So Many Majors…
So much to consider, so little to lose when choosing among majors as a new Gator!
The University of Florida is not just the home of the Gators or the famous Swamp. Our flagship Florida university is now ranked No. 6 among public universities by 2021 U.S. News & World Report. UF first reached the top 10 in 2017, and is on the cusp of reaching its Top 5 goal. What’s more, UF’s Online Undergraduate programs, which have become extremely popular in recent years, are ranked #4 in the country.
UF has acquired a reputation as one of the nation’s Public Ivy institutions. An amalgamation of sixteen different colleges, the University of Florida has more than 150 research, service, and education centers, bureaus, and institutes. They offer more than 100 undergraduate majors and 200 graduate degrees. The most popular majors at the University of Florida include:
- Biological and Biomedical Sciences
- Business
- Communication Sciences
- Engineering
- Journalism
- Management
- Marketing
- Social Sciences
Note: Some of these majors have more than one option available, eg. business/business administration/international business. There are also some majors that can be taken strictly online. While these programs are the most popular, there is so much more to choose from.
How to Choose?
Seeing all these choices only reinforces how daunting it can be to choose a major. But there is also great comfort for your Gator in that happy banquet. In choosing UF, my daughters knew that they could always find a place to follow their academic passion or interest, even if it evolved — or made a U-turn — during their degree pursuit. My elder daughter successfully re-routed her Music Performance major into a minor, then segued into a degree from the College of Human Health and Performance. My younger daughter went at it from the totally opposite direction. (Here comes the familiar “Of course!” chorus…) She plotted her way through the Business school, added a Jazz Minor, and then layered both onto the Master of Science in Entrepreneurship Combined Degree program.
I have found UF to be one of the most forward-thinking universities in understanding and answering the need for flexibility as their students progress and mature. And as a student, it’s great to know you can stay committed to your Orange and Blue relationship without short-circuiting either your progress or freedom.
So it should come as no surprise that UF’s freshman retention rate is over 97%. You can read more about all the choices as well as the options available that are offered online. Give yourself time…it’s a bounty of riches to ponder and plunder!
Majors at the Top of the Swamp Heap
Here are the top-ranked majors at the University of Florida:
- Agricultural Sciences
- Business-Accounting & Finance
- Chemistry
- Communications
- Criminal Justice
- Design
- Education
- Engineering
- Kinesiology and Physical Therapy
- Nursing
Note: Some of these majors also have more than one option available, e.g. Education Pre-K- Grade 3, Education Elementary /Special Education, Educational Sciences (minor). Some majors can be taken strictly online.
It is always recommended that students meet with academic advising. Advisors can tell you more about available options and requirements, and even programs that are unique to UF. For instance, the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering offers an engineering major designed for students who ultimately want to major in engineering, but have not yet chosen a specific area within the discipline. While this isn’t a degree-granting major, it keeps students on track while they continue to decipher the refined area of their degree pursuit.
