UM Sorority Recruitment: What to Expect & What to Wear Tips & Tricks
You are going to want to know what to wear for recruitment, University of Miami’s sorority recruitment occurs during the last week of winter break so when planning your December vacation, make sure you check the school calendar if recruitment is on your list of things to do during your college experience.
If you are planning on going through recruitment at UM, we have all the tips and tricks to ensure you are prepped for the week. Though we won’t be with you during the process, you’ll have a recruitment counselor who is referred to as your Rho Gamma. This woman has gone through recruitment from your side so it is sure to have plenty of advice should you need it. Prior to the start of recruitment, you’ll need to attend a meeting on campus where you will be dubbed a Potential New Member.
While a majority of the meeting will teach you about Greek life at UM, you’ll also have time to get acquainted with your Rho Gamma and your group who you will start recruitment with, which is typically coordinated alphabetically. This meeting does last a couple of hours, so plan on bringing snacks/water with you if needed.
Though you will be introduced to recruitment at the pre-meeting, we want to provide you with a rundown beforehand so you have everything you need for the week and there are no surprises on day one.
Day 1- Open House
The first day of recruitment happens two days in a row with the first half of the alphabet one day and the second half the next. The first day you visit all the suites to attend their “parties” and watch every sorority’s recruitment video. Then typically the president or recruitment chair will talk a little bit about the sorority and its values. Then you will spend time talking to a few different members of the sorority. This is your opportunity to get to know what girls in the sorority are like as well as their opportunity to see if you would be a good fit in their sorority.
Open House will be a long day, so make sure you are prepped with our list of essentials as they will certainly come in handy. Once you have visited the six chapters, you will meet with your group, log on to a computer, and “drop” one house that you feel wasn’t a match for you.
What to wear: Nice shorts or skirt paired with a panhellenic provided shirt. Wear comfortable shoes, can be either sneakers or sandals. This is your time to show your style!

Day 2- Philanthropy
When getting ready for day two, one thing you’ll want to bring with you is an open mind. This process is based on mutual decisions. In other words, just as you dropped a house that you felt was not a good fit, the chapters also drop potential new members who may not be a good fit as well. Do not be discouraged, as you will find the house that you are going to make memories for the four years of your undergraduate experience and forever friends!
Once you meet up with your group, your Rho Gamma will provide you with a list of chapters you will be visiting that day based on the mutual decision process. This day we refer to as the Philanthropy Round. At each chapter, you’ll watch a video about an organization the chapter aligns itself with. Chapters have events throughout the year to raise money and awareness for said organization. Following the video, you’ll be speaking to additional members of the chapter. This is another chance to get to know some of the chapter members to see if you can envision yourself in that chapter.
After visiting your chapters, you’ll head back to your group again and drop two additional chapters.
What to wear: Pair a nice shirt with a skirt or grab a romper/jumpsuit with nice sandals or platforms.

Day 3- Invitational/Sisterhood
Like round two, you’ll receive a list from your Rho Gamma on the houses you will visit on this day. This round will be focused on the meaning of sisterhood to each chapter. You’ll speak to additional members of the chapter for a longer amount of time so you can get to know the members and the chapter more as you prepared for the final round of recruitment. At the end of the day, you’ll drop one more chapter.

Day 4- Pref Day
At the beginning of Day 4, you will meet with your Rho Gamma and they will tell you what time to be ready for your parties and which sororities or sorority have invited you back. Each sorority does a different ritual based on their Nationals. When you are invited into the room, you talk to one girl the whole time, and it is usually someone you talked to previously during the week so there isn’t as much small talk as in the days prior. This is where you will decide where you really think you can see yourself the most. The girls will usually talk to you about their experiences going through recruitment and why they ultimately chose their sorority, so it is the most personal day of the process. At the end of Day 4, you will select which final sorority you want to pledge.

Day 5- Bid Day
It’s finally here, the day you’ve been waiting for! You should bring a sweatshirt or oversized shirt with you as you will need to wear it later on, but one thing you do not have to bring with you today is your nerves. Today, you’ll receive your bid card for the chapter you will spend your undergraduate years building a connection with. All groups will meet and receive their bid card, which will have the name of your chapter on it. Once you open with your group, you’ll receive a shirt from the chapter members for you to wear as your first day as a new member! You’ll put your sweatshirt/oversized shirt over the chapter shirt you just put on until you reveal your new chapter to your group members, Rho Gamma, and your new sisters!
What to wear: You’ll receive a shirt once you meet with your group, but again bring an oversized shirt or sweatshirt. You can pair with shorts and sneakers/sandals for the remainder of your day with your chapter. All shirts are different so keep in mind when selecting undergarments.
