HaveUHeard that Microsoft Office 365 technology is free?
No need to clean your glasses! It says exactly what you thought it did: Free technology for all enrolled UF Students! Students also receive 50GB of storage through GatorCloud Email.
And there’s more. As a UF student, you receive technical assistance with connectivity and other authentication issues. You can also receive 60-80% savings in student licenses for special software. That even includes Adobe Create Cloud Suite.
The computer of choice for many college students is currently trending toward Macbooks. But, before you head out to make your computer purchase, be sure your student has checked to see if their college has specific requirements that differ from the general technology recommendations. For some individual college and degree programs, their hardware and software requirements may be better served with a Dell, Microsoft Surface Pro or HP. A Microsoft Surface can be purchased at a very reasonable price, and HP is another favorite. If you want to make a little more of an investment, the Apple Macbook Air and Apple Macbook Pro come very highly recommended, as mentioned above. A lot of students also bring tablets/iPads to class because they are great for note-taking.
A handy app to add to your student’s technology arsenal is Grammarly. Grammarly’s mobile keyboard is the personal editor you can take with you wherever you go. It’s the best plagiarism checker and proofreader, and it helps keep your student’s vocabulary up to speed.
To Print or Not to Print
When your student has printing needs, they can print at various campus locations. Printing charges appear on a student’s financial account, found by accessing their ONE.UF electronic portal. You can find printing prices and policies here, and printing locations here. If your student ends up living off campus at some point, many of the apartment complexes include free printing as an amenity. Although I sent my daughter to UF with a printer, it came home within a few semesters due to lack of need.
Incoming students will receive directions for setting up the UF network. Currently, UF requires students to have UF Eduroam to onboard their wireless devices to connect to Wi-Fi on campus. This portal assists in the configuration of a user’s Gatorlink device to connect to the secure Eduroam campus wireless network at UF. It’s wise to make sure your student also has an Ethernet cable. Especially in the dorms, and to securely facilitate online testing, Ethernet cables (and an adapter, if necessary) are an integral element to ensuring their technology will remain their ally and not an adversary.
Don’t let their Gator pride get lost in an electronic haze, though. All their technology — from their laptops, cell phones, gaming devices to even their amazon echo — can proudly display customized UF stickers.
