Your Student got in trouble, now what?

Is your student having trouble or in trouble? Are they having problems with a roommate, an apartment lease, underage drinking, academic troubles including plagiarism, parking tickets, and so on? You send your student off to college with the best of intentions. You’ve had the discussion about budgets, walking alone at night, binge drinking, hazing, and drugs. You’ve even discussed being a good roommate and following the University’s code of conduct. But there are situations that do come up no matter how responsible and mature your student.

First off, breathe. Chances are, your student is probably freaking out and is terrified to talk to you. Remain calm and get all of the facts. Remind your child to obtain and keep all paperwork and information. Go over the dates and processes that they have been given. UGA has plenty of resources available through the Student Conduct Office and will aid students in the student conduct process. While they cannot provide legal counsel, they can help your students understand their rights and navigate the investigation and adjudication process.

The University of Georgia is very strict when it comes to underage drinking, and RA’s are tasked with reporting all alcohol found or suspected in dorm rooms. These usually result in a MIP (Minor in Possession) charge or a housing violation charge and are in violation of the Student Code of Conduct. These charges result in parents being contacted and usually, 6-12 month probation and Alcohol/Drug education classes are assigned and mandated by the University. Here is where you can read and review UGA’s alcohol and drug policies.

UGA’s Student Conduct Office, located right in the heart of campus, also handles violations including plagiarism, cheating, university housing code violations, Greek Conduct violations, among others. Each violation is dependent on the University Judiciaries’ discretion and the degree of the violation.

Make sure your student has given you access to HIPPA Authorization and Durable Power of Attorney so you can get the information you need to help your student, should you need to. We provide those forms. It may be difficult to find the bright side of whatever issues your son or daughter may have gotten into, but it will undoubtedly promote growth and maturity.

Chances are, sometime during your student’s life at UGA, they will receive a parking ticket of some sort. These are usually minor and can be appealed through the UGA Transportation and Parking Services. Search your questions regarding paying and appealing UGA parking violations and citations. Sometimes, different organizations will offer ways to get out of parking violations via volunteering, donating, etc, so be on the lookout for those options as well.
