Is That How Your Favorite Fairy Tale Begins?

When getting ready to go to college, you plan your dorm room, pick out classes, figure out a meal plan, etc. One aspect of college that is just as important is self-care! From getting a mani-pedi to getting your hair cut or dyed, there will be times where you need to treat yourself while taking care of yourself. While away at school, it is important to know where to go when your student is in need of a touch-up. Though they may not be regulars at these beauty salons and barbershops, students will need to go from now and then or for special occasions such as Greek formals, banquets, or interviews.

Here are some recommendations for various go-to salons and barbershops in the area. Make sure to bring your UMD ID with you because many of these establishments offer special student discounts.

Hair Salons

If your daughter is getting a haircut, you may want to know that they have the option to sell their hair online. If they are going to get their hair cut anyway, they can sell the locks that are lopped off. High-quality hair can be valued at over $500 and with so many people getting their first post-pandemic haircuts, we’ve got a price calculator.

  • Alchemy Salon-Cut, coloring, styling, conditioning treatments, and extensions

Time To Get Involved!

One of the most exciting parts about going to college is getting involved and finding new passions and hobbies all while having fun. When students first come to UMD, they are often overwhelmed by the huge campus filled with over 30,000 undergraduates. To make a big university feel small, get involved! When most students think of getting involved, Greek life comes to mind, but there are so many other on-campus opportunities to take advantage of.

Of course, class and assignments come first, but getting involved on campus in some way is pretty important as well. Firstly, joining a club helps your students build a community and network. Meeting people will help their transition into college go smoother and these connections and friendships can last forever. Joining clubs and organizations allows students to discover their passions and strengths, and to make connections for future resumes and employment.

One important aspect of joining a club or organization is time management. Students should only take on what they can handle and, while being busy is great and exciting, you do not want to fall behind on work. When getting involved, make sure they understand the time commitment they have to make and then make a decision that benefits them in all areas.

At the University of Maryland, there are more than 800 clubs, fraternities and sororities, and sports that students can possibly take part in. One of the best ways to find about these organizations is through the First Look Fair. The First Look Fair is one of the longest-running involvement traditions at the University of Maryland. The event takes place in early September and is located on McKeldin Mall. At the fair, each organization sets up booths or tents to advertise who they are and what they do. This event is something I recommend all students to attend as it is a great way to get information on various clubs and organizations and possibly sign up for one they are interested in. If you miss this event do not worry, there is a Second Look Fair in the Spring.

So Many Choices

  • Greek life– At UMD there are 16 National Panhellenic Conference sororities and 25 recognized Fraternities within the IFC.
  • Cultural organizations– There are various cultural associations on campus that students can get involved in such as the Asian American Student Union and the Ethiopian-Eritrean Student Association.
  • Religious organizations– There are religious organizations students can join to learn more and find a community within students of the same religion.
  • UMD SGA– Student government is a great way to get involved and put your leadership skills to use. SGA hosts fun events and works to make the university a great place where all students have a great experience.
  • Organizations by major– Many students look to join a club that relates to their major in order to find students that have common interests and goals. The Business School, School of Engineering, School of Public Policy, and other schools have clubs that students can join.
  • Sports and Recreation Clubs– There are around 100 clubs that are dedicated to sports, games, and activities. Club sports and intramural sports teams are fun ways to keep playing your favorite sport while not having too serious of a commitment.

Get Ready For the Big Game With These Attire Tips!

The best feeling for any college student, particularly if you’re a Terp, is waking up knowing it’s gameday. There is so much preparation that goes into game days: where to tailgate, who to squad up with, and most importantly what to wear. Showing up to tailgates and games is more than just rocking red, white, black, and gold; it’s showing your school spirit and how much you love your school. It almost feels like a school-wide competition: who can get the most spirited? With this list, you’ll be sure to place first.

It is important that whenever you are shopping for game day attire, you look strictly for your school colors. You don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb wearing the one color that doesn’t match with anyone else. The best part about UMD’s school colors is that it is the only NCAA school to have four official school colors, so you have plenty of color choices when it comes to game day! As the game day gets closer, UMD will announce what colors students are expected to wear. For example, they may announce that a game will have a “black-out” or a “red and white-out”. This means that you should wear a black or red and white outfit!

When planning an outfit, you can choose to go all out or keep it sweet and simple. If you are on a budget, then definitely stick with the basics: plain colored tank or tube tops and fun t-shirts that rep UMD. Denim is a great move for game days. If it’s the early fall, go for some ripped jean shorts or overalls from American Eagle. If it’s getting closer to winter I suggest either cool mom jeans or some fun joggers from Missguided. Another way to spice up your game day outfit is to accessorize! Fun ways to do so are adding face stickersheadbands, and fun socks to your outfit. Wearing colorful, tinted sunglasses has been really popular, so get a pair that sports your school colors!

T-shirts are an essential game day piece, so make sure yours makes a statement. A fun way to save money and make something unique is by DIY cut up t-shirts. You can turn any plain, boring t-short into something new like a crop top, tank top, halter, and more! The options are endless and always make an outfit. Before you ruin a shirt, make sure you plan out what you’re going to do and look up videos on how to do it yourself.

If you want to leave the game day attire in the hands of professionals, we recommend TailgateTailor. They have the coolest sweatpants, t-shirts, and hoodies that are great for game day. Custom University also has great game day stuff, so make sure you check out their website.

The best way to cheer on your team is to be the cheerleader! Not literally but looking like one helps. Another game day staple is a cheerleading skirt. Cheer skirts go perfect with a cute crop top and is a quick way to be game day ready. If you’re feeling more like a team player than a cheerleader, then we have something for you, too! Wearing your team’s jersey is one of the best ways to show off your love for the team. Girls usually wear an oversized jersey so it even looks like a dress! To top off your look, accessorize with a clear bag from Score Gameday Bags. Use the code HUH15 for a 15% discount. Most stadiums implement a clear bag policy, so why not have a clear bag that still has style?

Perhaps you are more about repping the school’s colors. We love, Show Me Your Mumu’s line of cute and trendy gameday outfits.

When it comes to guys, they have it a little easier when it comes to game day attire. Most guys stick to a game day jersey, t-shirt, or tank that rep UMD. Fanatics has it all! To protect from the sun, guys also love a school baseball cap. Regardless of your style, don’t forget sunscreen and lots of water. Game days are long and hot at the beginning of the season, so be sure you stay safe and hydrated.

When it gets later in the semester and starts getting cold, it’s time to switch over to sweatpants and sweatshirts. Another fun way to keep in spirit while staying warm is tailgate leggings!

Another favorite for gameday attire: By Gabby and Gameday Couture Social House.

There is always so much anticipation when it comes to football season, so enjoy it while it lasts! Deck yourself out in all things that represent you and your university. Show off your colors all day, every day! Your team will thank you!

Sorority, It’s More Than Parties

Personally, joining a sorority was something I always knew I wanted to do. From watching my camp counselors as a kid to seeing my friends a year older rush the year before I had the chance, I was always interested in being a part of Greek life. At the University of Maryland, girls rush the second semester, allowing you to have time to consider if you want to rush and to get settled into college and the new lifestyle that comes with it.

I had a great time first semester and made wonderful friends, but I felt that I didn’t know many people other than my close group of six girls. When the beginning of the second semester came around, I was thrilled to begin the rushing process. After a long but important five days, I was able to find my new home. Going through the recruitment process, you learn that each sorority has different values, rules, activities, events, and standards, and these differences are what make it easy for everyone to find which one truly feels the most like “home”.

Primary recruitment begins the first week of classes of the winter semester. You can register for recruitment in late October and have up until the beginning of the week it begins to sign up. Rush is a full five days and it begins with attending all 16 sororities under UMD Panhellenic Association (PHA). Fall recruitment is considered informal recruitment and only certain sororities choose to participate in this.

One step I would recommend for those considering joining Greek life is to attend open houses in the Fall. Each sorority holds an open house event where all students are welcome to attend and get a feel for what it means to be a member of the chapter and have a look around all the beautiful houses. Upon joining a sorority, there are going to be things each chapter does slightly differently, and some things they do the same. Some common elements between all the sororities are that all of them meet for Chapter once a week, have date functions twice a semester, and have various philanthropy events throughout the year.

Chapter is a formal meeting between members of the sorority and special advisors to discuss important information, hold specific rituals, and give out special announcements and news. There are two date functions a semester: a date function and formal. A date function is the first event and is the more casual of the two. This will be held at one of the local bars or event locations and the girl asks a boy. Formal is one of my favorite nights of the semester. Everyone gets dressed up really nicely and the sorority charters a bus of some sort to head into Washington D.C. to a club that has been rented out for the whole chapter. This event will have a shirt or sweatshirt created for both you and your date to remember the fun night.

Philanthropy events are a time where each sorority raises awareness and funds for their own individual worthy cause. My sorority’s philanthropy was something that drew me into the chapter I joined. All sororities are so passionate about their philanthropy and have come up with so many fun ways to raise money for the cause. Common events include all you can eat food events, auctions, poker nights, and many more creative ways to show support.

Once your daughter joins a sorority and is initiated, their sorority letters can pretty much be found on her at all times. Big/little events will result in tons of clothes, water bottles, bags, accessories, and various other items for them to sport around campus and show off their letters. In addition to her own letters, it is super common for your daughter to rep her favorite fraternities. Should you decide to get them a congratulatory gift, we have some suggestions here from:

Desert Cactus GreekBrit, and BeeAlexandra, and Company  Go Greek ChicCotton SistersSorority ShopSignature Tumblers, Greek Gear, Greek Creations All that Jas BaubleBar, and Gild the Lily. Even Bed, Bath & Beyond carries Greek merchandise including tumblers, pillows, poufs and more!

Yes, being in a sorority seems like all fun and games, but there are many rules, guidelines, and standards that they must meet and maintain to remain a member of the chapter UMD. PHA requires a minimum GPA of 2.5 and at least 12 credits in order to participate in sorority recruitment. In addition to this, each sorority has its own standard of GPA and it must be met each semester you are a member. There are also specific workshops and seminars each sorority and fraternity must including a sexual harassment seminar, a body image workshop, and alcohol and drug seminars. These requirements are in place to promote the safety, well-being, and happiness of everyone both in and out of Greek life.

Joining a sorority was one of the best things I have ever done, it has changed my college experience at UMD, given me my best friends, and given me a real sense of community within a huge college campus.
