. Offers free masterclasses
  • MyWellness – This connects with most workout machines at the 3 USF recreation facilities and allows students to track their progress.
  • Myfitnesspal – Download and sign up for this popular fitness app. Search ‘Aramark on Campus’ and all menu items will be there.  A great way to stay healthy and stay on track.
  • MindShift –  MindShift is an app designed to help teens and young adults cope with anxiety. It can help you change how you think about anxiety. Rather than trying to avoid anxiety, you can make an important shift and face it.
  • Omvana – Omvana gives you access to hundreds of meditation tracks for all levels, from advanced meditations to get you into deep states of mind to bite-sized sessions for busy people.
  • Tactical Breather – Tactical Breathing Trainer can be used to gain control over physiological and psychological responses to stress. Through repetitive practice and training, students learn to gain control of heart rate, emotions, concentration, and other physiological and psychological responses to the body during stressful situations.

Eating on a Budget

One of the not-so-fun things parents do is to teach their children to budget, about money and how to handle it.  We’ve all heard it; teach them about money young, and they will be more responsible as adults. For me, I can say that I tried, but we truly started when my children were in high school.  They each had their own bank accounts with their own debit cards. They did their best, but if there was money in their account, they spent it. Turning 18 does not mean that they don’t need guidance in this area because they do.  So, the summer before my oldest went to college, we had a “meeting” explaining how her money situation was going to be handled. We explained the amount per month she would have, what we were willing to pay for, and that if she was running low, then she better plan on eating peanut butter sandwiches for a while (she was not on a meal plan).  If that meant having to say no to friends making a frozen yogurt run, or no to Saturday sushi, then so be it. It’s not fun “putting your foot down”, but that’s parenting.

That being said, if your student is planning their money wisely, then they won’t need to miss out on much.  Luckily, there are plenty of places to eat on and off campus that help them to keep their budgets.

If they are on a meal plan, encourage them to bring back an extra apple, banana, or even dry cereal for a snack later.  Also, on campus, the Marshall Study Center has many food specials and doorbusters for places in the food court/restaurants in the Marshall Center.  Free cookie breaks, free apples and trail mix, and even a Subway picnic are some of the treats offered. Most of these are offered during exam time, so check their schedule.

A useful app for USF students is Discount-A-Bull.  It can save you up to 50% off your next meal at places around USF.  Just pick the discount and show it to your server. For some reason, some students don’t like to ask if there is a discount for USF students.  “You never know, unless you ask” applies here. Have them ask everywhere they go because some places will offer a discount that is not published anywhere.  And some places will give you a discount if you “check-in” tagging their Facebook page.

There are tons of places that give discounts and can help students keep their budgets.

These places offer a 10% discount with a USF ID:

Jason’s Deli

Wings Express

Dunkin Donuts

Firehouse Subs

Moe’s

CDB Pizza

Which Wich

Denny’s

Village Inn

Evos – Located on Fowler Ave. Get a 12% discount on value meals and they deliver to campus.

Takara – Gives USF students 20% off.

SoFresh – Has student deal Saturdays where they get 20% off a meal, and on Fridays, they have Facebook Fan Special offering soup for 99 cents if you mention their Facebook ad.

Five Star Pizza – Gives a 25% discount with ID plus $1.50 delivery charge to campus.

Chipotle – Gives 15% off.

Qdoba – Offers a free drink with a student ID.

Chick-fil-A – Offers a free drink with a student ID.

Saki House – Offers $5 sushi rolls after 10 pm every day.

Again, students won’t get a discount if they don’t ask. They will soon find their go-to places for cheap meals.  Once they get the hang of budgeting, they will (hopefully) make it a habit. If you visit your Bull, don’t plan on seeing any of these places, as they will want you to take them to restaurants they presently can’t afford. For a list of those restaurants, see our blog on restaurants.

Who doesn’t enjoy getting a care package delivered?

We know you really care, you care a lot about your student and want them to be happy. Whether it is for a birthday, a little something to ease the stress of midterms or finals, a pick me up when they are feeling sick, holiday treats, or congratulations on a job well done; there are many options that will surely bring a smile to your student’s face. Sometimes it is nice to go with the local shops; most all deliver. Then again, there are some excellent national choices too. We have given you plenty to choose from– all of which our kids, interns, or we like. All you have to do now is decide what to send. There is variety there too. For instance; if you are looking for sweets (and who isn’t?) for a birthday, pick me up, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, religious holidays, or just because…

Where to start? A great parting gift that you can leave in their room or send as a package is this package of Open When College Pack envelopes. We suggest filling them with either a message, picture, or gift cards purchased in advance but we love the messages. When you take your first big test, when you’re sick, when you’re tired of dorm food, and more.

Note: GF or V indicates gluten-free and vegan are available.

Locally we recommend:

Delivery, It Is So Easy!

When I was in college, the only delivery available was pizza delivery. Getting a five-dollar pizza delivered right to my dorm was so satisfying and easy.  Today, you really don’t even have to leave your dorm or apartment to get a good meal. Food delivery has become a huge business and for college students, it couldn’t be easier. Here are some of the delivery services that we have found and what they deliver and how they work.

  • Bite Squad – With Bite Squad, you put in where you are, what you are interested in, and the local options with come up. Booking fees are listed with each restaurant and you can schedule your delivery for any time of day.
  • DoorDash – This is the same concept as UberEats and Postmates. They have an easy app that guides you through your order. They have also launched Project Dash. This initiative helps tackle food waste and hunger in the local communities that they serve.
  • Eat24 – This is powered by GrubHub and is super easy to navigate. Just type your address in the search and they will show you restaurants currently delivering to your area.  There can be a minimum amount spent, depending on the restaurant.
  • GoPuff – They will do a fast delivery for a variety of items for a fee of $1.95. Can order anything from groceries, over the counter care products, home essentials, personal care, and even pet supplies through their app.
  • GrubHub – Simply browse menus, pick what you want, and submit your order. Local suggestions are great and most deliveries are around $3. They run specials if you sign up for their emails, so get that setup.
  • Instacart – This delivery service is easy and fast. They deliver groceries and other things from many different stores including Publix, Whole Foods, Costco, and CVS. Log in with your location to see the list of stores available.
  • Mobile Meals – Delivery from many USF area restaurants. Their mobile app makes things easy and most deliveries are $3.99.  Simply pick a restaurant from their list, tell them where you are, order, and wait for your food to be delivered. They have a chat option if you would like help with suggestions and clarification of your order as well.
  • Panera & Chipotle now deliver as well.
  • Publix – The first delivery is on them, so sign up. It is online shopping, convenient, and easy for those that don’t or can’t get to the grocery store.
  • Shipt – Get 2 weeks free and $15 off your first order on deliveries from stores like Publix, Costco, Target, and ABC Fine Wines & Spirits. Let their shoppers do what your student doesn’t have time to. Work for Shipt and you get paid to shop for others.
  • UberEats – This is the same concept as Uber, but they deliver food. The app is easy and you can track your order, from when it is being prepared, to when your driver has your food and is on their way. You can leave your tip on the app as well. Fees vary depending on location and restaurant but they are listed when you order. They even deliver from ice cream shops!

Did you know that that the word desserts is stressed spelled backward?  Well, there will come a time when all a college kid wants is something sweet.  Whether it’s a late-night run or celebrating a test or a project getting done, the need for satisfying ice cream, cupcakes, or yogurt is real.  Let’s face it, there really doesn’t have to be a specific reason for dessert, right?

Here are some of our favorites:
