The Best Season, Football Season

The University of Maryland is a member of the Big Ten Conference, meaning Fall football is highly anticipated. UMD is a huge sports school and all the home games are super fun and a big deal. If you are planning on taking a trip to College Park for a Fall football game, there are some things you should know before you make your way down to the Maryland Stadium.

HaveUHeard that all UMD students get free tickets for home football games? Students can register online with their UID to request tickets for all home football games. All rules regarding student tickets are found in the Student Ticket Policy. Student tickets are for the student section, so if you are planning on attending a game with your student, be sure to purchase a regular ticket for them as well so that you all can sit together. For parents and friends, tickets can be purchased through UMD’s ticket site or StubHub. Be sure you purchase tickets as soon as you can because they go fast and can become pricey. For updated ticket information in regard to Covid-19 protocols, even for season ticket holders, you may want to check here.

Make sure you read our guide to football seats as well as where to pregame before heading for the game. If you cannot make it to the game, there are plenty of Watch Parties throughout the country.

Plan Ahead

The most common weekends parents come to football games are Parents Weekend and Homecoming. These weekends are a huge deal at UMD where parents and family come from all over the country to watch the Terps play and attend some fun events. One major tip is to book a hotel room as soon as you know the weekend you want to come for a game, especially if you want to come on a popular weekend. Hotels fill up fast so be sure to look out at the rates and plan accordingly. See our blog on hotels!

Just like many other schools across the country, UMD has a clear bag policy. If you want to stay stylish even with the clear bag policy, we recommend Score Gameday bags. They have clear bags in all four UMD colors. Use code HUH15 for a 15% discount!

Traditions

UMD has a history of over 150 years and has plenty of traditions that have come out of their time as a university. A fan favorite is the Flag Unfurling. During both football and basketball games, two giant pieces of the Maryland state flag are unfurled from the top of the two student sections while a historical video set to the “2001: A Space Odyssey” theme song plays. Being under the flag while it is waving in Maryland pride is a tradition students love to participate in.

Just like many other schools, the University of Maryland has a Football Victory Song and Alma Mater. Following every home game, the actual Maryland football and the team make their way over to the student section to sing both the Maryland victory song and alma mater.

2020 Gameday Schedule

Note: Like everything else, including football, that continues to surprise us, the football schedule may change too. Double-check dates as they get closer.

Game Day Attire

People go all out on Game Day in order to rep the Terps. When attending a game be sure you are wearing one or all four of UMD’s school colors. If you want some trendy suggestions, we have some for both parents and students!

and as always… GO TERPS!

Homecoming- It’s about the game.

One of the most exciting events at any college is Homecoming. There is so much to look forward to, so much excitement, and so much fun! At the University of Maryland, Homecoming is a major event where you can show your Terp pride alongside alumni, parents, and friends. The vibe is contagious!

At Maryland, Homecoming is a week-long celebration. Be sure to have Maryland gear in all colors as each day will typically have a theme. Check out our Black Red White Show Your Spirit for Terps blog for some great outfit suggestions or the UMD bookstore in the Stamp Student Union if you need to ramp up your wardrobe. Activities and events occur each day, including shows, competitions, crab feasts, and much more.  There is something for everyone during the Homecoming week. Keep an open mind and try something new. There are so many events that you can check out and enjoy!

The highlight of Homecoming week is football weekend. This is where you’ll get the most bang for your buck as a visitor on campus. Friday starts with an awesome carnival, where you can play carnival games, win prizes, eat carnival food, and watch student performances. Who doesn’t love a funnel cake? This day ends with an amazing fireworks show on the center of campus. It’s not to be missed! Over the weekend, find the Beer Garden for adults and the Testudo Tikes Zone for the little ones.

Of course, you’d be remiss if you skipped the Homecoming football game. You can’t miss an opportunity to cheer on your team at the big game! Tickets and parking passes are for sale on the ticketing website. Plan in advance, because parking can definitely be a challenge.

All football games at Maryland are fun and the energy is high, but Homecoming takes it to another level. Be sure to book your hotels early, be prepared to be patient, and possibly Uber everywhere. You are guaranteed a good time, but be sure to have patience. Check out the University Homecoming website for more information.

Guide to Seats at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium

Everyone should attend at least one UMD football game! Cheering on the Terp football players from the student section will truly be some of your best memories in college. Or, perhaps you or your family want to get season tickets. In past years, Terp games have proven to be pretty exciting and they are anticipating another thrilling season. One of the keys to making it great, however, is knowing where to sit. For instance, the blazing sun can make a big difference in the fun factor of a game. Here are some thoughts about the best seats for football games. Keep in mind that due to COVID-19, there has not been a release on restrictions regarding football games yet but UMD will take every precaution to make sure that the campus is a safe environment for all students.

Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium Seating

It is essential to plan out your seats when going to a game. The Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium has various different types of seating from premium sections to student sections. Below are the options for seating at the stadium.

  • Mezzanine Seating is considered to be some of the best seating at the Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium. Fans lucky enough to score a seat in this premium area get the best the stadium has to offer with chairback seating, complimentary in-seat food and beverage services, and covered seating with overhead heaters for when it gets cold.  These seats are located on the south side of the stadium and are the sections M20-M28.
  • Maryland Sideline and Visitor Sideline are more great options for seating. The Maryland sideline is in front of 24, 25, and 26. The visiting team sideline is in front of 4, 5, and 6. For the general visitor seating sections, tickets are in Sections 2 and 302.
  • Student Seating is open to all UMD students who request a free ticket. Sections 8-16 are designated for Maryland students on gamedays. This area always brings great energy and cheers on the Terps loud and proud!

Some overall recommendations for seats with great views of the field include Sections 205, 206, 207, and 208. The area has great positioning near midfield in addition to the great height from the second seating tier.

You may want to check out some of our other blogs pertaining to football because, frankly, seating is just one part of Game Day. Check out Are You Ready for Some Football or Where to Pre-Game, and of course Game Day Outfits for parents and our students before you head to the game.
