Time to Step Up Your Outfit, Success Is Waiting!

Long before graduation, your student should be attending both career and internship fairs to achieve success. They also need to look professional. For the young men, this may mean a suit and tie and for the young women, while they have more options, it may mean a suit, pantsuit, skirt, and blouse, or dress. That’s not to mention shoes. Students need to research the companies they will be interviewing with and eventually working for. Some companies are very conservative in their dress policies and require business attire while others are more business casual. Trends change, but the basics still require that their look should be polished.

As your student gets closer to graduation, there are many changes that they will have to face.  Although it may not be the most important change, transitioning their wardrobe from yoga clothes, shorts, t-shirts, sweats, and sneakers to dresses, suits, ties, heels, and button-up shirts can be a bit of a challenge. Dressing for success can be daunting in different ways, but the one that stands out most may very well be its cost. Your first impression can make or break your success in an interview.

HaveUHeard that UGA SGA’s Professional Clothing Closet provides free, professional clothing for students? As a UGA student, you will have access to one free, professional outfit per academic year. Reserve your clothing here! Also, the UGA Career Center and JCPenney partner every year to bring students the Dawgs Suit Up Scholarship, which is a $200 gift card given to 300+ students yearly to be spent on both business casual and business professional clothing.

Regardless of where your student is, a sophomore or two months from graduation, they need some business-type clothes. Most department stores will have suit(able) options. You can check Macy’s, Dillard’s, Nordstrom, and Kohls. And of course, do not rule out some of the discount department stores including TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Ross. One store that I always have luck with is Ann Taylor Loft. While Ann Taylor has higher prices, The Loft quality is just as good, plus they often have huge sales.

As they begin to upgrade their wardrobe, they will be happy to know the following stores provide discounts to students.

As they begin to upgrade their success wardrobe, they will be happy to know that student discounts are everywhere for the asking. Students can sign up online and download the app for Student Beans which will give them discounts for food & drink, fashion, tech and mobile, health & beauty, travel, study, and more. Check out our blog Student Discounts- Money Saving Resources. A similar student discount app is Unidays.

Some students also are able to find some great items at thrift stores so do not rule that out. Read Being Thrifty for the top thrift stores in the area.
