Eating on a Budget

Teach Them Eating on a Budget and the Rest is Easy

Teaching your student to eat on a budget prior to moving away is a great way to give you peace of mind and to instill some adult habits early. While teaching this may be difficult, it is crucial that you, as the parent, know that they will probably eat out way more than you would expect, and so it is smart to make sure your student is at least aware of places that offer a student discount.

Much to my parents’ dismay, I probably eat out 3 times a week… even though I have a meal plan. To justify all of this restaurant-food, I described to my parents how I was using my UGA ID, restaurant apps, and online coupons to get discounts and save me money, so it’s kind of like being on a budget!

Places that offer student discounts/deals:

  • Arby’s: 10% off your meal with student ID
  • Burger King: 10% off your meal with student ID
  • Chipotle: free drink with student ID
  • Chick-fil-a: Gives rewards in the app almost monthly, BOGO shakes during finals, etc
  • Choo Choo Japanese Korean Express: get a free side with every entree with student ID
  • Cici’s Pizza: $3.79 Sunday buffet with student ID
  • Dairy Queen: 10% off with student ID
  • Domino’s: $3.99, one-topping medium pizza every Monday with student ID
  • Eddie’s Calzones: 2 for $10 Tuesdays / $5 calzone of the day every day
  • Firehouse: 10% off with student ID
  • GrindHouse Killer Burgers: 10% off with student ID
  • Inoko: present your student ID for a discount, changes monthly
  • Little Italy Pizza: Everyday $2.25 thin-crust slices and $2.40 thick crust slices
  • McDonald’s: 10% off with student ID

  • Pizza Hut: one-topping slices are $2 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. with student ID
  • Schlotzsky’s: 10%-20% off with student ID
  • Subway: 10% off with student ID
  • Taco Bell: 10% off with student ID
  • Waffle House: 10% off with student ID
  • Willy’s Mexicana Grill: $6 burritos Tuesdays with a student ID
  • Your Pie: On Sunday’s, pizzas are $5 with a student ID

Birthday Discounts are also available at some places in Athens:

  • Baskin Robbins: free ice cream scoop
  • Dunkin Donuts: free drink when you download their app
  • Einstein Bagels: free egg sandwich
  • iHop: a free stack of pancakes
  • Jersey Mike’s: free sub and drink
  • Krispy Kreme: Free donut and drink
  • Olive Garden: free appetizer or dessert
  • Panera: free pastry
  • Pizza Hut: free cinnamon sticks
  • Starbucks: free drink if you have the app
  • Subway: free 6-inch sub and drink

You will not receive any sort of discount if you don’t ask, so we recommend asking everywhere you go – you might get lucky!!  Once they get the hang of budgeting, they will (hopefully) make it a habit.

If you visit your Dawg, don’t plan on seeing any of these places, as they will want you to take them to restaurants they presently can’t afford and a list of these can be found on our Restaurants blog.
