UM Relay for Life Supporting the American Cancer Society

Even though things are not ‘normal’ many charities need help now more than ever. UM participates in a an event called Relay for Life. Relay for Life at UM is a carnival-like event with teams selling food and drinks and multiple events. These events include races, dance parties, and raffles. All the money raised is donated to the American Cancer Society to help cancer patients with transportation, care, and research. Closer to the end of the event, there’s a ceremony to honor people who have had cancer. UM’s club has 30 current members, however, anyone can join at any time. There is an e-board made up of seven club members. During the fall, the club meets bi-weekly to discuss goings-on and fundraisers. In the spring semester, the club meets weekly to plan for the official Relay for Life event, typically held in April.

Due to COVID-19, the event was canceled in 2020 but not before close to $20K was raised. The event is presented by the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center is part of the University of Miami Health System and one of two NCI Designated Cancer Centers in Florida and 73 nationwide. Relay for Life is a great and fun way to get involved in a philanthropy organization on campus. Relay is a national organization that high schools and colleges across the country participate in. This charity is a way to be a part of something bigger.
