Homecoming at UGA

Homecoming is All About the Game.

Homecoming…no, not the kind where our kids announce they are coming home for the weekend…at UGA is exciting. From the tailgates that lead to the big football game to the big parade filled with floats and bands to the tons and tons of UGA fans that come back to relive their glory days; there is plenty to do and the excitement is contagious.

UGA Homecoming began in 1922 as a meeting full of spirit and bulldog pride, that has now grown into a full week of festivities for students, faculty, and alumni to all enjoy together. In 1936, the UGA homecoming grew even bigger when the Biftad Club made a decorating competition among fraternities, sororities, and dormitories which led to further competitions being added in later years. In 1946 UGA crowned it’s first-ever homecoming King and Queen, a tradition that has never been skipped since.

This year, homecoming week is from November 15th to November 21st and will have events the entire week leading up to the game on the 21st against the Mississippi State Bulldogs such as window painting, a parade, a virtual 5K, a bingo night, a week-long scavenger hunt, homecoming court events, a drive-in movie, and then the royalty crowning at the football game. This week is extremely interactive all over campus and downtown to really boost student’s morale, school spirit, and excitement for the game. Be sure to have your Georgia gear ready. A personal favorite of most UGA students is how inclusive UGA is when it comes to alumni and making them apart of homecoming. The Alumni Association plans events such as tailgates, dinners, and watch parties for alum to come together and reminisce on their time as a student. Cheerleaders of the past are also invited to spend time between the hedges cheering on the dawgs on the sidelines just like they did when they were young. While this tradition is on pause for the 2020 school year due to COVID, expect this amazing tradition to resume once it is deemed to be safe.

Although this year’s homecoming will be different than ones in the past, UGA is so excited to welcome people back in between the hedges for socially distanced football this fall.
