Volunteering Turns Your Compassion Into Action

Volunteering with passion is key.

Volunteering truly changes a person. There is so much to gain from helping others and it speaks to your character as well. When you first go off to college, you will find that there is no shortage of different opportunities to get involved with social activities, sports, the arts, and recreation. It can be a little overwhelming trying to figure out where you fit as a Dawg but, have no fear; you will find your place and you will meet amazing people. That being said, please be sure to take advantage of the many volunteering possibilities that the University of Georgia offers.

Giving back to the community is extremely important, and once you get up to Athens, you will realize that it is the community that makes UGA feel like home. Let’s face it, we have all had some form of help along the way in our journey in life so why not give back your time, effort, money, or just your listening ears to those who need a little help? Plus, volunteering looks great when applying to graduate schools, jobs, and internships.

There are tons of opportunities for service through Greek Life, different clubs, the Community Service Programs, the Office of Service-Learning, and the Center for Leadership and Service. Dawg Day of Service is via ServeUGA and is held once a year and allows students to plug in and serve at different locations throughout Athens alongside UGA staff, students, and alumni. This special day lets you get involved in areas that appeal to you and possibly get a jumpstart into a full-time service position. You can also get involved in the CampusKitchen which is a group focused on helping with hunger and food waste.

Another great volunteer position is DawgCamp, this is a leadership role where you advise incoming freshmen over the summer and help them feel comfortable in Athens and at UGA. It is a great way to join hands with UGA and get to know and impact freshmen. There are also tons of organizations and clubs to get involved with at UGA that service-focused. Some of the most popular ones are UGAMiracle, which raises money for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and focuses on serving children and families who have been affected by medical hardships. Also, Extra Special People (ESP) which is an organization creating opportunities, building friendships, and engaging with people who have disabilities. And Food2Kids is another great volunteer opportunity. It is geared at raising awareness, funding, and serving at one of the biggest food banks in Athens to ensure that young children do not go hungry.

Greek Life is another great way to get involved and serve because each sorority and fraternity have claimed their own philanthropy organization and spend all year every year raising money and throwing events to raise awareness for their respective cause. Serving is a great way to get involved and give back to the Athens community, which gives so much to the University of Georgia. It is also a great way to help out people who need it and no matter where you choose to share your time, you are sure to learn so much about yourself.

Give back, share, and serve!
