Shhhhh, Here Is a Great Study Spot!
You are at UGA and need to study, right? The University of Georgia is such a cool campus because it is in the heart of Athens, and this awesome location provides on and off-campus places for students to study and get work done. Listed below are both indoor and outdoor study spots that UGA students rave about and swear by.
On-Campus: Indoors
- Business Learning Center: This Learning Center is heavily popular for business students because it is located in the heart of Terry and has all the resources for any business class available to it. I would definitely recommend coming here to study for any tests that are for Terry because you will be surrounded by information that can help you and students from your classes.
- Main Library: The main library is awesome for research and quiet studying. It is located on North Campus and if you get a spot next to a window, you get a gorgeous view of North Campus and Downtown Athens. It is only open until 9 pm though, so this is not the place to go for all-nighters. One of the most popular study places in the Main Library is the “Reading Room”, so if you get the option to study there, take it, because it is normally PACKED!
- Miller Learning Center: This is a huge study area for all ages because of the different types of students it caters to. There are study rooms for large group studying, whiteboards and tables for smaller groups, desks for individual studying, and an entire floor devoted to a “quiet zone”. The MLC is open 24 hours, so this is where most students pull their first all-nighter. Some student favorites are the 4th floor and the North Tower.
- Science Learning Center: This is a study space that is specifically targeted towards helping and assisting STEM majors. It has laboratories, classrooms, technology rooms, and group studying rooms that aim to specifically fit the needs of STEM students. It does close at 9 though, so make sure you have a plan to move elsewhere if late-night studying is necessary.
- Science Library: All things science can be located in this library, it is attached to the Boyd Graduate Research Center and is a great place for science students to do research and prepare for tests, assignments, and projects. Like the Business Learning Center, coming here means being surrounded by like-minded people and probably students you have classes with. It is only open until 9 like the Main Library, so this is also not a place for late-night studying.
- Tate Center: Tate can be somewhat noisy closer to the restaurants, but is full of comfy chairs and smaller tables for studying. On the opposite side of the cafeteria, there is a quieter area with couches, booths, and high top tables that are perfect for group projects and a long time studying. Since Tate is at the heart of campus and has the biggest bus stop on campus, it is the best place for studying in between classes. Tate is open until midnight every night and most of the restaurants are open pretty late too, so this is the perfect place for both studying and snacking.
- The basement of Snelling Dining Commons: Snelling Dining Commons is open 24 hours Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday so this is a very good place to eat food and study. The basement is a “quiet zone” and is extremely cozy for comfortable and uninterrupted studying. Most people do not know about the basement, so this is for sure a hidden gem.
On-Campus: Outdoors
- Alan Jaworski Plant Sciences Amphitheatre: This is located behind the Miller Plant Sciences Building… It is a grass terraced amphitheater and is the perfect place to stop, claim a level, and spread out to study.
- Founders Memorial Garden: The Founders Memorial Garden is a beautiful and quiet place to study. There are benches and steps throughout to plop down, enjoy nature, and get work done without being disturbed. It is located on North Campus behind Brooks Hall.
- Myers Quad: This is a quad in between Myers Hall, Rutherford Hall, and Mary Lyndon Hall. It is a great place to lay a blanket down and study in the fall and springtime. You will also be greeted with spike ball players, musicians, and lots of dogs, so it is definitely a good place to be.
- North Campus Quad: This place is perfect for year-round studying, you have the option to be shaded by the huge trees that canopy most of the quad, sit on a bench, or spread out in the sunlight. There are always students studying here in groups and enjoying the Georgia spring and fall weather. It is located on North Campus and stretches from the Arch to the Main Library.
- The Botanical Gardens: Another off-campus location, but in the springtime, this is a gorgeous place to study. There are benches and gazebos that give places to sit and there are millions of them throughout the gardens. There is also a Conservatory, which is an indoor building full of plants that serve as another great study location all year round.
Off-Campus Coffee Spots:
- 1000 Faces: Thousand Faces is a very popular coffee shop to study in downtown Athens. It is a smaller building, but is quiet and has tables set up that is perfect for either single or group study. They also keep simple music playing to provide a very quiet atmosphere.
- Franklin Coffee House:
- HenderShots: HenderShots is a cool, yet dark coffee shop feels with an assortment of antique chairs that provide a comfortable and homey study atmosphere. It is a little bit farther off campus since it is located on Price Avenue, but students at UGA swear by HenderShots and their ability to get stuff done while studying here.
- Iron Works: This hidden gem inside of the Graduate Athens is a great place to study and relax.
- Molly’s Coffee Company: This is one of the newest coffee shops in Athens, equipped with beans from 1000 Faces and amazing workers ready to serve! It is yet another great place to get an intense amount of studying done at.
- Sips: This is an on the beaten path kind of coffee house out in Normal Town, it is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Athens or campus and just study.
- Starbucks Downtown: The best place to study at Starbucks downtown is upstairs! Most people do not know about the quiet nooks they provide above the order station. It is always filled with college students, so make sure you plan to maybe have to wait for a study space. If this location is full, there is also Starbucks at Alps and Starbucks at Epps Bridge that provides good booths and tables to study.
- Walker’s Pub and Coffee Shop: Walker’s is directly next to the Starbucks downtown and seems to have very similar vibes to HenderShots. It has booths and tables, but there is no free WiFi, so you must be able to provide your own if you choose to study here.
- Zombie Coffee and Donuts: Zombie is also located downtown and provides students with a hipster place to study full of yummy snacks and good coffee. They also have long tables perfect for group studying and a bar area that is perfect for alone studying.
