They’ve Been Accepted, Woo Hoo a Cane!

Here we go, they are a Cane!

Accepted? So your son or daughter is going to be a Miami Hurricane! Congratulations! It is great to be a ‘Cane for so many reasons. You can now breathe a sigh of relief that a decision has been made. Take a look at our list of what to do next.

First, this may sound silly, but check your admissions letter for accuracy regarding their name, entrance term, address and major. If any changes need to be made, it needs to happen in writing or online at CaneLink (a.k.a your student portal that your student created when they first applied to the University). Note: their Canelink account will be their UM account going forward for housing, class registration, tuition, grades, and meal plan payment until graduation.

Next, you are going to want to turn in that $500 housing deposit and form no later than May 15 for the fall semester. Freshman housing is guaranteed for incoming Fall Freshman. Students admitted for the spring semester can apply for housing (sometime in October) after the $500 enrollment deposit is paid and will be accepted on a space-available basis. Without the deposit, they won’t be able to register for the mandatory orientation, etc. This can also be done through their Canelink account.

At the University of Miami, accepted students will receive an email from office 365 with their school-assigned email address (my daughter received hers in April). Once your student receives their miami.edu email address, all correspondence going forward will be sent to this email address. (Not the parents). Then get that immunizations form completed and sent in. Registration cannot happen without this. You can download the form here. By the way, while you are on the health services page, take note of all the amazing services they offer students.

Be sure to confirm the following:

• Your residency status for tuition purposes.
• That your student has confirmed and done the necessary paperwork for any scholarships awarded.
• Arrange for any final transcripts and scores (AP, IB, AICE, CLEP, and transfer credits) to be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Hopefully, you have already completed the FAFSA form. If you have not done so, do this right away. You can check out our blog on the FAFSA form.
• Check for any holds on your student’s account. It could be the simplest thing, but there is nothing worse than going to register for classes and not being able to because of a simple thing that could have been fixed earlier.
