Here is what you need to know about living on campus!
You can certainly read about the dorms and just where to live on campus on the IU Housing pages, but we asked our interns for the inside scoop…which is probably what you really want to know before you choose where to live when you become a Hoosier. Here’s what they had to say about the 13 residence halls and 11 apartment complexes: These dorms are located in the Central Neighborhood which is centrally located on campus and great for getting to the most popular buildings:
Central Neighborhood
- Ashton is best known for its single room set up with lots of privacy, surprisingly generous room storage, and easy access to both Union Street Market and Wright food courts.
- Collins is often touted as the “quintessential” residential experience, the building is beautiful with its Gothic-style quad and location near the Indiana Memorial Union and the athletic fields, some students choose to live there all four years, proudly calling themselves “Collinsites” forever.
- Eigenmann, also known as “Eigy” has a computer lab, a Hoosier C-Store, and its own library.
- Hillcrest and Teter offers centrally located apartments that offer a transition to independent living while staying on campus and students in Teter love being close to classes, food, and the Student Recreation Sports Center.
- Union Street Center and Wright Quad with its “enhanced” cost category offer furnished rooms, and Wright Quad which may be old but a student favorite. With its popular food court, location across the street from the library and this may seem unimportant but until you get sick, you can’t appreciate how nice it is to be across the street from the health center. Yes, it is true, there is no air conditioning!!!
NorthEast Neighborhood:
- Banta and Nutt, located on the peaceful side of campus, are another more affordable option, basic, no-frills, community bathrooms, and no air conditioning.
- Campus View, apartment living without leaving campus more for IU families.
- Evermann, a cost-benefit ratio that parents love.
- Redbud Hill, apartments are perfect for families.
- Tulip Tree has big windows and scenic views making it a favorite among apartment residents.
NorthWest Neighborhood:
- Briscoe, a Hoosier fan’s dream location, with its enhanced cost offers central air conditioning, semi-private, and private full baths.
- Foster and McNutt underwent some nice recent updates and will undoubtedly be open to creating their own reputation for the 2020-2021 school year.
SouthEast Neighborhood:
- 3rd & Union, low-cost apartment living
- Forest and Mason, are both conveniently located.
- Read, having a reputation for being quiet while located in the middle of the action.
- Spruce, let us just say, is very nice and quite possibly the most popular.
- University East, apartments steps away from the music school.
- Wells, and Willkie, everything you need right where you want it.
- The Avenue is quite popular and is IU’s answer to on-campus living in a beautiful apartment building located off-campus in downtown Bloomington. Location, location, location.
Work on a new residence hall has started (North Housing Addition). It will be located behind McNutt and Briscoe and is scheduled to open for the 2021-22 academic year.
