Better Late Than Never! Transferring Requirements.
Maybe transferring is a good idea. Some students leave for college unsure of what to find only to realize that when they get there, it is not the place for them. Perhaps too they never actually went away but had been living at home for college and are now ready to go away. If transferring to the University of Maryland is something your student is considering, they can start by checking out the requirements.
For students interested in applying as a transfer student to UMD, there are some requirements. High school graduates who have completed at least 12 semester hours or 18 quarterly hours at a regionally accredited college or university should apply as a transfer applicant. Those interested in applying are encouraged to apply by the early action deadline to receive priority consideration for admission to the university and merit-based scholarships. There is no minimum GPA requirement, however, applicants with less than a 3.0 GPA are considered on a space-available basis.
Students will also need to provide their college transcripts from every institution attended. High school transcripts will be required as well if students are applying with less than 30 credits. Students are also required to submit an essay describing why they wish to transfer to the University of Maryland at this time and explain academic challenges and future goals.
When looking to apply as a transfer student, it is important to see how your credits will transfer. Transfer Credit Services facilitate the evaluation of credit for new students who have earned college credit or successfully completed Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), A/AS level examinations, or certain other standard exams. The UMD Transfer Credit Policy has specifications on the minimum grade that will be accepted by the university and how many credits can be accepted. Only courses with a grade of “C” (2.0) or better will transfer, with the exception of “D” (1.0) from Maryland public institutions. No more than 60 community college credits or a combination of 90 from both two and four-year institutions are applicable to a degree at UMD. The final 30 credits taken by UMD students must be earned at the UMD College Park campus in order to earn a diploma.
Upon being accepted to UMD, transfer students will register for an orientation program. Transfer students are required to attend a 1-day New Student Orientation program. This is a great way to meet other incoming transfer students and they will get to meet with an academic advisor. Students can utilize this time to get familiar with the campus, prepare their schedule for the upcoming semester, and ask any questions they may have about their new home at UMD.
