Look Your Beauty Best!

When planning for college, we rarely think about the fact that our kids may still have to visit hair salons and barbershops or get the occasional manicure and so on. Let’s face it; they want to maintain their beauty, magnificence (and sometimes even hygiene). We certainly can’t expect them to go from August until Thanksgiving without maintaining their beauty routines. For your beauty & the beast, I’ve asked around and my daughter and her friends have tried many of these to upkeep their beauty routines.

Barbers

Nails

Hair Salons and Blow Dry Bars

If your beauty & the beast is getting a haircut, you may want to know that they have the option to sell their hair online. If they are going to get their hair cut anyway, they can sell the locks that are lopped off. High-quality hair can be valued at over $500 and with so many people getting their first post-pandemic haircuts, we’ve got a price calculator.

Brows/Eyelash Tinting/Spray Tans

Tattoos

Not surprisingly, for your beauty & the beast, there is plenty to choose from; the questions may be which are most affordable, conveniently located, and have hours that fit students’ schedules.  My daughter and her friends were partial to the spray tanning, it seemed to be a weekend social outing, but most of the salons had cost-saving deals on tanning packages.

What Is The Real Rush Story?

What really is a fraternity rush? So many times, we think about a fraternity and think of the movie Animal House.  The brothers are living in a house that is disgusting, everyone is partying, drinking alcohol, and doing drugs.  Certainly, if a fraternity is engaging in behavior that crosses the line, they should, and will, end up either on suspension or maybe even kicked off-campus. But talk with many of the young men in fraternities at IU, and they will speak of brotherhood, a lifetime of friendships and access to leadership positions on campus. This is what the rushing process is like.

Being in a fraternity is a huge part of many students’ social life at Indiana University. The way rush is handled for fraternities is radically different than sororities at Indiana. I am here to give you the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to rushing a fraternity. Unlike women joining the Panhellenic community, men have the opportunity to rush in fall at the end of September, as well as Springtime in January. Guys can do either rush they wish. The process starts off by attending an orientation session. After orientation, they are encouraged to go to rush tables as well as open houses to meet the guys involved in one of the 25 different chapters at Indiana University. Sign up if you are interested in participating in the rush process at Indiana University.

Typically, there will be rush tables at the Union.. This is when all the fraternities set up tables and it’s basically just an extra opportunity to meet fraternity brothers and get your name out there. This may seem simple, however, there are typically over one hundred brothers surrounding these tables in order to start a basic conversation.

Open Houses

Half of the fraternity houses at Indiana hold open houses on Monday and Wednesday while the remaining houses hold open houses on Tuesday and Wednesday. Guys are allowed to go to any fraternity house they are interested in- they are not required to go to every house, especially the ones they believe would not be a good fit. They are, however, encouraged to go to as many of the houses during the first two nights of the open house. In my opinion, the more houses you go to, the better opportunity you have to get in a fraternity.  It is important for your sons to stay open-minded throughout the process. It is the guy’s job to make a good impression so that the members of the fraternity know who they are. It is helpful if you already have a friend in a fraternity house too; that’s one more advantage someone else may not have.

Towards the end of the rush week, guys should narrow down their houses to their top two so that all of their time and attention can be put towards at least two fraternities. This will show their dedication, determination, and passion towards that specific fraternity. It is very important to talk to as many fraternity brothers as possible while also forming connections. If a fraternity likes a guy going through recruitment, they will typically let them know throughout the week. For the most part, there are no surprises.

As for how to dress, they recommend wearing something they feel comfortable in but also something that will make a good first impression. They do not recommend potential members wear a suit or sport coat.

Fraternities are often in the national spotlight due to hazing at various college campuses. Many universities are taking a very strict approach to suspend any organization for any infraction that falls under their definition of hazing. Talk to your student before he accepts a bid as to how to handle any situation that makes him feel uncomfortable. Hazing is strictly forbidden at IU and can be reported anonymously by filling out an incident report.

Greek life does give you a lot of amazing opportunities- such as life long friends and opportunities to grow your future. However, these benefits do not come without a price tag. Dues range from about $500-$1,500 per semester. Some activities will cost extra; like formals which usually take them out of town and can be as much as $300-$500 for the weekend. All in all, if students can get through rushing and pledging, brotherhood is a beautiful thing. For more specific information on Indiana University’s fraternity rush process.

Managing the Gap

Although it feels like you just moved your students into their dorms, you now have to move them out. The worst part is that some may be returning in just a few weeks to move back somewhere. And, if they return earlier in August, whether it be another dorm, sorority, or fraternity house or an apartment, having to schlep their stuff back home to return in just a few weeks seems a little silly. I know how many carloads it took to get my daughter moved in and, frankly, if I lived locally I would not have been prepared to rent a U-Haul to get her home and back again. So, my first piece of advice is to recommend that they start bringing things home over Spring Break or if you visit, take home a few things that they really aren’t using. I guarantee there is something. I hope this info helps you manage the gap.

Sorority recruitment starts the week before students return for the Spring semester; they are able to move into the dorms and sometimes new apartments. If they will be living in the sorority house, they are all set. If they are staying in the same apartment they lived in the previous year, then all should be fine too. If it is a new apartment, it will depend on how quickly the complex can flip the apartment and have it ready to move in. Of course, an earlier move-in date than specified on the lease might mean paying a fee. Some apartments charge by the day and others have a flat rate; they generally change each year. As in our case, my daughter was in the dorm and was allowed back in for a nominal fee, although she did grumble that the cafeteria was not open the first two days.

There are a few apartments that offer “As-Is” to move in early. Word of caution – you most likely will be walking into an enormous mess with food left in refrigerators, overfilled garbage cans, chips in the paint on the wall, and well, you get my point… it is why they call it “As-Is.” You can decide if being able to move in is more important than moving into a cleaned apartment. You can always hire a cleaning company at your own expense. Read I’m Not Your Maid for the name of cleaning companies.

Some sorority sisters that already have apartments may open them up to sisters that would otherwise be basically homeless for Rush Week. Other girls will bunk in their sorority house, but that can get very crowded. Sometimes students with apartments will rent out rooms for that week. Lastly, some girls have suggested finding an Airbnb in the area. It should be less expensive than a hotel, which some students share as an option, as well.

Organization during the move

The next question is what to do with all their stuff during this gap. If they are living on someone’s couch during Rush Week, they will need to store their things or perhaps have them brought up to school later when they can actually move into their new place. Or, and this is my preference, leave their things in short-term storage for the few weeks between semesters. Some companies will pack and move for them too. Guys and Dollies, for instance, will do all of this. There are many storage facilities in the area that can be rented on a short-term basis. Consider sharing the space and cost with a friend during the gap. For some suggested storage and moving companies, read our blog on Storage.

Get Ready For the Big Game Hoosiers, With These Attire Tips!

The best feeling for any college student, particularly if you’re a Hoosier, is waking up knowing it is game day! There is so much preparation that goes into game days: where to tailgate, who to squad up with, and what to wear. Showing up to tailgates and games is more than just rocking your school colors, it is showing your spirit and how much you love your school. It almost feels like a school-wide competition: who can get the most spirited? With this list, you’ll be sure to place in first!

It is important that whenever you are shopping for game day attire, you strictly look for your school colors. You don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb wearing the one color that doesn’t match with everyone else. Most students go all out wearing crimson and cream. Yes, some most people do wind up wearing red and white though because let’s face it, red and white are way easier to find.

If you are on a budget, then definitely stick with the basics: red or white-colored tanks and t-shirts. Denim is always the move for game days, especially some cute distressed jean shorts or a pair of white overalls with a red crop top underneath. I am also always a fan of a flowy, cheerleading like a white skirt with a fun red top from Princess Polly. In this outfit, you will not only look amazing at every tailgate, but you will be comfortable too! If you want to get a little more decked out in spirited gear, then you can choose from metallic fashion tattoos, IU masks, and customizable sunnies, to add a bit more fun to your outfit. We also really like By Gabby and Gameday Couture Social House.

Your top is one of the things people notice the most, so it needs to make a statement. Most girls like to show off fun DIY cut up t-shirts. If you want to test out your DIY skills, you can get awesome shirts from places like Target or Walmart for a great price. If you are confident in your DIY skills, try acid-washing your shirts!  Next time you want to spend the night in, get a group of friends together and turn t-shirts into crop tops, tank tops, halters, and more! The options are endless and always make an outfit. You can look up how to DIY cut up t-shirt.

Not the artsy type, don’t stress, Talk Tailgate To Me has plenty of adorable tops perfect for IU tailgates. I have a few staple IU tailgate tops but for the most time, students like to buy crimson and cream-colored clothing so that way they can wear the clothes all year round rather than strictly just at tailgates. We also like Tailgate Tailor, Treasure Trove, and Broke College Girl for customized game day clothes.

We absolutely love, Show Me Your Mumu’s line of cute and trendy gameday outfits. If you want to get creative and have matching accessories with your friends, a customizable Game Day Bracelet is a must! Opt for your team’s colors and each bracelet comes with 8 chic gold letters for mixing and matching to create your favorite slogans and phrases that make it clear who you’re rooting for. Please note, this bracelet will arrive unassembled but will be a great activity for your next girl’s night.

Feeling more like a team player than a cheerleader? We have something for you, too! Wearing your team’s jersey is one of the best ways to show off your love for the Hoosiers. Sometimes girls will wear an oversized jersey with a cute belt. You can get a jersey with your favorite number or even get a personalized jersey with any name and number you like. To top off your look, accessorize with a clear bag from Score Gameday bags. Use the code HUH15 for a 15% discount. Most stadiums implement a clear bag policy, so why not have a clear bag that still has style? Round out your outfit with some statement earrings

Guys have it a little easier and stick to a more simplified look. Dry fit and polo tops are the go-to for most as long as it has their school logo. You can check out a bunch of options on Fanatics. I recommend getting a few different colored polos because the guys tend to get a lot of use out of them. To protect from the hot sun, guys also love to sport an IU hat and don’t forget about the face covering while you’re at it. Regardless of your style, don’t forget to wear sunscreen and drink a ton of water. Game days are long and often hot so be sure to stay safe and hydrated or else you will not have a fun Sunday morning.

We all know Bloomington and it will go from sunny and 85 to snowfall within a matter of a week. When it starts to get a bit cooler in the season, a lot of fans wear school spirited sweatshirts. Tailgate leggings with a white coat will be the perfect outfit for when you want to rep the Hoosiers while still staying warm! Deck yourself out in all things that represent Indiana University. Show off your colors all day, every day! Your team will thank you!

Go Hoosiers!
