Those Pluses and Minuses Do Count in Your Grade!
Of course, the grade you get is important! During my freshman year of college, I was elated when I received straight As. That happiness quickly turned to confusion when my GPA was not a 4.0 but a 3.7. Buckle up because the pluses and minuses behind those grades, count in college. Indiana University is moderately selective and expects you to meet its requirements for GPA and SAT/ACT scores for admission into this beautiful place. They have high expectations and strive to uphold a strong academic standard. Keep in mind that if you want to partake in Greek life, most houses require a certain GPA, or else you will not be a member of that chapter. The GPA scale can either work for you or against you. So each one of the pluses and minuses counts!
The Grading system with +/- at IU goes as follows:
- A+ (highest passing grade): 4.0
- A: 4.0
- A-: 3.7
- B+: 3.3
- B: 3.0
- B-: 2.7
- C+: 2.3
- C: 2.0
- C-: 1.7
- D+: 1.3
- D: 1.0
- D- (lowest passing grade): 0.7
- F: 0.0
I believe that it is important to set goals regarding what kind of grade you want to get in every class at the beginning of the semester. Straight A’s might not be the most attainable every semester but when you have a grade in mind, it will be easier to get there. It is also a good idea for students to have several conversations about grades with professors throughout the semester. Every professor typically grades a little bit differently so it is important to know what their thought process is. If your professors know the grade you are longing for, and they see you working hard, they will also most likely help you reach your goal.
If we are being honest here, whether you get an A+ vs an A or a B+ vs a B, it won’t really make or break you, so don’t stress about it too hard. While a huge part of college is about getting good grades, it is also important that you are not driving yourself crazy. Having a good balance between doing school work and stuff that makes you happy such as exercising, going to the park, watching movies, or hanging out with friends is also very important. It is up to each and every student to make sure they find a balance that best works for them. If you don’t end up getting the grade you want, don’t fret!
